This is a major issue that's impacting even the movie industry. I watched like 3 horror movies last year in theaters and every one had some sappy ending that felt more like someone holding a "NOW CRY" sign

It's not show don't tell. It's "character explains sad scenario and tells you that it's suppose to be really really sad and you know this because the main character starts crying followed by them saying THATS SO SAD"

I remember reading a thing where Japanese people like western media because they're good at conveying feelings and emotions with imagery or expressions as opposed to needing to explain how their feeling or some kind of narrator bubble telling you what to think.
Japanese shows are in dire need of a narrator. They have only two ways of giving exposition and they produce hundreds of anime every year.
One way is showing us the protagonist attending history class and the other is having a monologue broken into parts so that it is recited by two people as a dialogue. Only instead of a dialogue it is written like a moron who knows the answer to his question asking someone else and then interjecting as the other person answers.
Branches from the same tree produce the same fruit.
A lot of Japanese shows have narrators. It's actually a shame that they removed a lot of narration from Baki because that is otherwise a pretty good adaptation.
My favorite one has to be Kaiji narrator because he is so over the top. Good voice acting range too, that guy also voiced Bunji in Gungrave which is the polar opposite in terms of delivery.

It's not so much the CRYING that bothers me as much as it's the blubbering. You can show people cry with dignity.
I have a theory that their environment let them have their way when they cried so they're having their characters cry when they want them to have their way.
Steven’s constant flow of tears got annoying. A plot would develop to a certain point and then when action should be at its highest, Steven would deliver a tearful monologue and then everyone would decide to be friends.
It was kind of subversive at first but got predictable and annoying after awhile.
That only ever happened with Spinel. Throughout the show Steven had to defeat his enemies (like Peridot) to befriend them or not even befriend them at all (Jasper). And there's a moment where he tries talking to Aquamarine to talk about he feelings and she thinks he's moronic so even the show was mocking this approach.
I didn’t even get as far as spinel. He cried to resolve problems A LOT which is partially why I got sick of it and stopped watching.

It's been awhile since I watched it (and I haven't gone back over it), but didn't he deliver a tearful speech to get the other gems to accept the corrupted bug gems?
You wanna know the real trick with this. Follow the character around with subtle shows of sadness. A change in vocal tone, a shift in their eye placement, maybe a a little red vein in the corner of the eye. Show that the character is doing their absolute damnest to NOT cry, that's how you get the waterworks going. Works every time.

What annoys me is that EVERY character seems to cry, or really all express their emotions in the exact same way.
In SU, everyone cried- girls, boys, adult middle aged men, grannies, serious businessmen, teenagers, ancient aliens, basically alien gods and dictators... Fricking everyone expressed themselves the exact same way. They also all blushed or got angry the exact same way. It's not that 'a character cried' it's that 'a character cried, that's our only way to express any feeling whatsoever.'
They also use crying to express compassion which is just bullshit, they think making a kid cry is a sign that he's being all caring and empathic to other people. It's basically a lazy use of bad shorthands.
