It's not a flop, it didn't JUST scrap by, but it wasn't a success either. It was like, a very modest breaking even film. It made its money back plus a bit of profit. Since Illumination movies don't cost so much, even a $40mil profit does quite a bit for them.
Forgot about Hop? Also, the budget was $72m. Even on low end break evens, it made money. It wasn't going to make Super Mario money and nobody really expected it to.
