Disallowing any of the female water benders from fighting along with better city planning and active military allowed them to survive.
The Southern Tribe was fricking stupid letting their entire population of water bending women die off cause of their moronic equal opportunity warrior tradition.
The North was smart by banning the practice and making women focus on crucial sport roles like medicine and manufacturing.
If the South weren't a bunch of backwards slow slingers they would have released women of the tribe could support the fight at home without unnecessary risk to the future of their people.
Keeping them off the front lines was a smart move, but refusing to teach powerful, valuable, and largely irreplaceable assets any kind of self defense skills at all was stupid.
