Maybe I missed something but Why does nobody ever question or think it's weird that his first name is "Monkey"? All the other characters have normal names even the characters that are part animal like Arlong. You'd think his first name would at least be a running gag or something
Monkey isn’t his first name though
Not according to Google
his name is luffy monkey d but the japanese always present the surname first, what makes it even weirder is when oda presents them inverted, like with whitebeard, edward newgate, his name is the latter but his last name is the former
Wait so Blackbeards name is Teach Marshall?
yes, that why no one calls him marshall d, same with big mom and her children, their last name is charlotte, rayleigh silvers, roger gol d, etc
>Wait so Blackbeards name is Teach Marshall?
No it was Edward Teach
That’s the IRL teach not the OP one
So you cleanly know Blackbeard's name but never wondered why Luffy, his father, and his grandfather all have the same first name but different last names? Bait.
d is the middle name moron
Where does it say that?
Haven't watched it but I thought it was a asiaticism to say last name first. So his name is really luffy d monkey. Garp is his grandfather, and his name is Garp d monkey
basically, he is monkey
He's Brazilian.
I've never watched the anime or the LA, can someone tell me why he's made of rubber and what the frick he wants?
he is the incarnation of the sun god and he wants to be king of the pirates
He ate tge devil fruit that made him rubber. He wants to find the one piece and be king of the pirates
The frick is the "one piece"? One piece of what? And why did a devil fruit make him rubber?
The show fricked it up. Rogers was supposed to say he left all his treasure in one piece. Which is why the hoard is called the one piece.
roger never says "one piece"
Why even ask dumb questions like this if you don't understand the show? That's like asking why wizards at Hogwarts have powers and what powers are.
>why ask questions if you don't know something?
You might be the most moronic person in this website
YOHOHO he took a bite of gum-gum!
Robin Nico
spoil me, what does the D mean? I know it's a big deal.
Deez nuts
I walked right into that one didn't I.
not known yet but something with killing/destroying gods/World Gov
Hasn't been revealed yet but most likely D stands Devil, the tribe of people who are rebellious by nature and oppose the ~~*world government*~~ which is run by kings and queens who call themselves heavenly dragons/gods/nobles/celestials/angels
it stands for don
=D
XD
etc.
the D
Deh
8===D
he is supposed to be white, not this favelado bullshit
>he is supposed to be white
You people are fricking insane
>says the long nosed schizophrenic eunuch
If anything he's Japanese-Brazilian, not white you fricking troglodyte
I imagine the japs were too polite to tell them no when they casted all the abominacions
Oda himself has said he'd be Brazilian
>we wuz anime n shiet
pinkoids really be appropriating anime characters
Luffy D Monkey
Garp D Monkey
Zoro Roronoa
Chopper Toni Toni
Mihawk Dracule
Law Trafalgar
Doflamingo Donquixote
It’s a nip thing to say last name first, just in one piece the names are romanised too
Maybe it's because there's only really Luffy, Zoro and Mihawk with mentioned surnames in S1 but I figured normies would have picked up on it. It only gets even more confusing when characters with surnames that can also be first names start showing up like Edward, Marshall, Charlotte, Basil and Eustass.
D stands for Dream. It's govment propaganda that it's Devil.
Monkey is his last name
DID YA SEE THAT ONE, LAD?
HIS PANCREAS CAME RIGHT OUT OF HIS TEAR DUCT
KEK
sauce?
it's edited. ''monkey = brazilian or african'' is a western thing
you might believe this, but in japan and korea, ''monkey = japanese'' unironically
Yes but sauce anyway
Terrarium in Drawer
Ty
>All the other characters have normal names
what the frick constitutes a normal name for you? Basil Hawkins? Jesus Burgess? fricking Trafalgar Law? there' s a guy literally called Caesar Clown, Oda doesn't know how foreign names work.
>Oda doesn't know how foreign names work
it's not unusual for jap mangakas or authors to just pick western words that sound somewhat cool or special to the japanese audience but don't really carry some special meaning in the original language, sometimes even sound weird as a name.
if you pay attention you'll see it everywhere, games like no more heroes, final fantasy, anime like gits and others i can't tell off the top of my head.
one piece being a prime example since it heavily borrows it's names from the IRL pirate era as well as european and american history in general
Yeah, in my opinion Miura was one of the few mangaka who had a good grasp on what would be more-or-less grounded names for Berserk's characters with some exceptions (like Zodd)
>Miura
don't know much about him, but wasn't he sort of well read on the middle ages and early modern era?
>people trying to apply meaning to comics made for children about shooty shooty bang bang and super powers
lol
>first name
In japan the family name comes first
Family name (monkey), middle initial (d), actual name (luffy)
You can see this in Monkey D. Garp's and Monkey D. Dragon's names.
If Oda was a westerner he would write it as Luffy D. Monkey.
>Monkey D Luffy
>Monkey D Dragon
>Monkey D Garp
Oh shit guys, they're all named Monkey!?`
Grandfather from another mother
Deepest lore.
I mean, he's Brazilian.
He's Mexican.
Same thing
same Sopa D Macaco enjoyer
>Sopa D. Macaco
>Sopa D. Macaco
MY SIDES
>make brazilian character
>named monkey
>ends up related to the sopa de macaco meme
SUCH POTTERY!
Base D. Poster
The character, moron.
lol
Brazil doesn't exist in the One Piece world, moron.
It's even dumber in the manga. Sengoku reveals to the world that Luffy is Dragon's son but doesn't mention to everyone that he's related to Garp. In fact, not a single person in the Navy, besides Sengoku, even references the fact that Luffy is related to Garp.
