Nintendo Directs are much cheaper and just as if not more effective. Look at the Super Mario Bros Movie. The primary marketing for that movie was Nintendo Directs and its the highest grossing movie of the year by a huge margin.
They are follow vidya’s lead where they abandon E3 and make their own online streaming event and control every aspect of it with little competition the same time
The only thing is it won’t kill SDCC in the slightest because that con has purposes far outside Disney revealing a Marvel movie when E3 was entirely based on Sony and other companies revealing new content

no E3 was dying because they were trying to become SDCC they were trying to make E3 into this event where they reveal movies tv shows and more beyond just gaming. They spent a lot of money on it and lost a lot of money cause no one was interested. That was pre covid, after covid the moronic business execs at companies found out streaming your reveals is a lot cheaper and got more eyes on you then a convention, that was indeed the nail in the coffin but not what actually killed E3
Another problem with conventions is that you are relying on divisive political activism sites and their uneducated writers to show information to the public
This. Websites like The Mary Sue or Comics Alliance would have been screeching into the void without social media enabling people who don't read or spend money on comics to get angry about comics and force changes.
>Comic con will go back to being about comics
I wish >So why do movie conglomerates no longer care about the comic cons?
Covid ruin expo shows tbh none of it matters now and just a waste of money.

i mean SDCC was started by fans with a love for comics and nerd shit, you are right conventions will always have their place, guests, panels, dealer rooms

That isn't why E3 died. E3 died because there was no reason for it anymore. Marketing has changed due to social media and they no longer need one huge news week. Things don't have to overlap now. Also retailers no longer need convincing to order hyped games like they once did. Theres only like 4 major retailers now. They just order from all the big names. In the past they were trying to convince all these small or mid size retailers to order heavy. Those stores are just dead now. No need for it.
E3 died because it was 100% reliant on large companies giving new presentations to a closed set of journalists, and the companies wised up and realized they can just stream it directly to the masses themselves, not have 3rd parties give breaking press on it, and they get to control what and when they release and have it not compete with other major company announcements the same day or week.
Movie studios are realizing the same but it won't kill SDCC but so much of what it is isn't based on those announcements
it was dying before covid and other companies streaming though moron, at the time it was dying there was just the nintendo directs, no one else. not as many people wanted to go it was dying
There are like a million other cons both under CC and derivatives that don't have any of them attend at all. The cons will survive unlike E3 which killed all the fun step by step.
I remember my friend once telling me we should go to comic con to pick up some cosplay chicks. I told him no, because the stench there would be overwhelming but now that I’m 27 and still a KHV, I’m starting to wonder if I made a mistake.
>We should go to comic con to pick up some cosplay chicks.
Since 2017/2018 (#MeToo) that sort of thing will screw with you even with "consent" from the cosplayer chick.
Some dude in my country got jail time because he's too close to the cosplayer chick with her boobs almost poping out and the dummy peeked for too long lmao.
>Over the years I have many times complained about the way fans dress at cons. A civilian walking by the dealers room of a big con will glance in and behold a churning sea of slobs. Those faded t-shirts. Those knee-length shorts. The general sense that soap is not a familiar item. As if the Comic Shop Guy on THE SIMPSONS is a fashion plate to be emulated. In other words, civilians see exactly what they EXPECT to see, and over the years I have sent out pleas to my fellow fans and pros alike that we try to present ourselves in a way that does us some credit. Don't dress like Mormons, but if you're going to a three day con, bring a change of clothes!
People lacking a fashion sense is one thing but why did so many people smell SO bad? Even if you didn't shower every day and wore the same outfit you wouldn't smell THAT BAD but comic cons used to really stink.
For one, it's San Diego in the fricking summer. Then you're inside nuts to butts with tons of people. Also most of the time your hotel is nowhere near walking distance and taking the shuttles is a pain. so you can't get back to your room for an easy refresh.
Hell tons of people camp out overnight just to get in the next day, so it's not uncommon to go 24 hours doing all that with no shower.
>Also most of the time your hotel is nowhere near walking distance
What? Every person I've ever talked to at SDCC was staying literally right across the street in one of the literal dozens of hotels in the Gaslamp. I mean, most of them were either vendors or cosplay thots but still.
And I've been going nearly every year for the last 10 years. Hotels are given out in a lottery and you are extremely lucky to get a hotel that close. Those dozens of hotels can't even hold a tiny percent of the attendees.
A lot of people genuinely don't leave their homes except for once-in-a-blue-moon occasions like conventions, so they typically forget basic hygiene. And then MOST other people are too big of pussies to confront strangers and tell them, "Hey, take a shower," so the shut-ins never realize just how bad they come off as to others.
So much dumb greed every media company wants to have it's own streaming service and own events to completely wall themselves off from every other competitor. Same thing in gaming.
In 2008, right before Iron Man 1 came out I went to NY Comic Con for the first time as a high school senior. It was back when you could just walk in a buy a ticket at the door. I went alone. My friends bailed on me at the last minute and ended up having a bit of a panic attack from the crowds (then undiagnosed anxiety disorder). I remember meeting Steve Niles and getting him to sign some stuff and just being so sweaty. Went to the Venture Bros and Avatar panels. Hung out at Artist's Alley. I went outside to smoke a cigarette on my way out and saw the Seth Green and the Robot Chicken guys smoking nearby and Doc Hammer walked by not long afterwards. I'm a trembling mess. Finally, randomly, my older cousin who got me into comics walked by carrying a stack of old floppies. I hadn't seen him in years. We joked a little and went our separate ways. He died of an overdose not long after that. He was a good dude. That was the last time I went to comic con.
Part of the Financial cost-cutting process.
And making Nintendo direct-like videos is cheaper and easier to control.

Are sites like The Mary Sue the worst thing to happen to nerd culture?
Yes
Nice get. Yes, they're parasites.
>Are sites like The Mary Sue the worst thing to happen to nerd culture?
That website is the worst thing to happen period.
Yes
I would also add social media to that list
This. Websites like The Mary Sue or Comics Alliance would have been screeching into the void without social media enabling people who don't read or spend money on comics to get angry about comics and force changes.

conventions are still a place for b2b networking, without them, companies would become even more insular than they are now

so what are your go to conventions anons?
TFCon Toronto and the Canada Fan Expo in the GTA and in Ottawa the Fannaticon and Geeked Out Events.
>Fan Expo in the GTA
hoping to go here this year
friends said they wanted to do animenorth as well
anime north already happened last month. i'm mostly going to fan expo if only to meet Peter Cullen.
Writers Strike happening plus the actor strike now looming, it's going to be way smaller than it has ben.
WE DID IT NERD BROS
>Looks like San Diego Comic-con will go back to being about comics
woah that sounds like good news were not for the fact modern comics suck big dick
I remember my friend once telling me we should go to comic con to pick up some cosplay chicks. I told him no, because the stench there would be overwhelming but now that I’m 27 and still a KHV, I’m starting to wonder if I made a mistake.
old gay here
Comic Cons don't smell as bad as they used to in the 90s. It had a real fat guy/ cheetos smell before
now people are a little cleaner

DCbros?

so many people in an enclosed, humid space will do that
i dont get the knee hogh shorts comments though. If you attend these places you want to dress as comfortable as possible

An SDCC without there big studios will be just like wondercon
More fan focused i guess
>inb4 the comics industry drops it too, since they have nothing new worth the attention
>So why do movie conglomerates no longer care about the comic cons?
Gee... its like theres a strike going on
Actors will go on Strike towards the end of the month
So does that mean more indie stuff is going to host conferences instead?
nah, indie guys won't have enough money to afford it
lol no, this just means other industries like Toys, Funko (vomit), Video games and Japanese Companies will probably take their spot
Yea
Not gonna happen
So that leaves Warner and Paramount, yes?
>warner
with zaslav’s cheap ass?

I only have one reason to care about SDCC anyway.
Hehe, same here.
Disney has had their own movie preview party for a while now, not Every Nerd Thing needs jamming into SDCC.
That's ok. I'm there for the collectibles and to make a profit scalping exclusive merchandise.
>about comics
But comics suck now.
It started going to shit once adult swim stopped doing their big fest.
Who frickin' needs 'em
I will now go to your convention.
>And no longer about movies.
I wish. I am so sick of every con being not a gathering of fans but just a platform to shill promotional material.
Wondercon was fun last I was there.
Sat in at a writers panel, very informative
So they have nothing going for it then? Good. Let these big ad campaigns die off.
