The part of his story in Annihilation before he became a war general was having to deal with mentor figures trying to use him or frick him over for their own benefit (Drax to get out of Xandar, Worldmind to preserve itself) and the one person who didn't Rich gets them killed for being impulsive. It's about his growth.
Gosling will be pushing 50 when Nova comes out and knowing the MCU they'll waste his talent too.

Nova isn't GL, the corps weren't ever that relevant to him. They weren't even cops until Annihilation Prologue and that retcon happened because Giffen didn't know who the Nova corps was and thought they were just like Green Lanterns.
I am not shitting on him, I like his work, and he killed the corps which was a good move. But him, Nicieza, and Loeb ended up doing the Nova corps into a Green Lanterns corps copy and it's why in people's minds Nova comes off as a GL copy which he was never meant to be.

He has gravimetric powers and under the right writer it can be a creative powerset. Personality wise he's different from her since Carol is overconfident and Rich has an inferiority complex and he's always giving himself impossible to meet standards.
Also Bree Larson was already having cold feet about continuing as Captain Marvel and after The Marvels not meeting expectations, Kamala being a better character, she probably wants out.
