any kids movie can make money when it has zero competition. my local kinoplex is still playing this film just because it’s their only kids movie.

This. It's not a real success. In fact, maybe it's the first flop of Illumination?

        Anonymous

It's not a flop, the budget was 72 million, it made money, Illumination doesn't have any single movie where they lost money.

        That would be Hop.

        Anonymous

It's not a flop, it didn't JUST scrap by, but it wasn't a success either. It was like, a very modest breaking even film. It made its money back plus a bit of profit. Since Illumination movies don't cost so much, even a $40mil profit does quite a bit for them.

        Anonymous

Forgot about Hop? Also, the budget was $72m. Even on low end break evens, it made money. It wasn't going to make Super Mario money and nobody really expected it to.

Migration had competition in Wish and came out on top.

      Anonymous

Is it kind of like the case of "Elemental" then (disappointing opening, but decent word-of-mouth and not much competition for kids helped it have long legs)?

        Anonymous

More like Puss in Boots, which had a disaster of an opening only to swing back into real success on word of mouth alone, even with competition. Godzilla Minus 1 did 5x its opening weekend on the craziest legs.

Audiences do know quality and will keep coming back if it doesn’t blow chunks.

Wish *was* the competition. They opened only 2 weeks apart, but Migration is still playing in 2400+ theaters, while Wish is in 75.
This is not a victory for Migration. It's more like Wish tripped out of the gate, broke its leg, and had a bullet put in its head.

You saw a statistic and made some redundant, pointless thread about a made up competition you had no stakes in, just because you've seen other anons do the same thing and you wanted to fit in.

It's an ideological thing. Illumination is pretty inoffensive, while Disney pushes diversity and girlboss shit. So Cinemaphile roots for Illumination even if their movies are painfully bland and forgettable.

Probably 2 - 4 times as much as the actual film. Even without other logistical factors like transportation of the merch, this film is throughly totalled.

How are they going to get rid of all this merch no one wants? Everyone involved in making this film including Jennifer Lee should be fired and replaced, but somehow I am sure all of them will receive promotions and pay raises.

          >How are they going to get rid of all this merch no one wants?
Giant shredder, like they did Star Wars toys.

That's not a joke. Following The Last Jedi's historic drop, merch sales went hard into the red for Hasbro regarding SW toys with tons of stock that even liquidation services like Ollies wouldn't touch, leading to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=n676fndXxCc

Apologies for the youtube video, Disney has been cracking down hard on that image originally posted here https://twitter.com/ItchyBacca/status/1191800470525886470 and now it's pretty much been scrubbed off google. They really did not want you to see a giant ass pallet of SW merch just being pushed into a massive fricking shredder because nobody, not even people who flip pallets for pennies, wanted it. This is where Wish Merch is ending up in a month or two.
