Any position in war where you're in direct combat is fricking terrifying. You could be blown out of existence at any second and not even know what did it.

It doesn't matter how competent or how much training you've had.

IIRC bomber crews had the highest casualty rates per capita amongst any American branch during the war. Daylight bombing was very dangerous until technology (long range escorts deployed en mass) and tactics (preemptive fighter sweeps) caught up.

The US Merchant Fleet had the highest casualties, they were actually doing something useful instead of bombing civilians and crying about it.

after convoys + sonar + picket radar based anti sub warfare became the norm US had zero risk sailing across the pond, and it was more just an invitation to sink some uboats for bored destroyer captains

        >The US Merchant Fleet had the highest casualties
You're right overall, I was thinking more along the lines of combat arms (not that Merchant Marines never engaged in combat). The USAAF bombing campaigns were by and large waged against specific targets of military value. If you want to gripe about indiscriminately bombing civilians you need to go after the Bongs and their nighttime area bombing.

The USAAF laundered their reputation post-war. They did plenty of area bombing with fig-leaf excuses like “we were aiming for that factory”.

The Soviets can frick off with that death toll shite. The main reason it was so high for them is because from 1st September 1939 until 22nd June 1941 they were in bed with the Nazis. Not to mention the exchange of resources and expertise between those two satanic regimes for years prior to the war.
