Man, someone at Marvel's getting desperate to push this

They're probably going "look, our highest sales were in this era" or some shit (when it's really like No Ways to Die and the Obama issue while sales kept dropping). Slott's run is terrible but consistently had higher sales than BND so I could believe them calling the Slott era "celebrated" more than BND

Synergy for Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4, which is going into production soon. It's apparently going to have elements of Brand New Day.

Modern Spider-man has been so shit, BND being the best it has to offer isn't that far fetched, and closer to say it's the least awful of what has been offered the past 20 or so years, which isn't too far from the truth.

How depressing is that. It really runs me up the wall when I see places like reddit to argue how modern omnibuses aren't only not hot garbage but totally worth it. Seriously if it's not them praising a crap Bendis book, it's unopened Spider-Gwen omnis or morons asking for Krakoa, which not spidey but seriously.

I mean, you can believe both that BND is shite and also that, by default, it still happens to be the best Amazing Spider-Man has been in the past twenty years. They're not mutually exclusive, and the latter isn't exactly some ringing endorsement.

It didn't end on a wet fart, but it just wasn't really interesting.
It's a shame, because I quite liked Gaiman and Buckingham's original Golden Age miniseries and the world it presented. But Silver Age was just a dull follow-up. It might get something out of it if you're a big fan of Miracleman just because its more of the characters and setting, in the same way a big fan of Watchmen might get something out of Before Watchmen, but otherwise I feel like it's just a bit of nothing. Maybe it'll look better in retrospect, once they get around to doing the rest of the story in the Bronze Age/Dark Age/whatever they're called minis.

Sort of. Young Miracleman rejected Miracleman and his shitty utopia and pedophilia urged on by Miraclewoman on live TV and announced he was going to openly undermine the shallow and perverted utopia MM/MW created and urged others to join him in Australia to non-violently protest MM/MW.

The mini ended with YMM sitting under a tree like Buddah in Australia as hundreds come to sit along side him in silent protest of MM/MW as MW pouted and screeched for MM to kill him or force him back into Garganza's dream machine against his will. MM tells her in a dispassionate tone he's going to wait to see what he does next and MW, unable to get MM to kill YMM, b***hily agrees to do nothing and basically cede Australia (which she claims doesn't count/matter) to YMM and basically tell MM that it doesn't matter what YMM does because they still control the rest of the world. Meanwhile Kid Miracleman is still trying to get into YMM's head to try and hijack control over his body.

You know, I'm still fricking pissed off about the stunt Marvel pulled with UXM Vol 5 and this Mutant Massacre Prelude omni
    >2022
    >Marvel finally announces this Vol 5 for 2023, which everyone wants because it will finally fill in the gap between the numbered omnis and the crossover omnis
    >but the announcement shows Marvel's skimping out on a whole bunch of key issues, including a couple of annuals and the first several issues of X-Factor (which the Mutant Massacre omni only starts collecting at #10)
    >after pushback, Marvel puts in the two annuals but nothing more
    >people grumble but there's nothing else fans can do
    >2023
    >UXM Vol 5 finally releases
    >then just a few months later, Marvel announces the Prelude omnibus
    >it's everything the Vol 5 should have been in the first place
    Absolutely scumbag move tbqh
I know they're banking on idiots reluctantly double-dipping on the Prelude to replace their Vol 5 and get a better collection, but I feel like money would have come in anyways had they just done one, complete, straightforward omnibus without any bullshit tricks

Yeah, it bites. As much as I'd like to get the more complete version there's just not enough new content to justify the cost.

        Anonymous

I'd like to have a more complete collection too, but there's no way in hell I'm going to pay for it after this stunt. Even if I sold off my Vol 5 to recover the costs (and I doubt it would sell very well anyways), it still means I'd be paying Marvel for two omnis instead of just the one I actually want, which is exactly what they're hoping for.

I hope this was a mistake due to them pushing so many omnis at the time. A lot of stuff got delayed for over a year due to their own oversaturation. They keep missing things in their collections, which is why I think it wasn't malicious. But they are still releasing the highly requested Secret Wars omni with half of the previous Hickvengers omni in it, so they may as well be fricking moronic.

Keep your copies of V5. It was leaked a while back that only the first printing will have the 1986 Annuals and they will be deleted with later printings, as V6 will include them as originally planned.

Will we ever get a new X Statix one?

They'll almost certainly reprint the X-Statix Omnibus eventually, since omnibus collecting is a much bigger thing post-covid. But IIRC, the original printing back in the day didn't sell very well and I don't think it's been on any of the community reprint polls in recent years, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

You're right about Marvel just churning them out these days (which on the one hand is pretty great, because it means a hell of a lot of different runs are finally getting collected in nice big hardcovers), but I really don't think that there's anything more to this manufactured problem than simple money-grabbing.
It'd be one thing if they'd said "oh hey, btw we're going to start having two different approaches to collecting X-Men and you can go for either the full X-Book crossover omnis or the specifically Uncanny X-Men numbered omnis" alongside the original announcement of Vol 5, but they only communicated that AFTER the book had been fully released. There was absolutely zero indication or even just any reason to theorise that there'd ever be a more complete, alternative way of bridging the gap, which is why I think the whole thing was just Marvel deliberately screwing us over.

It's a shame there's no general "Spider-Man" omni or collection that collects all the books in order including Spectacular and the like. From what I've seen most of them only do ASM and relevant issues from other books

Characters that had multiple titles running tend to be a real shit show to collect. For as much of a headache as Spidey can be he's still way more streamlined than X-men

Yeah. Unfortunately you got like Uncanny, New Mutants, Factor and Excalibur all running so maybe it would have been a better to focus less on one specific title and just do like all the x-books of a certain time in one volume and so forth down

    >all these Omnibuses
Just do more fricking Complete Collecions and actually give some attention to anything older than the 2000s when doing them. Epic Collections are annoying because they're just random instead of collecting shit straight through.

I don't care about having stuff that "looks nice" because I'm not fricking displaying it or collecting it to collect it. I buy shit because I want to read it and I'm not a rich man so I can't just blow $125 on omnibuses whenever I feel like it. If DC has Marvel beat in anything right now it's in having lower priced TPBs that still collect a lot like their Compendiums... it's just that they wind up canceling them when they don't sell.

Epics do collect stuff straight through, not random. Their print/production order however is not chronological. They still need to do a volume to finish O'Neill Iron Man. But I have large sets of O'Neill then Michelinie/Layton IM, Stern Avengers, DeFalco Thor and FF, Gruenwald Cap. I love the Epics. Far superior to unwieldy omni's.

Oh god it's not just me. Some Omnis are just a real pain to lug around right? The first Spider-man 2099 is almost 1400 pages. It's a phone book. I really wouldn't mind seeing this take a reduction in size (at an appropriately reduced cost)

Honestly they should have just released them in order. I think $45-$50 is a little overpriced as it's more than one of DC Compendium's for maybe 1/3 of the content but it's a reasonable enough substitution for the old Essential line it replaced which was a great way to get into older stuff.

Nah, If they did that a lot of eras wouldn't even be closed to be being reached and I actually appreciate have more eras to pull from instead of just getting the same early collections we've seen a dozen times over.
        >I think $45-$50 is a little overpriced
Most direct market retailers will sell them for about half that. I don't think I've ever made more than around 25ish if I wasn't getting some out of print marked up volume.

It's worth noting that when the Epic Collections started, it was pretty easy to get the softcover Marvel Masterworks that covered most of the Silver Age, so it makes sense for the early releases to steer clear of those. The hardcover Marvel Masterworks for Iron Man have only caught up to the first release (Volume 10, The Enemy Within) this year.

The omnibus editions also pretty well cover most series early years. Both FF and Avengers have their first decade and a half or so covered in their entirety.

I don't mean early years specifically but shit like (for example) the Defenders Epics only covering about half of the Gerber run, then skipping ahead to DeMatteis so stuff like Kraft's run is missed. I'm sure you can probably get it in some other line but that's the problem, I shouldn't HAVE to buy a possibly more expensive TPB from a totally different line (if it's even still in print), just do it straight through at an affordable price. Don't release shit at random.

            Anonymous

You don't HAVE to do anything. Most of the stories back then can be enjoyed on their own within their own volumes. And you're still underestimating how long and short some of these runs were.

            Anonymous

I’m not sure Kraft is available in another format. The omnis are of reasonable size, but only go up to the end of gerber now.
Kraft’s Defender’s scorpio story with Moon Knight (the the one MK uses a can of beer to keep from drowning) is in the first MK omni which isn’t reasonably sized. So yeah, you’re fricked. I’d likethe Kraft run as well. That MK/Defenders story is a favorite of mine because it’s just fricking weird.

X-men is weirdly strongly collected. It's at a point where the biggest gaps we have to fill now are the pre AoA stuff and pre and post onslaught eras. I'd really have figured they'd have done a Fatal Attractions omnibus or something too. That seems obvious.

          Anonymous

          >X-men is weirdly strongly collected.
It's not necessarily weird. X-Men is basically a franchise within a franchise. It's got an incredibly strong fanbase and will always sell really well, so it makes sense for Marvel to have pumped out so many omnis for them.
What IS weird is the way in which Marvel has ended up doing the omnis, thanks to printing them out of order and collecting the 80s and 90s X-over events well before the numbered volumes of Uncanny came close to that period. And considering X-Men eventually gets so many spin-off titles and miniseries which all weave in and out of each other, it's much harder to collect in a straightforward manner. Marvel either has to collect X-Men through event/story-centric omnis and mapping out various different titles and minis in the best, or they collect it through strictly one-title-only numbered volumes (which is what we're going to start getting with the original X-Factor later this year, despite the fact that 40 issues of X-Factor except for the first 8 are already all collected in the event omnis). They went with the first option initially, but now they seem to be shifting tack and focusing on just collecting single titles.

The Spider-Man and Fantastic Four omnibus lines are gonna hit a similar problem soon as well. The numbered FF vols will have double-dipping issues with the Byrne omnis once they get up to that point, while 80s Spidey is going to have to deal with how to collect Amazing, Spectacular, and Web of, AND deal with the fact that they've already done a bunch of creator-centric Spidey omnis for that period.
          >It's at a point where the biggest gaps we have to fill now are the pre AoA stuff and pre and post onslaught eras.
Well they recently announced the Road to Onslaught omni(s) and a proper X-Tinction Agenda omnibus, so that's going some way to filling those gaps. Let's just hope Marvel doesn't pull any more shenanigans.

NTA, but what was the MM stunt again? Is it the missing X-Force issues?
I dislike the event omnis for other reasons. I get the idea of putting everything in ‘reading order’ but it makes the individual titles feel disjointed.

It's basically the same book as X-men vol 5, but with the handful of extra X-factor issues which should have been there to start with. If you don't already have X-men 5 you're in the clear but there's not enough incentive for people who do to rebuy it but but it's also different enough to make us feel like we got screwed a bit.

                Anonymous

Yeah, I’ve got V5, but I’m not a fan of X-Factor, so it’s mot a big deal for me. But I get why some are mad. I think there’s a Secret Wars omni coming out that, aside from the SW mini, is a complete Hickman Avengers double dip.

                Anonymous

The real problem is that volume 5 isn't even that old and they're already releasing it a little over a year later. It might be one thing if some older volume got some reworking but anyone who bought 5 probably wasn't expecting to see this is so short a span of time and would have just as likely waited.

Really wish they would have A. used "Asgardian War" for the title of the book intead of Mutant Massacre Prelude and B. Alter the issue count to make it different from V5 and toss in some New Mutant stuff for padding.

    Ideally:

    Nimrod introduction subplot pages
    X-Men/Alpha Flight #1-2
    UXM #194 (Nimrod vs X-Men)
    Lifedeath II subplot pages
    UXM #198 (Lifedeath II)
    Longshot #1-6
    X-Men Legends V2 #3-4 (Nocenti's sequel to Longshot)
New Mutants #28-34 (the entire Shadow King arc which leads directly into Asgardian Wars)
    X-Men #199
    New Mutants Special Edition #1
    Uncanny X-Men Annual #9
    Uncanny X-Men #200-201
    New Defenders #151-152
    Avengers #263
    Fantastic Four #286
X-Factor #1-7(no Annual #1 or crossovers; force you to buy the X-Factor Omnibus for them)
    Uncanny X-Men #205-209
    New Mutants Annual #2
    Uncanny X-Men Annual #10
    Uncanny X-Men #210
    X-Factor #8-9

Some overlap yes, but works better since the 1986 Annuals have to come after UXM #210 chronologically. The New Mutants Shadow King arc and X-Men/Alpha Flight also sets up Asgardian Wars and I include the X-Men Legends material to go with the Longshot mini, which I move into a better fit chronological position storyline-wise.

And if the artwork still exists, I'd also include the two issues of the unreleased Phoenix mini and have Claremont include the two scripts for final two issues or some sort of text summary of how the mini would end. This inclusion alone would justify the rebuy given the unreleased nature of the Phoenix mini.

I don't mind some overlap. Generally giving how many different series and books are out there it's honestly inevitable to have some. But there's a few instances like this were books are too close. Captain America by Jack Kirby and Cap omni 4 are almost LITERALLY the same book. I've even seen it happen in some epics. Both X-force and X-men have an X-cutioners song volume and there's like barely any difference except each title getting a handful of issues from their respective book.
