gandalf the white was sent back after death by god with a specific mission in mind (helping men save middle earth), also inheriting the colour that saruman (formely white) had abandoned
gandalf the grey had no divine quota to meet so was free to irl shitpost and smoke weed with hobbits and thats why he was cooler

Gandalf was sent with a mission from the very start. All five wizards were sent off from valinor with the same mission and only gandalf succeeded

I never liked that conclusion, I prefer the one where Tolkien believes they all succeeded in different ways except Saruman. Blue wizards undermine Saurons influence in the East and Radagast safeguards the forests and beasts of Earth against evil

I do prefer the second conclusion as well, but I’m not sure that’s what Tolkien intended. I can’t remember if it’s in Unfinished Tales, Lost Tales, in an appendix or in one of his letters but Tolkien basically says that Gandalf was the only wizard to return to Valinor. Radagast straight up disappeared, and his disappearance is never explained. Tolkien implied that the blue wizards abandoned their tasks and started cults centered around magic. That’s not to say that they didn’t help in the fight against Sauron in one way or another, or that they turned to evil like Saruman, but got sidetracked by other things.

I was under the impression that he was rather undecided about it, in the same way he wasn't entirely certain of the orcs origin. In any case, in one of his manuscripts in the last book of The History of Middle-Earth he writes that the blue wizards came from Valinor in the Second Age, same time as Glorfindel. Which is like a full 2841 years before the rest of the wizards were sent
            >They must have had very great influence on the history of the Second Age and Third Age in weakening and disarraying the forces of East ... who would both in the Second Age and Third Age otherwise have ... outnumbered the West
            God I love these books

He was undecided about a lot of things. Unfortunately he died before he was truly finished, but some things, like where orcs go when they die, he would never have decided on.

I take his writings on the blue wizards to mean that early on they did have a big influence on weakening Sauron’s hold on the Easterlings but that by the time of the events of LOTR they had abandoned their duties.

From Gandalf's point of view he didn't just fall asleep on Redhorn and then wake up in the woods. He spent a lot of time outside the physical realm, and by the time he resurfaced in Fangorn he didn't even remember he went by the name Gandalf. He just changed a little and became more of a hardass.

Gandalf had that mission from the first time he was sent to Middle Earth.

He didn't since there was nothing really to save it from for millenia. Gandalf was shocked to hear Sauron had returned and now an urgent need for his mission to change. His original mission was just to go around to the various leaders and peoples offering guidance and counsel.

Gandalf knew Sauron was never really gone as long as the Ring endured. He was sent specifically to counteract his influence.

Nah, he had forgotten all about the one ring. Took him a ton of time researching to remember about it.

Supposedly, Allatar was comparable in might to Saruman.

Either they got corrupted or they are doing shit off in the East. Most of Tolkien's work take place in a relatively small area of Middle Earth
