There's nothing to "get". You are presented with a story. This story might be told in an unconventional manner, but at the end of the day, it's just a story. The real problem with people who get "Lynched" is that they are actually looking for some grand puzzle to put together instead if just watching a story unfold. Lynch is admittedly style over substance, but style over substance is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

Except it isn't. This is just dishonest. It's told in a mostly incoherent manner. Unconventional is the story structure of Memento. It's gimmicky and unconventional, but it is ultimately completely coherent. The entire problem is that the majority of Lynch's "stories" don't actually form a coherent narrative. They try to rely on imagery to evoke feelings and fill in for actual plot progression and have the meaning behind the film not be its surface narrative, but the vast majority of time his conveyance is so obtuse and indecipherable that it's no different from completely meaningless random imagery.
The problem with people who get "Lynched" is they are looking for films that have actual coherent stories and meaning in them and Lynch's films don't have that. His idiot fans want it both ways in insisting it's just art to be felt and enjoyed but simultaneously want to pretend like it does have some kind of coherent purpose so they don't have to admit that it's purposeless. I don't get why people treat Lynch like he has to be this benchmark for media literacy or intelligence, his films are enjoyable even if you don't fully understand what's going on in the plot. He's good at making individual moments and characters stand out and evoking an emotion in a scene even if you don't grasp the context of that scene in the wider film. I think people who treat his films like puzzles that must be unraveled who then get upset that they can't unravel it would probably enjoy him more if they just sat back and watched instead of getting upset about not getting the plot. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get the plot too, but I generally find it's something I worry more about on a second viewing, but I still enjoy the first plenty despite not getting it all right away.

There's nothing to "get". You are presented with a story. This story might be told in an unconventional manner, but at the end of the day, it's just a story. The real problem with people who get "Lynched" is that they are actually looking for some grand puzzle to put together instead if just watching a story unfold. Lynch is admittedly style over substance, but style over substance is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

Except it isn't. This is just dishonest. It's told in a mostly incoherent manner. Unconventional is the story structure of Memento. It's gimmicky and unconventional, but it is ultimately completely coherent. The entire problem is that the majority of Lynch's "stories" don't actually form a coherent narrative. They try to rely on imagery to evoke feelings and fill in for actual plot progression and have the meaning behind the film not be its surface narrative, but the vast majority of time his conveyance is so obtuse and indecipherable that it's no different from completely meaningless random imagery.
The problem with people who get "Lynched" is they are looking for films that have actual coherent stories and meaning in them and Lynch's films don't have that. His idiot fans want it both ways in insisting it's just art to be felt and enjoyed but simultaneously want to pretend like it does have some kind of coherent purpose so they don't have to admit that it's purposeless. So they get stuck in this hipster cycle of insisting they get it but don't want to explain it because they can't.

None of his movies are incoherent, you're just used to watching conventional movies. If you don't like art films, that's fine, but there is nothing about his movies that are incoherent. Your idea of "coherent story" is Star Wars or Jaws, where there is a clear villain that needs to be vanquished by the clear protagonist. These are good movies, but they are not the only stories. Not every story has to be presented with a good vs. evil hero's journey. That's just one genre of storytelling.

I don't get why people treat Lynch like he has to be this benchmark for media literacy or intelligence, his films are enjoyable even if you don't fully understand what's going on in the plot. He's good at making individual moments and characters stand out and evoking an emotion in a scene even if you don't grasp the context of that scene in the wider film. I think people who treat his films like puzzles that must be unraveled who then get upset that they can't unravel it would probably enjoy him more if they just sat back and watched instead of getting upset about not getting the plot. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get the plot too, but I generally find it's something I worry more about on a second viewing, but I still enjoy the first plenty despite not getting it all right away.
