Battle shonen MCs are always brute force types or given the most basic powers. Look at Naruto, a world with all sorts of jutsu and he just spams clones and Rasengan
Naruto got also sexy jutsu, rasenshuriken, oodama rasengan, sennin mode with two clones used in different way, walking on water, walking on air, body replacement technique, all the kyubi powers in several modes, 6paths mode and even with basic taijutsu he got more than basic punches, he had many combos with his clones.
compared to JJK Naruto was delightfully creative with the main characters powers and the way fights were won.
JKK had one good fight in the first season with clap dude but it was worth watching for the story up to that point.

I think the answer is something like sorcerers mostly focus on supernatural shit exclusively, and that even if they're extremely powerful they can't really stop an entire military single-handedly (and there's only like a handful of sorcerers at any one time). Also it's possible it's something like: the conditions that led to the war in the first place were brought about because the sorcerers fricked up, and some super powerful curse(s) are freed and end up manipulating certain people to bring about the war.
