You're right overall, I was thinking more along the lines of combat arms (not that Merchant Marines never engaged in combat). The USAAF bombing campaigns were by and large waged against specific targets of military value. If you want to gripe about indiscriminately bombing civilians you need to go after the Bongs and their nighttime area bombing.
The USAAF laundered their reputation post-war. They did plenty of area bombing with fig-leaf excuses like “we were aiming for that factory”.
