Mattie Franklin/Spider-woman III

Did the editors just hate her or something? Because I'm struggling to think of a character that got put through a more undignified series of events. Then she was just killed off, and hasn't been brought back like every other Spider. Honestly, what the frick is up with that?

Part of it is that she was the most superfluous Spider-Woman

Jessica was on the Avengers, Julia had been on the West Coast Avengers and at least had developed a history with them

Mattie was another one of Byrne's creepy "underage girl hitting on full grown men" fantasies. She didn't have an interesting hook to her, something that set her apart from the other Spider-people

So before the first Spider-Verse when they were slimming down the Spider family as much as they could to consolidate things to try to improve sales for whoever was left, they killed Mattie and Madame Web, canceled Mayday's book, took Anya's unique identity and costume aware and sidelined Julia

First was that Byrne pissed off a lot of people during the time Mattie was Spider-Woman (readers and people internally at Marvel, for different reasons)
Second was Byrne pissed off Bendis by trashing Bendis' Alias based on just the news about it rather than reading the book
      And also what said
      Bendis was pushing Jessica Drew
Other people want to push for Anya to be Spider-Girl

So it was basically open season on Mattie

Ironically she'd be a better love interest for Miles compared to Spider-Gwen

I kind of feel like the intention was to make her a kid sidekick to Peter or to make her the 616 equivalent of Mayday after they saw how popular she was. Her being a huge fan of Peter's could've been spun into her being the only Spider-Woman that he actually interacted with regularly.

I don't remember anything about her other than she's Jonah Jameson's niece, I think?

      Also isn't she dead? I don't remember.

Marla Jameson is her aunt, and her dad is one of Jonah's closest friends. She moved in with them after her home life went to shit. She then got date raped, hooked on drugs, and pimped out by a group of people who sliced bits of flesh off her to make superpowered drugs. After eventually recovering from that, she moved in with a group of former teen supers. Then that group fell apart, and she lost all her friends. Then she was sacrificed to bring back Kraven.

        The pretty much blend together.

Mackie may have been credited as writer, but it sounds like Byrne had a lot more control over the books than him, as the bigger star, and Mattie was his creation.

Kidnapped by drug dealers who kept her in a perpetually strung out on drugs and raped and prostituted for like... months? While at the same time harvesting her blood to make mutant growth hormone.
Gets freed by Jessica Jones, returns to being a hero and gets her revenge on the MGH drug ring, only to be killed off by the Kravinoffs.

It's weird. I didn't like her when she was introduced, but the treatment of her by various writers was so mean-spirited, that I ended up really sympathetic to Mattie. It's like if the Simpsons had decided to get rid of Poochie by having him tortured to death in a drawn out and unnecessarily long scene. At a certain point it just becomes uncomfortable to watch. Pretty much her last words are her realising that no one's coming to save her, and that no one is going to care that she's gone. it's brutally sad.

Actually same feelings. I didn't read much about her, but in the end it just got sad
and perhaps this is also due to the fact that she is really dead, and not resurrected a little later

Really her entire story boils down to:
              >Spider-Man fangirl gets the chance to be like her hero.
              >Peter isn't around to show her the ropes, because he's retired for the nth time.
              >She sucks at it.
              >Peter gets his shit together and replaces her.
              >She is date raped, hooked on heroin, and pimped out.
              >Specifically referenced that she's so desperate for a fix that the guy who drugged her has her crawling around and barking for him.
              >She falls in with a group of disaffected teen heroes.
              >She sleeps with Ricochet, despite not wanting to, as a ploy to stop him realising that she's on to him.
              >The group collapses, and she looses all her friends.
              >She gives being a superhero one last try, is captured, sacrificed, and her body cannibalised.
              >Not even Jameson seems to care.
It's like Ennis was writing this shit. That kind of thing belongs more in a sequel to Ruins than mainstream Marvel.

Geeze. I thought it was mean-spirited when Stephanie Brown was tortured and fridged.

Where's the "Women in Refrigerators" crowd when they'd actually have a point?

It's mainly cause of when these things happened

                >Spider-Man fangirl gets the chance to be like her hero.
                >Peter isn't around to show her the ropes, because he's retired for the nth time.
                >She sucks at it.
                >Peter gets his shit together and replaces her.

These happened duing Byrne's run, around when the comics reading audience was reduced and Gail was doing the Women in Refridgerators site.

                >She is date raped, hooked on heroin, and pimped out.
                >Specifically referenced that she's so desperate for a fix that the guy who drugged her has her crawling around and barking for him.

This happened in Bendis' Alias in the early 00s. At the time Bendis was super-popular so no one really called him out on that.

                >She falls in with a group of disaffected teen heroes.
                >She sleeps with Ricochet, despite not wanting to, as a ploy to stop him realising that she's on to him.
                >The group collapses, and she looses all her friends.

This happened in CB Cebulski's The Losers, which was like mid-00s.

                >She gives being a superhero one last try, is captured, sacrificed, and her body cannibalised.
                >Not even Jameson seems to care.

This happened in Joe Kelly's Grim Hunt, around 2010, when a lot of people had already bailed on comics, and when the woke crowd was starting to get weaponized against DC but sidestepping Marvel for unknown reasons

Also there weren't that many people who were fans of Mattie back when Byrne was working on the books.

The Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman was pretty popular in the Avengers books in the 90s, so people weren't happy with her getting injured and retiring so Byrne could replace her, there were probably still some older readers around who wanted Jessica Drew back, too.

                Also, while

Part of it is that she was the most superfluous Spider-Woman

Jessica was on the Avengers, Julia had been on the West Coast Avengers and at least had developed a history with them

talked about Mattie hitting on Peter, it happened the month after MJ had apparently died. Peter was broken by grief and Mattie was telling him MJ was meant to die so they could be together. She was possibly the most hated character in Marvel when that happened.

i honestly wonder why Anya hasn't been used as cannon torture fodder yet. I don't think there's anyone left at marvel who still gives even the slightest shit about her.

Most of the shit on Mattie is mainly because of retaliation against Byrne

Could you elaborate on that? I know he had issues with people, but I don't know the specifics.

Bendis did what he did to Mattie in Alias primarily because he was pissed off at Byrne for shitting on Alias without reading it. Byrne at the time heard the news that Alias was going to have a sex scene and ranted about how that's not what you're supposed to do with superheroes

Most of the posts about it are long gone, but some remains in some form:

Joe Quesada co-created her so that's part of the reason why. And he only just fully left Marvel months ago.

You'd think she'd be in more adaptations, even as a civvie, since Jameson having a niece/daughter who is a Spidey fangirl feels like it would be ripe for at least comic relief.

They brought her back in The Clone Conspiracy, only to kill her off again, though at least in a more dignified way, with both Jameson and Silk being devastated by her (re)-death.
