I'll admit I think I was too young when I saw this movie and I didn't get it. Now that I am an old man should I give it another shot. Would it mean more to me having lived and seen a lot more of life?
While it is a fantastic movie with the best naval action ever put to film and almost perfect casting (the leads, Killick, etc, only Bonden sadly miscast) it is a complete misunderstanding of the character of Maturin, turning him into a whiny liberal almost wimp. Read the books, trust me, it will be one of the most enriching piterary experiences of your life.
Surely some of the best novels ever written, especially the first 3. But the series as a whole makes it a transcendental experience, you really know these people. And I have rarely read anyone who has such a fine eye for the minute details of human behavior as O'brien. I just finished reading all 20 for the second time last year, going to give it a little time before I start again, but it is surely coming.
hornblower is superior because you couldnt buy a commission in the navy
sharpes writer uses that as a crutch when he needs another bumbling fool to pull rank on the chosen men
both are 10/10 shows
So many possibilities are opening up. They say: you can't just turn a novel into a movie, well now we can test it. Could take all 20 of Obrien's novels and adapt every scene. The action like action, most like a regular movie, some where it's about the prose like a silent movie with voice over, some in the style of a video essay or travelogue, just whatever fits the scene best. Casting whoever you'd like. I'd have the narrator from Jesse James speaking with a vaguely British accent read it, the main cast from master and commander can stay with a fatter Crowe, Tom hardy as Bonden and some great British actors of the 40s and 50s as the admiralty.
Saw it on the big screen again a few months ago. So much kino. Obviously the audience was into it, it's become a but if a cult movie since initial release. Good audiences can really make a film experience better, just like bad audiences can take away somewhat.
Yeah it was pretty awesome. I like the movie much more now than it's initial release, so happy to see it again. Also saw Heavy Metal on the big screen recently. Not a good movie but fun as hell, especially with a good audience. Surprising number of women in the audience too, at both films now that I think about it.
Different theaters in LA. One great consolation prize to living here is great movie theater choices, for films both new and old. Got to see a double feature of 1930s screwball comedies on 35mm last week.
And the reason is not that the books lack naval action. Especially the first and the fourth are almost nothing but naval action. And not against some American privateer chasing whalers but against the Napoleonic navy. Just because an IQ of what must be around 103 makes you feel you have an insight that the average person lacks doesn't mean youre not a fricking idiot, little buddy. Try reading a whole book instead of an online synopsis written by people as shitbrained as yourself for a change. Though you might not be up for the challenge.
>sophisticated and big brained
kek what does that have to do with anything? unsophisticated slop gets made into movies all the time.

>is it true there is a place in a man's boat that if you shoot it, it will blow up?
