I think it's more a recognition that absolute fidelity can lead to a Halloween costume effect. Being a good adaptation sometimes means, you know, adapting. I don't care about ATLA in any capacity and there is such a thing as going too far, but the general point is right.

The costuming was objectively better in every way yes

While the M. Night costume looks fine the problem is that looks like a generic Shaolin costume, there's no way to know it's Avatar

If even half the rumors about Shitflix's adaptation turn out to be true, there will be no choice but to genuinely apologize to Shammallama for his attempt. If its the stuff from before the cast was announced I imagine most of that was tossed out because Aang is a child, Sokka is still the older sibling, and it's not a modern day urban fantasy show about people discovering their secret elemental powers. Not that it means the show will be good but all those early rumors seem to have been squashed at this point. I think with this and One Piece Netflix will be afraid of fricking up another potential big-name franchise adaptation.

It doesn't necessarily have to be live-action. Just any adaptation of one story to another. Manga to anime is a perfect example of good 1:1 adaptations. Or we end up getting garbage like TWD.

Manga to Anime is print medium into motion picture adaptation, same thing as adapting a book into a live action movie. You get a whole new perspective into the story with the music, the voice acting and seeing it move.
Cartoon to Live Action is motion picture to motion picture, there isn't anything new being gained with this unless you go out of your way to do something different.

I know other anons wanna grab pitchforks for you saying that but I agree, now we get to see a story in a "realistic" looking setting played physically by real humans instead of it just being animated or something (animation is cool tho)

Plus there's that small part of us that thinks it's vindicated when a franchise gets a movie, sort of like how the sois on Cinemaphile were really desperate to have a scrimblo bimbo character they like get into smash bros, it's like a shared private victory between them and the product they consoom (I'm no different I admit)

I agree with you as well. We all here love cartoons, no one is saying animated stuff is bad. But just like how they say live action has limitations, so has animation. Both can be good for different reasons.
However the writing can be the same across both mediums, and thus should be the same.

And it's not like we're saying "It SHOULD become a live action at some point", not, what we're saying is if it has to become a live action at some point, which none of us can control whether it will be or not, then it should be done a certain way

    1. Demanding absolute fidelity in a live-action adaption is stupid partly because tons of shit that looks great in animation looks absolutely moronic in live-action.

    2. That said, there are changes for the worse. Ultimately they are bad not because they are different, but because they are worse/bad.

    3. The writing, acting, directing, and so on all matter far more more than either costume fidelity or costumes being good, I will ignore silly costumes as a part of the setting if those things are good.

    4. Shamamanama's shitpile movie was shit all on its own. Even considered on its own not as an adaptation it was totally shit. If anything it was even worse. It was just bad.

    5. Even at their very best, the majority of live-action adaptations are pointless and of course they aren't as good as the original. There are some rare exceptions where something like acting or cinematography is so masterful it does seem worth it though. Or actually does something new and worthwhile, I liked some of the (Japanese) Death Note live-action's changes. Even then, it's always up for debate whether people should bother with it unless the original was actually bad and someone salvages it into something great, the issue is most people do not think A:tLA was bad.

      Anonymous

I don't think live action was needed, but I wouldn't say no to a version that turns it into a single cohesive narrative instead of a single cohesive narrative peppered with filler and plot-adjacent time wasters, especially in the first half of the series.

    >here's what you saw already
Yes that's the entire fricking point of adapting an already successful work into another media. This isn't the 1958 The Blob that was shit and needed something new its Avatar the Last Airbender one of the most popular cartoons of the past 20 years; your interpretation means jack shit follow the fricking script and if you don't think you can add anything as a result then DON'T FRICKING ADAPT IT

Pointless contrarianism, because the Avatar movie butchered every aspect of the culture and flavor of the series and then claimed it was because they were being culturally accurate while having some white kid play a Tibetan monk, more white kids play Inuits, and having Indians play Japanese people, all with the most boring, washed, out, unrealistically bland costumes imaginable, when the actual cultures Avatar was based on had far more brightly colored clothing.

It looks better than brown and beige run through a piss filter. If the costume department and the film crew can't make the costumes look good, then they shouldn't be making this shit in the first place.

you're going off westernized interpretations of eastern cultures and fiction, which OG ATLA is definitely one. a real life Aang would be a regular monk kid wearing drab brown shit robes instead of the elaborate colorful outfit of Netflix Aang.

anon that is a black and white photograph. Buddhist monastic clothing is generally colorful, especially for non-novices, which he was as a recognized master. Tibetans commonly wore deep red and yellow or gold.

funny how the other day I was just thinking how DBS Superflop proves that Gohan is a shit MC who never really rose to the prominence of Goku.
so I can't help thinking how Evolution vindicates anyone of the opinion that a live action DB need a total reworking. the problem starts with DBZ being the most popular and having to deal with the saiyan saga.
    how do you introduce Piccolo?
who's the main character if Goku is dead for the first 2 acts of the movie?
do you just ignore the connections to the previous series like titular dragon balls, the oozaru and the entire supporting cast?
IMO Gohan should be the main character and living up to his father's repution is his arc, but this would mean doing something drastic like having Gohan defeat Vegeta.
for what it's worth I like how Evolution tied Piccolo and Goku's backstories together without fundamentally changing anything. still a saiyan and a namekian.

      Anonymous

Goku wasn't dead dead though. He was doing stuff in the afterlife and gets wished back for the final fight. I could see the Saiyan arc working in a movie format. They should just skip og Dragon Ball. Just do a little intro with a narrator to explain what's going on and what happened in Dragon Ball.

Why are all the characters Asians now?

It’s a fictional world. There is no Asia.

Every time there’s an adaptation based on a fictional european style place it’s diverse and has lots of non whites. But this vaguely Asian style place has a 100% Asian cast? Why is that essential?

It's a humiliation ritual preformed by people who feel guilty being born white.

The characters were ALWAYS asian. The whole world was asian in the source material. In case you were unaware, this wasn't some "fantasy past Earth" thing...it was a fantasy past DIFFERENT WORLD. That was not Earth, but it used asian philosophies to explain things, because it's easier to appropriate than to do the heavy lifting and make it all up yourself and have it make sense..

What is "the setting" if not the elements that comprise the world it takes place in? That should be the only context that matters.

Downside: for a $15m investment they should have just made a few animated movies and most importantly FIXED THE WRITING. the robotic engrish mentions it's going to be a 1:1 with no changes. they should have cut the fluff, condensed it, and refined it down to the heart of the story, which would fix most of the writing issues. but no.
Upside: with all the new fans pouring in, my fic is going to skyrocket in popularity. netfrickups is paying money so I can receive more kudos cummies.

Nah. Also, I think they fricked up going by the character's actual age. Aang was lanky and somewhat tall for his supposed age. These kids are small and stubby. Noah Ringer looked like a damn TODDLER, and this new kid looks 10. Cast call for a LANKY kid, go up to 13-15 if you have to. "A kid martial artist the same age as the character" doesn't work. Real kids that age still look like large toddlers, not lean, slim twigs like Aang did.
