Both depict people as being neutral
LOTR just focuses on a group of heroes. But note that most people in that world ignore the conflict. Look how few come to defend Gondor. The war against Mordor ends up being carried by two nations and a small band of heroes. Whole civilizations just sit the war out. Meanwhile plenty of human mercenaries end up on the side of Mordor.
Both series show that people can be good or bad but most are simply trying to survive in a harsh world. It’s just a question of what you want to emphasize for your story.
That and GoT leans more into politics. And realistic depictions of medieval level society, meaning a lot of rape and torture and slavery

No the middle ages were a perfect time with people who were much more friendly than they are today. There was still bad things but much less than today it was always met with swift justice.
