      >yeah the motivation for vault technuking the world for profit is some umbrella tier shit
I'm genuinely surprised that more people aren't talking about how similar the Fallout show is to Resident Evil in some of these areas.
      >We're here today not just to talk about the future of this company. We're here to talk about its destiny. We're here to talk about the end of the world. We stand on the brink of Armageddon. Diseases for which we have no cure. Fundamentalist states who call for our destruction. Nuclear powers over which we have no control.
      >And even if we navigate these dangerous waters, we face other, even more inevitable threats. Global warming will melt the polar ice caps within 80 years, flooding 90% of all habitable areas on Earth. Unchecked population growth will overtake food production in less than 50 years, leading to famine and war.
      >This is not conjecture. This is fact. One way or another, our world is coming to an end. Now, the question is, will we end with it?
      >I propose that we end the world, but on our terms. An orchestrated apocalypse.

Also, two years after this movie came out, American Horror Story had a weirdly similar plotline.

I sometimes feel like Paul W.S. Anderson movies are the industry's dirty little secret. A lot of movies subtly or overtly copy his stuff. I was shocked by how much the Halo TV show was copying old Paul Anderson movies from the 90s, and it felt like crazy pills that nobody was acknowledging it. I remember watching Rogue One, and suddenly the ending is literally the ending from Pompeii. I'm watching Wonder Woman 1984, and suddenly the music from the emotional climax of Pompeii starts playing. Clearly, half the industry has seen this dude's movies. Composers, screenwriters, etc.

God when you say the plan again it sounds so fricking insane and convoluted. There is not a single concrete evidence it was the chinese. There are excerpts in the games where the military ASSUMES the planes that dropped the first bombs were chinese, and it's explicitly stated to be an assumption. There was never any "this is how the history objectively goes in-universe" about who dropped the bombs.

          Anonymous

Ah yes, all those planes and submarines were secretly vault-tec which also secretly had an entire nuclear arsenal powerful enough to destroy the US in a first strike. it was DEFINITELY NOT CHINA, no siree.

You only have to drop one bomb, MAD does the rest for you, especially when there had been conventional warfare going on already.

              Anonymous

We have timelines down to the minute for the nuclear exchange. Where did they drop the one bomb? Where did they get the bomb from, the government/enclave? But wait, the first massive strike was from the Chinese, so did Vault-Tec bomb them instead and then MAD took care of the rest? Sounds legit, I'm sure nobody would have noticed that at all, not all the US nuke monitoring systems, the joint chiefs were all in on it, everyone just collectively completely failed to mention any part of this plan in all of their documents, transcripts and records even in their secret bunkers and bases where they were free to conspire all they wanted.
It's a fricking stupid retcon, the only thought Bethesda put into it was "wouldn't it be cool if all the cabidulists sat around a big table scheming cuz they're le ebil?"

Food and resource shortages aswell as a new plague push an American company to come up with a cure. They fail but make FEV instead. Information leaks to the public and the world blames America accusing it of making the plague in the first place. • 2 weeks ago
      Anonymous

This. But even besides this, it's clear that Vault Tech didn't drop the bombs because half the people at that secret meeting didn't have their shit together in time. House didn't have his final upgrades before the bombs dropped, Sinclair's apocalypse-safe Casino wasn't properly finished and ended up killing him and his lady love. Hell, even Vault Tech canonically had some vaults that were not finished in time.

The most likely answer is that they were simply beaten to the punch. Nuclear war was already (seemingly) inevitable, that's kinda why Vault Tech existed in the first place. Their wanting to push the button just gives them more control over something that was already coming ... but China / the US / P.A.M / the Aliens / whatever seemingly beat them to it.

Anyone trying to deny that the chicoms didn't launch nukes is a troll. The world was nearly wiped clean of life. It's undisputed in the games. There was a war going on, so calling out what exactly triggered full nuclear exchange is trivial and pointless.

No, it's strongly hinted the other way around. Vaultec is responsible for the Vault experiments at the behest of Enclave. They were never actually meant for reclamation and the Rebuilding of America.

It takes one nuke that has been to made to look like it came from China, or even hacking into warning systems to make it appear like China had fired their arsenal to trigger the war

Well yeah in old lore it was the chinese communist, while the new lore of FO3/4/76 gives the idea and theory but not litterally explained or told but you can imagine that it was the Vault tec, a lot of theories pointed to that, or the fact that USA shot the first bomb.
My canon that I always belived it was a mix of a lot of stuff.
    >Enclave, vault tec, robco and many more powerful people know that the war will happen it's inevitable too much crisis around the world, Europe is nuked, middle east too, only Eurasia and America are still alive and strong with energy resources.
    >Vault and enclave decide at least to have the Apocalypse at their own term since it's inevitable at least let's put a plant that can last centuries for future america.
What I mean it was like Watchmen or like the saying "too little too late", I mean I have this Idea of Fallout world happened because no one could turn back, the new cold fusion and energy that was invented was too late to be implemented, too late to have peace dealing and too late to ration the energy resources, the war was just inevitable.
But now with the new canon of the Series I don't give too much shit but yeah it's a little strange on the nose that these "capitalist" decided the future of USA and the world is decided only because capitalism.
Again with this new lore I imagine that Vault tec and Enclave are now not affiliated/allies, I mean now I imagine
    >Vault tec was the new plan of USA for Capitalist and private guys
    >Enclave is the survivors of goverment, secret services and military.
    >They knew each other projects and plans but each one had their own plan.
I mean it was like this even in the past but the lore explained "Enclave are the remnants of capitalist, like vault tec, robco, repcoon and the goverment of USA like secret service, military and congress. What I mean is an headscratcher for me.

False! you can only launch Nukes in fallout 76 after doing the Enclave missions for MODUS you need to become General rank & president to launch a Nuke at the Military Silos. Vault-tec Corpos just don't have that authority.

Nta but the long term game is depopulation, which transcends and opposes a profit motive, which is why I'm puzzled when people say there's a profit motive behind it. The endgame is a technocratic world system run by private corporations, combining both capitalist and communist features. Depopulation makes this goal more attainable.

...bro, if you're going to complain about something, then you can at least learn the lore before you complain about it. Per the games, the most likely groups responsible for the nuclear war are either vault-tech or aliens.

This is like complaining about Elder Scrolls lore because all you know is the surface level civil war storyline of Skyrim and think Stormcloaks did nothing wrong, when in reality the elf Nazis are pushing Ulfric as a wedge to weaken the Empire so that they can try to kill all humans again. You need some context and basic literacy, this isn't Super Mario.

The point of Fallout games or tv show is that it doesn't matter who in the end pressed the button, it was going to happen no matter what. Now even in the show it is 100% clear that vault-tec triggered it. Mr House is sitting in that vault tec meeting having calculated that its going to happen a decade or more ago. Which is why the question "How can you guarantee results" is slightly weird in that context but he could just simply probe vault-tecs thinking on this.

Fallout two explains the purpose of the vaults and why vaukt tech did what they did. End of the game you speak with the president of the united states.

    >Dick Richardson.

    >Richardson : We were winning, too. And then those damn Reds launched everything they had. We barely got our birds up.

    >Choosen one : Doesn't seem as though it helped us much.
    >Richardson : Well, no it didn't. But at least it knocked the damn Red menace back into the stone age.
    >Choosen one : And us with it.
    >Richardson : Well, no. No... not quite. You see, we had planned ahead. We were ready.
    >Choosen one : What do you mean?
    >Richardson : We had a number of sanctuaries that would enable the glorious American civilization to endure. These facilities - the vaults - were part of the great plan.
    >Choosen one : Those damn vaults didn't work the way they were supposed to. A lot of people in them died.
    >Richardson : Actually, they worked almost exactly the way they were supposed to. You might call it a social experiment on a grand scale.
    >Choosen one : An experiment?
    >Richardson : The vaults were set up to test humanity. Some had not enough food synthesizers, others had only men in them, yet others were designed to open after only 6 months. They each had a unique set of circumstances designed to test the occupants.
    >Choosen one : What about Vault 13? What was it's purpose?
    >Richardson : Ahh. Vault 13 was a special case. It was supposed to remain closed until the subjects were needed. Vault 13 was, in scientific parlance, a control group.
    >Choosen one : But they would all have died if my ancestor didn't get them a replacement water chip. That doesn't seem to fit in with your plan.
    >Richardson : An unfortunate, and unforeseen, accident. However, as it turns out, a rather fortuitous one.
    >Choosen one : What do you mean?

      Cont:
      >Richardson : As it turns out we needed test subjects from untainted, pre-war, human stock - your ancestors in Vault 13 - and some freshly mutated stock - the villagers from Arroyo.
      >Choosen one : Why?
      >Richardson : For the Project. It's almost ready. Humanity's salvation is almost at hand and the United States of America will be the progenitor of that rebirth.
      >Choosen one : Rebirth? What do you mean?
      >Richardson : The only way for true humans, and democracy, to be safe is to cleanse the mutants from the globe. We humans will take back that which is rightfully ours. The Project will cleanse all the mutants from our fair land - and the rest of the globe.

I never played the Fallout series. Was this a joke in the early games that was taken too seriously? Were caps not supposed to be currency?

          Anonymous

caps were currency in that they were used by water traders to represent an amount of water, I forget the exact number

Then came the NCR with paper money which superseded the cap standard that was used primarily by water caravans from the Hub(Pretty sure it's the Hub)

Caps spread out across the wasteland and are still used in new vegas because they're still backed by water, with NCR bucks having issues with inflation.

By the show given Shady Sands is a hole in the ground and there is no NCR around, they'd obviously ditch the useless paper for the cap standard which has been in constant use for 200 years

          Anonymous

It's currency in the first game because California was pretty much ruled by water merchants. It stops being relevant in FO2 because NCR prints money
Bethesda used it for FO3 anyway despite it taking place 50 years after FO2 and in the east coast instead of California because LOL IT'S FALLOUT IT HAS BOTTLE CAPS AND MUTANTS AND BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL

          Anonymous

Caps can be exchanged for water at the hub, that's their value. Hard to make new ones, and easy to tell when a cap has been made new so it's a relatively stable currency. There's no explanation of why they're used on the east coast though. NCR and Legion have their own currencies of the NCR$ and Legion Denari

it's explained in 76, due to a cross promotion campaign at the time, one of the few safe places for people after the war that wasn't a vault was doing a promotional campaign where goods could be bought with bottle caps, this led to merchants both water and otherwise taking them as well because then they could also buy goods in the area from the largest remaining settlement with production capacity.

as they spread out to the more heavily damaged areas in the aftermath so too did the practice spread out.

Also there were probably merchants who brought it out east in the wake of the brotherhood's expansion, but that's just conjecture

Also the originals just have more terms for money that make the setting seem more alive. Hub bucks, skrip, dollars, caps as a term are not used that much. Originally caps were just issued by the water merchants because there was a small amount of bottles. Fo1 random encounter does have you find a turned over nuka cola truck with 1600 caps in it.

Fallout 2 and NV has multiple types of money. Its simply good world building. Fo3 and 4 just have.. le capppsss

it's explained in the game they have caps because the BoS war killed the NCR's gold reserves and they went full fiat, the Hub then muscled in to reintroduce caps, making them the defacto keepers of the coin purse.

TBF NCR dollars were worthless and Legion coins were only good for shotgun shells. Also there is never like anything on the east coast that has the production levels or the need TO use money. Though IIRC various games in the series lets you use pre war dollars for some stuff

yeah but they're cloisterd to the Bone Yard, don't really leave, and only remake guns from the blueprints that were left behind in the factories they control. The functional monopoly is good sure, but if people are hoarding bullets as currency, they aren't buying them to equip armies, or using them on each other, unless in dire need, which is bad for business when you sell guns and bullets.

I don’t know why they portrayed anyone in the NCR territory as kooky wastelanders. Most people have adapted to the status quo of the the after math of the post apocalypse. The world they inhabit has functioning economies, trade routes, governments etc. most people are employed with full or part time contractors with benefits the average person of today would expect. The show took a "frick it, logistics is whatever is convenient" approach. Autistically trying to geographically place everything is just a waste of time.

Even though they went with the ass backwards moronic direction of Shady Sands being nuked off the planet, the NCR wouldn't just collapse over a few piffy years. Much less regress 200 years into what amounts to a thin threaded raider faction. The NCR is made up of five great states. At this point in the timeline fully functioning cities on par with Shady Sands would not be out of the question. It's ridiculous.

The show never said the NCR collapsed, just Shady Sands. Even the sign insinuates the capitol was moved.

Where’s the debris? Where’s the squalor and filth? Do these people have power? That’s impossible in the post apocalypse

It drives me nuts that Bethesda CLEARLY wants to write stories that take place mere decades after the bombs. But instead they just keep going deeper and deeper into the timeline.

War never changes. The SECOND GAME of the franchise established that humanity can't get away from the fallout of its actions.

The second game establishes the humanity is on the fast track of rebuilding. Even more so than it was in Fallout. And with the enclave getting wiped out things only speed up. I don’t know where this minority cope that the world is permanent lot stagnated 200 years after the bombs fell came from. That idea is inherently silly and doesn’t play in the series. It’s always been about what happens after the apocalypse has come and gone

Show doesn't make the claim that the NCR is dead. Just damaged. San Fran was already larger than Shady Sands at its peak and decades before, so you're right that fully functioning cities on par with Shady Sands isn't out of the question.

I imagine season 2 would show the fully military might of the NCR backed with gun runner munitions and so on

No, the showrunners might be aware of screeching and malding NVgays but they're not going to bring back a faction they've went out of their way to be nuked.

What they'll show are NCR remnants in the Mojave, specifically those who are holed up at Hoover Dam.

As anon said, shady sands is one part of the NCR. Not the sum of it. You got hundreds of thousands of peeps living in comfort all over California. Maybe millions at this point in lore

it's funny to see how terrible writing can make a fandom have a bigger canonical schism than the split between the roman catholic and orthodox catholic church. bravo graham and geneva, bravo bethesda
