Just because Kirk's life is worse than Homer's doesn't mean Homer's is good. Having to work a 9 to 5 job means you've essentially failed at life.
Not as hard as some people, but you have failed nonetheless: you got out of school only to enter another loop that steals your time.
You only live once and you've decided to give up 50 hours a week of your life (plus sleep hours that you'd have to give up anyways) until you're old.

If you study something worthwhile and do well you can avoid all that shit, make a ton of money, and retire early or something like that

More money for what? Homer already has a big house, easy job, friends, hot wife and 3 kids, hell he could have had just 1 or 2 kids

And in another he goes to fricking space. Homer's only problem is wanting to stay in Springfield. He did a good job and got a good life as a middle manager for Hank Scorpio.

Working hours and salaries are studied precisely so people have enough money to get by and consume, but not enough to get out of the class they were born under.
Little improvements like that would destabilize the wageslave machine and help people get better, which means they'd never happen.

          Anonymous

They used to think a 5 day week would never happen, 6 was the norm with 1 day of rest. Through unions and strike action workers fought to get that extra day. Now that technology is replacing jobs at an increased rate, we can fight to adjust again.
These things aren't set in stone, working conditions are always being changed. Companies want the worst, cheapest conditions possible, workers want the best, easiest conditions, and little adjustments for better or worse are constantly being made.Just have to keep balancing that middle ground.

billionaires are 99 times out 100 born into wealth, which gives them the freedom to explore business ideas without consequence. they can fail 5 times before landing on their first successful venture, or go years without generating profit. normal people get maybe one chance at a successful business, and end up with a lifetime of debt if they fail.

How do people end up with a lifetime of debt when bankruptcy exists? If you "sell" ie move any assets into the name of someone you trust and then just declare bankruptcy while holding only unsecured debt how do you wear any long term impact?

Am I the only one who looked down on Homer? He lives paycheck to paycheck, is stuck with an expensive home repair, car fix or hospital bill every other episode, is married to a woman who always nags & prevents him from enjoying his life, lives in a house that seems nice but has many problems (like the lead paint), three kids who constantly make him stressed & frantic, etc. That, & his marriage seems to be barely held together in most episodes.

I never got how Homer was supposed to be seen as a "winner." Honestly, I would love to watch a series where he or another sitcom leading man never had a wife or kids & just had fun adventures with his drinking buddies.

not him but he's saying homer isn't supposed to be a winner, he was never the winner.
he's a drunken loser, bad father, bad husband, too dumb to do his job and constantly getting into crazy scenarios because of his bad decision making.

the grimes episode is one of the few that puts his life in a good light. from a certain point of view, he does look like a winner at least compared to grimes. family, beautiful wife, big house, met multiple presidents, been to space, serving lobster to guests and seemingly beloved by everyone in town; on paper compared to a childless single workaholic he seems to be living the good life.
but that was just one episode. every other episode makes it clear he's a loser, that's even the whole point of flanders in the early seasons. in good shape, always has the latest appliances and vehicles, well behaved kids, beautiful, non-nagging wife. flanders was the winner homer was comparing himself to.

tl;dr homer was always supposed to be a loser

    >YOU NEED TO STUDY OR ELSE YOU WILL HAVE AN AWFUL LIFE LIKE MINE!
It's not wrong. I'm a life long learner and by extension doer and maker.
The older I get the more I see people don't so anything. They kind of exist while their lives get worse or even simply more unfilling.
The thing is you have to learn how to learn, schools and universities should be more upfront about that. A lot of people go through education and they learn how to navigate those systems but they never learn how to learn let alone to find joy in acquiring and using new knowledge.
You don't want to live the slop life but unfortunately that seems to be the destiny for 90%+ of the people out there
