Technically it's Kyle. His parents weren't that cruel.

His friend is named Ham because he likes ham radio, so the name Database implies he likes collecting and storing data

I mean he is kinda lame, he’s the filler nerd. Both Martin and Lisa are used as the smart characters over him and he’s only ever used when they need a third smart guy or need to fill space in a scene with nerds, like being at a convention or something. Even Milhouse can take priority over him as a nerd character despite Milhouse not even being that smart.

Milhouse is a dork. He can like dorky things like comics, videogames, and bi-mon-sci-fi-con. Database is a nerd, from before the time nerd was just a suffix meaning "I like the noun before this". He's into most of that plus computer programing, astronomy, and math.

You're pretty much right. There are vanishingly few reasons to bring another nerd character into a larger story that isn't part of a mental pissing contest. It would be way too nuanced to hammer out a specific niche of nerd expertise that would routinely come up. And at most there may be teams that form that need a smart voice in the group. But three or more teams is probably pushing what an episode can do in any reasonable time and as you've pointed out Martin and Lisa are up first.

He'd need to have something other than "Is a nerd" on his rap sheet. Like... frick I don't know idolizing Homer because he keeps track of all the shit that happened in the show and Homer is one of only three people he knows of that is a Rockstar, an Astronaut, an Operatic virtuoso, a Pro boxer with a 44-1 record, and a secret agent that helped take down the head of the local mafia. But that would probably get annoying by instance #3.

So just make him irving? I guess that would work if executed properly

Irving was pretty annoying from the few appearances that I remember, even if he was planned from the begining. Replacing him with Baljeet was a good decision

Milhouse doesn't have the obsessive focus of a geek.

Groening hates nerds and geeks but loves sci-fi and fantasy stuff. He's Dobson if he was successful. His comics are just as preachy and shitty too.

I assume it's because even for a Simpsons character he's one note and grating

    It's a Black person, basically.
Read up on Matt Groening and his track record of racism and anti-black and israeli dog whistling.
I continue to hope that his Black personmania persona will get doxxed at some point, but I won't be the guy to do it. Yet.

Nancy Cartwright said he should get more episodes but then again if voice actors could write they would be writers.

What niche does this character have that wouldn't be better served by Lisa or Martin?
