This is because they married into other houses and ruled through influence, Baratheons are basically an offshoot of targs. Over time their influence over these houses declined but they always had the power of the dragons to keep them in check.

They basically didn't. The dragons didn't just disappear all at once but declined over time towards their extinction. The Targs managed to rule through a mix of tradition and divide and conquer keeping the other houses from ever being able to properly unite against them. A civil war like Robert's rebellion was always inevitable though, it just took one weak link to finally break the chain.

This is projection fantasy history. Rulers with no taxable lands or armies that were solely loyal to their claim quickly get routed by the competition. Post scarcity societies can rule by cultural or spiritual influence but in pre industrial societies grain is king. You mean except for the wife of one of the most powerful men in the land. And Rhaenyra also had a dragon so the window wasn't very large. You also have to consider that Daemon clearly saw himself as the heir to the throne so there was no real reason for him to stir shit up. And after that he tried his best to get on Rhaenyra's good side so he could eventually be her husband.

have taken kings landing, married Daemon to Laena and make everyone kneel. Viserys marrying Alicent was really a gamble and Viserys put a lot of stock into the goodwill of his brother and Corlys to not be mean to him.
