The Animatrix wasn't very good. Including that segment you like. Same for the games while we're at it (all of them).

It's one great film, then some great action scenes in some bad sequels. It's not a setting/universe.

      Anonymous

Animatrix was kino, probably the best animated feature since 'Fantasia' and ominously predictive programming. To combat global warming, the wienersucker with the man-breasts Bill Gates proposed using nanomachines pumped into our atmosphere to lessen the sunlight. As for the video games, people still talk about the original Matrix Online to this day, Enter the Matrix was clunky with its camera and targeting system but was an amazing game to weave in separate scenes and characters not prominently featured in the movie fantastically. Path of Neo was a masterpiece desperately in need of a remaster.

out of all the stories/settings that took the postmodern wink-wink meta route, The Matrix is quite possibly the worst choice.

the Narnia kids going through another cupboard to find out they were all in some books, or Sherlock Holmes meeting Arthur Conan Doyle to complain the stories about the stories about him were DOUBLE exaggerated, something like that.

the action and set-pieces of 4 were so boring. 1's realistic fighting was great, in a kung-fu kind of way, 2 and 3 went full shonen and that was super fun, but nothing excited me in 4. The locations were boring, I didn't know who they were fighting and why, I think it even opened with some literal who's fighting. Everyone can remember scenes from the originals, the bullet dodging, the pole spin kicks, the super saiyan battle at the end of 3. What is there to remember from 4?

The setting does kind of lend itself to a "cinematic universe" so I understand the impulse.
I dunno... it will probably just be some schlop. whatever. These studios think they can test the waters to see if they can get a cinematic universe to stick, but the success of Marvel was because they doubled down it on and went all in. If this were to happen, you'd need that commitment and I'd be surprised if it gets there

Does anyone else just dimly remember a time when bad product = no money = not make more product

When did that stop being the rule? I swear the structure of reality itself has a "loose" feeling to it now, to me, because I just know that money means nothing (despite also meaning everything??) and everything is just made up of these nonsensical flows of funnymoney propping up failing garbage for 500 years, while the one good/innovative thing that emerges in a certain industry or domain will fail within 3 years despite being successful (????) and then "have to be taken over" by investors/managers who then... run the product into the ground... but also make the company too big to fail????? So that it also lasts 500 years as One Of Those Big Companies You Just Sort of Accept Are Eternal even though the original product has been diluted and turned into unrecognizable shit?

I swear I feel like I'm dreaming while awake sometimes. I had a dream last night that I fricked this girl I used to know Erica, and she handed me a trombone and I just started playing it. I accepted the trombone in that dream with the same exact mental and emotional reaction, the same act, as I accepted hearing "There will be a Matrix 5" just now upon reading this thread. Sure Erica just make more Matrix movies whatever
