is there really anyone who unironically defends this film especially when it so blatantly misses the obvious message of the original?

Yeah, memes and nostalgia (the movie's 11 years old) can make people think the most god-awful movies are actually good.

which is weird because the memes are pretty straightforwardly mocking the movie for the most part

This song wouldn't have saved the whole movie, but it could've saved the Once-ler

      The Once-ler is the movie.
The "How bad can I be?" song that replaced this song completely killed the pacing out the movie. It's pretty obvious from "Biggering" that the Once-ler got corrupted before the song somehow with the notion he needs more stuff and he runs with it. "How bad can I be" abruptly cuts to his corruption near the end of the song itself with the explanation just being he doesn't view himself as bad. In "Biggering" the song gets grungier as he stubbornly justifies his position while he acknowledges what he's doing is evil but justifies it as survival. It fits better with the Dr. Seuss version where the Once-ler absolutely knew he was a bad guy by the point he industrialized, but justified his behavior that if he stopped he'd put countless out of work and destroy potentially millions of people's lives and he created a system beyond himself.
While this one song change wouldn't have saved the movie, the plot to set up this song and the payoff after the song would have helped a lot. They'd have to have the seed of corruption beforehand to get this idea in his head for the song to make sense (but they didn't really bother to fit the replacement song in properly so who's to say) and hopefully have a few scenes after the song with a Once-ler that is fully corrupting and justifying his actions and making arguments it's too far gone to the Lorax (like in the Dr. Seuss version where the Lorax admits it's too far gone to have an effective solution that doesn't destroy the planet or the lives of the people).
The whole dang point is to not let the environmental problem snowball in the first place, the momentum is the problem, which is why "Biggering" makes more sense, it's about the snowballing of the problem of growth for the sake of growth to the point you can't deescalate without the beast becoming threatened "An animal trying to survive". This is the whole reason why in the book and the movie the Lorax draws the line at even one tree being cut.

Ngl, that song actually makes me want to become a wealthy rich monopoly company owner who doesn't care about eco-gays crying about shit that won't even affect me since I'm rich and I can afford to survive while everyone else is dying and I'm watching them die in my comfy office.

I always come back to this song and it's incredible every time, what a dogshit movie.
There are people who unironically, 100%, without irony, think "How Bad can I be" is a better song. Think about that for a moment.

In the original story it showed that his family influenced him and abandoned him to, I don’t know why people get so autistic and assmad over this

because in the original his actions are fully his own it is entirely his choice to continue to escalate and make things increasingly worse until its far too late in the movie it's played off like he's some innocent soul led astray by his much greedier and way more evil family

The movie sucks ass but the old cartoon one is pretty neat.
