Mariko Tamaki received such acclaim for her other smi-autobiographial comics
What went wrong, bros?
She wrote many semiautographical works about her experience as an overweight, queer, mixed race asian teen who couldn't live up to her mother and felt alienated.

Her other books on the topic were so well received, but when she did the same thing for DC, using the metaphor of being half alien, it was hated all over the internet.

Were DC fans not ready for the emotional YA-style storytelling? Did they have trouble relating to the title character?

Don't care. Her character is only made for humiliation porn and that alone.

    >Mariko Tamaki received such acclaim for her other smi-autobiographial comics
There the frick you go. She wasn't writing another whatever YA novel, she was self-inserting into a franchise that people---and this is important---like.

Yeah but many children and cutrent adults grew up with animated versions of the Teen Titans

      >She wasn't writing another whatever YA novel,
But she was. As garbage as it was I do not fricking understand how so many morons get up in arms about these DC young adult books for being young adult books featuring DC characters. That's what DC is doing. They're books targeted to teen girls featuring things teen girls want to read about. Like outside of the Tai Green Lantern books and maybe a few others they're all just YA trash with a DC spin.

If you're trying to engage with this topic in good faith, what's the merit to co-opting an established fictional character with their own stories and lore in order to try to tell yours? At best this iteration comes off as using the association to push your own content hoping the established character's popularity will carry it. Pop culture media has held endless vitriol against that way before Mariko Tamaki, it shouldn't be any surprise that when she did it, it was not well received. Just using starfire as a racial allegory is the writing equivalent of cultural appropriation.

Genuinely if the whole thing was original characters then it would have been received better. Or if it actually paid respect to the characters being used to actually further their stories, which is an entirely reasonable ask from any half decent writer.

Its actually the opposite. DC wanted the YA audience so co-opted Mariko Tamaki's writing to appeal to YA audience interested in stories about queer alienated teens.

Didn't care about this when it came out and I still don't care
it's a kids book. You should be caring about something that actually has a lasting impact on people more than a fictional gothic pig claiming to be the fictional daughter of two fictional characters

Why do mixed race people always desperately want to cling to the minority side instead of the good side?

You usually tell stories that involve conflict or problems of some kind. Not much happens in a story where you say "The restaurant owners know I'm white so they don't bother me"

All of her autobiographical books are about her getting groomed and raped by lgbtq+ adult females when she was underage. If critics were too harsh on books like that, they'd be labeled heartless homophobes. Without mariko using her trauma as a shield, critics are free to criticize her bad writing freely.

I thought being fat was frowned upon in Japanese culture (except for sumo).

Its frowned upon everywhere, anon. No one likes fat pig women. Jolly or smart men can get away with it.

Nothing, the book sold decently for that line's standards, and Cinemaphile seethed... and bought it. Possibly for the lulz, but a sale is a sale.
