There is no getting in on a spearman who is alert to you. No anime maneuvers you fantasize about can foil simple rapid thrusting with footwork. Fights with blades are a bloody and dirty affair with none of the grace and choreography you see in
fiction. Range and efficiency is everything.

            Anonymous

People mostly just had spears and fought in formations. So naturally there was no fancy choreography for those reasons alone. But eventually weaponry did evolve and change, same as armor evolved, they started to drop shields and go for two hander poleaxes, big two hander swords at the end of the middle ages.

          Anonymous

The spearman can retreat and change his grip closer to the point, you wont be getting inside the range. He doesn't even have to do that because he can always move his spear to be in your way.

        Anonymous

Well, it was mixed arms combat you had pike blocks, guns, canons and also cavalry. If it was just pikes and canons then pike lines would have had a hard time, but cav helped for flanking and mobility.
That and guns were not as powerful or accurate as they would become later.

If I was forced into a gladiator arena and had to choose a single weapon from a variety of ancient/medieval weapons, of course I'm getting the spear. What type of moron chooses a sword?

But let's hope my opponent doesn't know how to use a bow or sling. I'm going with a spear 'cause I don't know how to use them myself.

Unless you mean as seen by the popular culture, which is probably true. Sword was seen as more glamorous and mythologized even back then. Took more craftsmanship to make too.

Note the word pole, not spear.
The average speargay is a pseud because he conflates all polearms as just another spear, then pretending that the advantages of all polearms mean that spears are the ultimate superweapon of the pre gunpowder world

        Anonymous

not true at all. it was spears + phalanx until celts (and I think germans) superseded it with sword +board + javelins, the romans copied that after getting fricked by them and built their empire with it.

then heavy cavalry became dominant and polearms were obligatory to counter them but everyone still had swords because when ranks closed with other infantry their polearms became useless.

They don't usually have armies fighting correctly, it's just a disordered melee most of the time with enemy soldiers getting inside the enemy ranks. They also like to say "fire" when they are shooting arrows even though those commands only came around with guns, arches would just shoot at their own pace on enemy armies, shooting in waves like that makes it easier for them to prepare for incoming arrows.

All you have to do is deflect a thrust ones (with a shield/sword or even just evade it) and cut the distance, then spear is practically useless.

yes although not as easy as it sounds but even if he stabs you the spear man probably gets fatally stabbed as well. more realistically you are armored or shielded and then the spearman at best wounds you before you kill him, but of course that is 1v1 which is why they used phalanxes though those were of course countered too

Ah spear autism, nice to see some /tg/ cross pollination.

Anyway, autism aside I'm pretty sure spears are overrated. By far their greatest strength is in organized unit fighting. Which is inherently unromantic as it dehumanizes the individual as a expendable cog in a greater machine. Not the greatest stuff for cultural myth.
