I thought a pigtail was one braid, a ponytail was tied up but not braided, and twin tails was a short, internally referential way to say "two tails, pig or pony" that doesn't have a particular cultural affiliation. It's been a few years since I watched an anime, and even more since I watched one where there were a bunch of girls distinguished by how they did their hair and what color they dyed it.
A pigtail is one bread, pigtails implies multiple braids. Twintails isn't a thing, it sounds like something someone whose brain has been damaged by video games would come up with
Aside from your self description, which granted will impair your ability to do the following, notice that you didn't actually disagree with me about a pigtail.
Lila's the type of girl you fantasize about when you're single or while your wife (Helga) is being an angry c**t. Seems amazing in your head at first, but if you were actually with a girl like that, you'd likely be bored out of your mind being around her because she's far too polite.
People always say this, but I’d much rather have a wife that’s more socially gifted than I am (Lila has been shown canonically to be funny and charming in groups or parties) than be with someone with no social grace and who seems to have been raised by wolves. Helga in that specific sense reminds me me of Fredo’s wife in Godfather II. She’d go to a party with you, cuss like a sailor, get smashed out of her mind and start talking shit until you or some bouncer has to remove her to keep her from further embarrassing herself.
In the Patakis she was apparently going to start leading boys on to get what she wanted. She may or may not have been implied to have a crush on Helga too but that might just be my imagination.
>The Romeo and Juliet episode where Helga tells Lila she likes Arnold, and Lila just gives her a sly smile and tells her she has "nothing to worry about" on that front.
Probably just my repressed yurigay distorting it for me but there's more than one way to read it.
He was a dumb 10 year old that had no clue Helga was crushing.
It's an old fan theory that has zero evidence. Just the fact there's no mom in the picture. Also some people will claim she was molested by Olga because they have a tickle fight in one episode. Just morons trying to start shit.

>probably
Totally. She knew Helga was sensitive and didn't want to be mean about it. She really didn't ever like Arnold in that way, is all. Also she didn't want Helga to put her into the hospital.
I mean we know Helga's decent but she's kind of a b***h if you don't know her
In the very first episode Helga spends several hours in the city dump looking for Arnolds hat. She is not "decent". But naturally, Arnold can fix her.
I’m not a huge fan of this JK-Rowling-style revisionist history where creators can gloss over important aspects of a character, then just scribble in some half-assed backstory in the production notes and pat themselves on the back for doing so, as though it deserves the same accolades as having had the balls to include it in the main work in the first place.
Lila was molested? Great, make that the focus of a Very Special Episode to teach kids about recognizing the signs, or how even someone who looks perfect on the outside might be struggling with inner demons. Or include something, ANYTHING, that would possibly lead viewers to come to the conclusion that she was molested without having read it in your bullshit series bible. If you can’t do that, then it’s clearly not an important part of the character’s backstory and doesn’t need to be mentioned at all.
Frankly, while I loved Lila as a character, she was criminally underutilized, to the point where she was seen first and foremost as a narrative tool for Helga to struggle against for either Arnold’s or Olga’s affection. There’s not much more to her character because she was never properly developed or fleshed out. If she had been, there might have been some justification for including her in the second film, since her romantic arc with Arnold had long since played itself out by that point. But because she had never been utilized in any other capacity than as Helga’s rival, the creators made the decision to shelve her because she’d just get in he way of the OTP that had been planned since day 1 of the series. I just think that’s bullshit, and I would have loved to see Lila get more focus, just to make her more interesting and flesh out the world more.

I have never seen that about Lila and I can not find anything about it beyond shitty fanfictions. Simmons was absolute gay though. It isn't even revisionist in nature the Thanksgiving episode is about as subtle as a sack of bricks. I remember picking up on it even as a kid.
I remember there was a video interview with Bartlett mentioning same lady named Lana was meant to be thirsty for Arnold, but now it seems to have been considered urban legend or unsourced.
I've been seeing this gif posted all over the fricking place lately, same dimensions and filesize but different names. Did this take off on some other site? I know you fricks aren't just saving this shit natively anymore.

The only reason Arnold didn't "know her" was because he refused to know her. He goes out of his way to help random people but doesn't give Helga the time of day. The suffering he goes through from Helga's bullying is entirely his fault. He has the power to sweep her off her feet and give her the love she craves and deserves, but he denies her this comfort. The Jungle Movie was nice but it honestly came too late.
Arnold was down bad and probly sniffed her chair after classes but didn't know that since she had nothing but beans to eat at home that she was blasting fat shit clouds all over the chair and when he smellet it he puked all over his balls and did a little dance

>when Helga was right there practically begging for his dick?
1. he didnt know, he thought she hates him beause he was always a c**t with him
2. helga is ugly
>she is suspposed to be ugly
She has a predominant feature that detracts from her overall beauty. That doesn't make her instantly ugly, now your mother, she uggo.
>Very traditional "good-girl" >Red hair >Fair skin >Freckles >Probably looking forward to being a housewife and mother

>when Helga was right there practically begging for his dick?
1. he didnt know, he thought she hates him beause he was always a c**t with him
2. helga is ugly
Lila was a sweet and nice girl. Helga was abrasive and a bully. I can see why Arnold, a nice boy, would like a nice girl. We know Helga is nice but Arnold doesn't know that.
>Anon, do you like girls who bully you?
Are you really asking that? Shows like this make people think that the girls that bullied them actually liked them.
Helga was a cretin. You could argue she had strong emotions and was good with language, but a majority of that natural talent was only ever expressed in journals or poetry or shrines she kept to herself, and in every other circumstance it was used solely to be a c**t to her peers. She's also something of an author's pet where we're supposed to find her antisocial tendencies incredibly endearing (or maybe just relate to them somehow), which really doesn't make the idea of her being Arnold's ball and chain any more appealing. Then if you somehow ignore all of that you're really just digressing into this realm of pity, where we start hearing unhealthy shit like "but she really really wants him!" and "well who else would he end up with if not here?" which is an unhealthy way for any relationship to blossom, real or fictional.
Lila just didn't like Arnold in a romantic way, which is fine and where that plot thread ends no matter what, but Helga is a domestically-abused basketcase who would probably shoot Arnold and then herself the moment her favorite political candidate lost a presidential election or something. She's more unhinged than Curly. She has absolutely no idea how to cohabitate with people unless it involves constant frivolous insults and threats of bodily harm.
If Arnold really had to pick one of these girls to spend the rest of his life with (I guess he never meets any other people, ever) he would be better off hooking up with Kimberly once she's a little older or Maria the 6th grader, with Helga ranking absolutely dead last.
Lila DID like Arnold romantically, but him breaking up with her mind fricked her in a way where she just couldn't imagine being with him anymore. Maybe that's bad contrived writing to force a conflict, or maybe she's just very emotionally vulnerable (or maybe both).
Do you not remember the episode? I'll summarise it from memory. >Helga annoyed that Lila is a perfect girl that is friendly with Arnold so she's seething about her >Ends up writing "Arnold Loves Helga" on a wall in one of her overly emotional romantic ramblings >Hears some girls from her class about to come around the corner, doesn't have time to erase the whole thing so quickly erases her name and instinctually writes Lila's instead >Lila sees "Arnold loves Lila" written on the wall and she takes this to be true >Lila starts acting romantic with Arnold, assuming that he likes her back >Arnold is a bit weirded out by this, Helga is naturally very upset >Eventually after getting tired of being Lila's boyfriend, Arnold tells her that he doesn't like her back and he was just being polite back >Lila feels dejected >Short while afterwards, Arnold realises that Lila was literally the perfect girl and why the frick would you ever break up with her if she literally was throwing herself in your arms >Arnold tries to reconnect with Lila and apologise for breaking up with her >Lila was so put off by the breakup that she doesn't like Arnold romantically anymore but is happy to still be friends >Cue Arnold's annoying one sided Lila love quest for the majority of the rest of the series
I've watched this episode so many times for the LilaxArnold ship moments. Same with the Cheese Festival. This blessed ship is the best part of the show.
>Lila was so put off by the breakup that she doesn't like Arnold romantically anymore but is happy to still be friends.
This isn’t. She tells Arnold that the only reason she “like-liked” him was because she thought he “like-liked” her back. After she learned that this was not the case (however ironic it might be that it has now BECOME the case), she put more thought into Arnold as a partner and determined that she only liked him as a friend.
IMO they still have chemistry and she just felt lied to/hurt and thought that anyone who would EVER reject her and play her like that probably wasn't a good enough guy at heart for her.
I think later throughout the series they start picking up good romantic vibes from each other again, and if the show continued logically they'd probably explore dating officially again.
I mean, they *did* go on a date again in "Love and Cheese", but Helga fricked it up because she's an abusive stalking psycho who I aggressively dislike

Maybe, and I certainly don’t blame her, though I also wish she’d had a change of heart. I think a more developed Lila (writing-wise, that is) and Arnold might’ve worked quite well together, and I also enjoyed the little bit of that relationship that we did get to see. Apart from Helga attempting to murder Lila at least twice and getting away with it because she’s some lovesick tormented intellectual who would TOTALLY be a more stable candidate for a relationship, honest injun.
Still, things don’t always work out and I get that. Which is why I wish they gave her character more to “do” in the story. Running with the debunked molestation thing, maybe she could have struggled with getting close to others emotionally because of that, certainly she would physically, as well. She might flinch if you tap her on the shoulder or avoid using the locker rooms in gym class. Something to give her a character that needs to struggle to overcome a challenge. That’s how I felt when I first saw “Ms. Perfect” as a kid. I was rooting for her because I identified with her struggle and wanted her to come out on top. The problem is, it never really was HER struggle to begin with, and she had no agency to solve her family’s poverty, so the victory she gets when her dad gets a job is kind of hollow from that POV. Like I said, I wish we got more.

The fact she gets ugly-bastard'd by having her be written to fall in love with Arnold's moronic cousin is both pretty funny and also pretty shitty for her character. It's clear it wasn't done with her character in mind and was just done as a joke at Arnold's expense.

Yeah she was done dirty.
So many times I've rooted for an alt ship than the creator's favorite and the HEAVYhandedness in which the creator warps characters' personalities to force X and Y to *not* go well together is insane. Meanwhile they make their intended ship more and more toxic (to prolong them getting together) so it's not even likable anymore. Just two people that are supposedly "soulmates" being shitty towards each other (or in this case, just Helga being the shitty one) while the accidentally-better candidate is sidelined for no logical reason.

And you get a shit-ton of hate from the OTP crew for having a different preference. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had some Arnold/Helga explain to me how that’s the canon ship that the creator intended. Like, no shit, dude. The problem isn’t that I somehow missed the avalanche of “subtext” that makes it clear this is the direction the story is taking, it’s that I still don’t enjoy it because it feels unsatisfying from a narrative perspective.

What would redeem the Helga x Arnold pairing at this point?
I can't remember why in the Jungle Movie, Arnold suddenly decided to kiss Helga. Ah, *pupils unnaturally dilate* because he realized that she was doing so much for him.
But the thing is that this is still Arnold going the distance. And idk. From a blunt perspective, Helga just AINT IT and they aren't cute together. Arnold just is signing himself on to be an abuse victim with Helga, always having to play scared and repair-man. Lila OTOH just naturally clicks. It's just like I'm witnessing him make a mistake, not sure what he gets out of the relationship unless he's a masochist.

Call me easy or a closedted Helgarnold fan but frankly I don't think it would take much but it would be more than what happened. Arnold is the chillest guy on kids TV and lives and breathes leading people through their (largely) personality problems. I think Arnold would very easily get over Helga being a little shit to him. So long as she clearly put in the effort... say 4 to 7 episodes of the two of them getting along before a declaration from Helga or reciprocation from Arnold.
Saying that Helga is cretin is same as saying that Arnold is naive douche or Lila shallow missy. Even if we are talking about her talents she is jack of all trades and master of one. It is constantly reappering notion in cartoon that if she sets her mind to do something outside of intimate realtions stuff than she could at least decently do it and often excel at it. But that just just talking abot her purely from practical angle.
If we are talking about what sells her to me and I guess many other - than it is not pity, that her will to fight against all odds for her dream, even if half of this odds is her own nature and deficiencies. Maybe often not most efficient way - otherwise she would be just plain MarySue - but still finding one despite anything. Victory at any cost could be really enticing thing.
And as for why Arnold - cause Helga wants him, needs him. I care about him only as much as Helga needs him. Though that is still too much for any "sane" person - after all what is Helga if not one of facets of absolute devotion. Arnold is really "a lighthouse to which she steers her ship in darkest hours". If you watched cartoon then one of the things that jumps to you is Helgas contrarism, which is partly born out of her desire to have conflict as a safe form of social interaction, but only partly. Another side of it is her much more mature and cynical worldview as her other peers, no wonder - with conditions in which she was raised up. Sure, it was not Sid's bad hood, but she is no Sid to be able always seek escape in fantasies and fairytales, being more clever and perceptive than he ever was. And it is no wonder that without ability to actually escape this world she immediately jumped to next best thing - Arnold, who was a symbol of another better world, not that cold, uncaring and indifferent place she lived most of her life, the world, her emotional and frankly child side so desperately craved, being constantly corroded by the poison of cynicism.
Remember in Summer Love when he was telling Summer that all the girls at his school were mean and unpleasant (probably alluding to Helga most of all.)
Lila is probably the nicest girl in the class (although Sheena's pretty nice and Nadine is too despite her proximity to Rhonda.) So that's probably what attracted him to her.
Of course, there's also the fact that he thought Lila like liked him, which made his switch flip.
Helga kinda lives rent free in Arnold's head, in a way. Her bullying of him clearly was in his mind when he was thinking of other girls in his class in your example, but not only that in the valentine's episode when Helga in disguise asks Arnold if there are any girls he likes in his class, his first thought is literally of Helga, but saying that she bugs him. Didn't bring up any of the other girls who could at least be nicer, chose to bring up the one who treated him the worst despite that he was specifically asked for girls he likes. Kinda weird. It should be noted this was pre-Lila, back when Ruth was Arnold's main crush.
Imagine being cucked by your own doppelganger. It is intresting what would be first, Helga comitting suicide or Hildas head completely accidentaly meeting dense objest at sufficient velocity.
>Arnold is Charlie Brown >Lila is the red headed girl, the one who doesn't return his affection >Helga is Peppermint Pattie, the tomboy who secretly crushes on him >Phoebe is Marcie, the level headed bookish one... though she doesn't share a crush on Arnold, so the similarities fall apart there.
I can’t say I buy into this comparison, but wouldn’t Helga’s personality be closer to Lucy in every aspect except that she has a crush on Arnold? Peppermint Patty was much friendlier with Charlie Brown from what I remember.
Older siblings love going on about how they are so adult, yet Olga was totally oblivious to her parents neglecting her "baby sister".
Olga enjoyed being in the lights, even when it came at the cost of her own sibling.
>why didn't she go for the chick that treated him like shit, had an butthole father who more than once tried to ruin things he cared about for profit ,and has an alcoholic mother?
>red hair

>freckles
>traditional clothes
Total mystery to me, man. Was there something wrong with her personality?
>a sociopathic waifu who'll do anything to protect you
vs
>haha I hate you lolz but I love you and everyone scares me lol
also this
Wasn't she abused at home?
No but in her debut her and her dad are living hand to mouth and her dad couldn't get a job.
>traditional
>twin tails
Normal, adequately socialized people that don't jerk off to Chinese rape cartoons call them pigtails
I thought a pigtail was one braid, a ponytail was tied up but not braided, and twin tails was a short, internally referential way to say "two tails, pig or pony" that doesn't have a particular cultural affiliation. Simmons was pretty much confirmed gay though.
Don't know about the Lila stuff.
Simmons was obviously gay to me as a child without any direct explanation needed
And Lila having a dark past makes sense. I mean her household is also poor so. And she seems to be a total pushover/doormat type so it tracks
Lila best girl btw
This but with Lila on the left and Arnold on the right
yeah i was abused... a lot about lila is relatable

Lila was a sweet and nice girl. Helga was abrasive and a bully. I can see why Arnold, a nice boy, would like a nice girl. We know Helga is nice but Arnold doesn't know that.
Helga would be a lot more interesting in bed than this chick who screams "missionary only with the lights off no funny business pl0x."
why shame people for not being into kinks? Not everyone wants every sex session to be a bdsm dungeon with ropes and foot fetish.
no i'm not asking Craig Bartlett on Twitter if she was molested. frick you for even suggesting that.
>no i'm not asking Craig Bartlett on Twitter if she was molested. frick you for even suggesting that.
projecting much???
Coming through the real end game for Helga.
Rhonda best girl
Handlebars.
Helga was a bully b***h who made fun of him in every aspect of his life, why the hell would he be interested in being with someone like that?
And Lila might have been "basic" but at least she wasn't a bully who insulted him in every sentence they exchanged.
Anon, do you like girls who bully you?
>Anon, do you like girls who bully you?
Are you really asking that? Shows like this make people think that the girls that bullied them actually liked them.
>Anon, do you like girls who bully you?
why do you think that shit of nagatoro is that popular with incels?
She was actually nice
>Lila DID like Arnold romantically
???
Do you not remember the episode? I'll summarise it from memory.
>Helga annoyed that Lila is a perfect girl that is friendly with Arnold so she's seething about her
>Ends up writing "Arnold Loves Helga" on a wall in one of her overly emotional romantic ramblings
>Hears some girls from her class about to come around the corner, doesn't have time to erase the whole thing so quickly erases her name and instinctually writes Lila's instead
>Lila sees "Arnold loves Lila" written on the wall and she takes this to be true
>Lila starts acting romantic with Arnold, assuming that he likes her back
>Arnold is a bit weirded out by this, Helga is naturally very upset
>Eventually after getting tired of being Lila's boyfriend, Arnold tells her that he doesn't like her back and he was just being polite back
>Lila feels dejected
>Short while afterwards, Arnold realises that Lila was literally the perfect girl and why the frick would you ever break up with her if she literally was throwing herself in your arms
>Arnold tries to reconnect with Lila and apologise for breaking up with her
>Lila was so put off by the breakup that she doesn't like Arnold romantically anymore but is happy to still be friends
>Cue Arnold's annoying one sided Lila love quest for the majority of the rest of the series
I've watched this episode so many times for the LilaxArnold ship moments. Same with the Cheese Festival. This blessed ship is the best part of the show.
That’s nearly right, but
>Lila was so put off by the breakup that she doesn't like Arnold romantically anymore but is happy to still be friends.
I would kill for The Patakis to be greenlit and explore a post-Jungle Movie timeline
nah most of the ideas in The Patakis series bible would have been awful and overly disconnected from the original show
Just read about it and it seems like a bad edgy approach, you know they would have made an "Olga admits to being a high class callgirl" episode.
She wouldn't even be a high class callgirl. She'd be a cheap porn actress. The joke being a high achieving teenager ends up blacked on the internet.
what do we think of Hilda?
She likes Arnie so that makes her a fricking weirdo.
If she actually liked Arnold back then Helga would instantly die
Imagine being cucked by your own doppelganger. It is intresting what would be first, Helga comitting suicide or Hildas head completely accidentaly meeting dense objest at sufficient velocity.
>Arnold is Charlie Brown
>Lila is the red headed girl, the one who doesn't return his affection
>Helga is Peppermint Pattie, the tomboy who secretly crushes on him
>Phoebe is Marcie, the level headed bookish one... though she doesn't share a crush on Arnold, so the similarities fall apart there.
I can’t say I buy into this comparison, but wouldn’t Helga’s personality be closer to Lucy in every aspect except that she has a crush on Arnold? Peppermint Patty was much friendlier with Charlie Brown from what I remember.
Helga is just Lucy and Pattie mashed into one.
Tsudere tomboy.
how it should be
>How Arnold didn't notice Helga
Very cursed
That's some mustache on old Arnoldo and he's wearing a pink bow instead of his blue hat. Also a pink shirt like all manly men. What am absolute unit.
I can save her.
She's doing porn
Episode about Olga saying she got an acting gig where she has to pretend to be a lost woman who gets picked up by these nice guys in a van.
Not early thousands or 90s enough, it'd be her kneeling in front of a couch and a dude comes without pants, half-mast and she's told to help him.
I say it's fine.
Producer talks about trends; Olga wins up talking Miriam into being in a bunch of films with her.
It seems to me someone writing Hey Arnold had some major issues with their older sister. Like why did they love tearing down Olga?
Older siblings love going on about how they are so adult, yet Olga was totally oblivious to her parents neglecting her "baby sister".
Olga enjoyed being in the lights, even when it came at the cost of her own sibling.
Can you blame Olga?
If it's a question of shitting on your sibling or shitting on you, what's a child going to choose?
Especially a damaged child?
She wasn't oblivious she was jealous
The whole series pitch feels like wish fulfillment fanfic by Helga. Especially with Bob's situation relative to Miriam and Olga's.
tradcath broodmare
>why didn't she go for the chick that treated him like shit, had an butthole father who more than once tried to ruin things he cared about for profit ,and has an alcoholic mother?
Well one thing for sure, never eat raspberries.
Helga would have swallowed.
Phoebe became hot in the jungle movie.
Everyone was hot, they were in the muggy ass Jungle.
Carlos…
But anyway, I swear Phoebe's hips were made wider for the jungle movie.
She had grown a bit ....
I like the idea of her getting thicc.
Really wish she wore a grass skirt like those native kids.
Wasn't Phoebe intended to get blacked and turned into a teen mom?
Of all the pairings in Hey Arnold, Phoebe/Gerald is the only one to make me angry.
How dare they.
Blacked? yes. Tean mom? No, that's just a baseless fan rumour
>Tean
Frick, I'm moronic
I love lulu
Gotta get my old tuxedo pressed
Gotta sew a button on my vest
Cuz tonight I gotta look my best
Lulu’s back in town
Gotta get a half a buck somewhere
Gotta shine my shoes and slick my hair
Gotta find myself a boutonnière

That's a nice pic, who made it
Teev
