And better than any of them. There is not a single western that comes close to the story(simple as it is) or character building in RDR 1 or 2 and no amounts of muh cinematics, muh ebin acting muh deeper themes and philosophy muh gritty reality can change this fact. A video game has surpassed every single western in the last 70 years by a wide margin and only nostalgia gays, "old good new bad" homunculi and LARPing zoomers pretend otherwise

because the writing in it was pretty bad. there was dutch which was the leader but you could tell the writers designated him as a bad leader. then there was an antagonist to him which was micah and he was some cardboard cutout of bulletpoints of what what a villain should act as, so in the end it was all pretty formulaic

          >Marriage? A sacred institution? Heh, it's anything but in my experience, brother, I can tell you that. If two fellers wanna tie the knot, who am I ta say no? If the Lord ain't judged our gang, I'd say he's been takin' some time off the job, yer probably safe. Heh heh. Have at it, I say.

          >Abortion? Well, that's a rough one. Bit of a tough pill to swaller. At first, I didn't rightly take kindly to the idea of killin' babies, but Dutch gave me this ole thick science book and I pretty much surmised that well, that thing is about as human as Micah here, which is lackin' to say the least, heh. Hell, I'd say a gal has the right to choose.

          >A gal? As president? Well, what I can tell ya is its been nothin' but fellers since this whole thing here started up and what have we got? A bunch of other dead fellers. What have we got ta lose? I reckon' tryin' a gal's touch wouldn't do anyone no harm. If weakness is a concern of yours, I promise you some of the ladies runnin' in my gang would probably make Old Hickory look like a nancy in comparison. Hell, I'd reckon its her turn.

          >Lettin' a black feller do yer wife? Well, if the old lady's havin' fun, who am I to deny her that? I reckon that feller's got a bigger one than me anyway. Besides, we gotta pay some back for that whole slavery bid'ness we did to them. Dutch raised me and I ain't his real son, so I'll raise my wife's son, whether he's black or white.

          >Cuttin off yer willie sure sound silly but I reckon a feller might as well chop it off he ain't goin use it. And i suppose a wig can't do harm neither, heck men use to wear em all the time back in oldin' days.

It's also telling that once violence breaks out they're completely helpless and Arthur has to protect them. Oh and it's telling (and hilarious) that they need Arthur to drive. That entire mission is just taking pot shots at feminists and it's still too woke for you because you're such a weeping vegana. You can't kill any mission critical NPCs. That's how video games work. You can't shoot Dutch at any point in the game, even when he goes insane and gets everyone killed.

The first three are just fine though. Their entire philosophy is freedom, just like the pirates, and they strongly believe in the American Dream: that you could leave England as a nobody and be your own man in the New World. Thus it would hypocrisy to start judging who a man is with, even if *you* wouldn't do that. *You* wouldn't kill your child, but she should have the freedom to choose. If a man can come to America and redefine himself, why can't a woman? Doesn't that mean we judge each by their character instead of their messed up past? Didn't Sadie earn the gang's respect by her deeds? The game was literally about choices and ended with this message. It's quite hard to refute the first three and are things the characters woulda actually say.

                >American Dream
Did you even play this game? Their hatred of police and The Law in general was based in their strong belief in freedom. To the average person that just wants safety, they were all to eager to see an end to cowboys and modernize the West, but to the cowboys it was a massive loss of freedom and the end of their way of life. They spent so much time lamenting about the end of the era. How did you miss this?

They didn't hate the law because of "their belief" in freedom. The same way modern Black folk don't hate the law because of that. They hate the law because they want to kill, rob, and rape.

It's part of what makes this game interesting as it shows the perspective of criminals. They don't believe themselves to be evil and each has their own philosophy on why their actions are justified. In the case of cowboys and pirates it was freedom. With cowboys specifically, they attached it to the American Dream in that the country promised freedom but now wants to lay down the law and tell people how to live which despised. Dutch would always go on philosophical rants with the gang and that one cop they kept running into.

The game beats you over the head with it, I simply didn't buy it.
It was obviously made by soi slurping Torontonians (or worse) who despise the West. The protagonist sounds like he's mocking Clint Eastwood with every line. It is insufferable.

Are you serious? Are you saying everyone likes the game ironically then? People didn't actually like the main character or the gang but were all in on the joke and mockery? I don't think so. Most people genuinely liked all the characters, and despite us hating them killing and stealing, felt sorry for their fate. Did we play the same game? Not sure what's wrong with Cinemaphile today.

I'm not even convinced that people liked it as much as the marketing campaign implied. It is the 66th most played game on Steam right now, which for the greatest game ever made is pretty bad after only 3 years.

You said the American Dream but you're talking about outlaws in the western territories in the 19th century, and speaking as if it were ever legal to begin with until the turn of the century rather than it being a case of opportunists taking advantage of a lack of infrastructure to enforce laws in the newly developing territories.
Your definition of "The American Dream" still exists in parts of Africa.

                >still exists in parts of Africa
Didn't Dutch say something to this effect when they ended up in South America? Referring to South America I mean. I'm literally explaining the story to you because you all seem so confused. The viewer sees it as a warping of what we would consider freedom. As in, we don't believe you're free to rob and murder. Yet you can't deny the fact that these criminals claimed that they were justified in doing what they did because "America believes in freedom." This was literally the plot of the game. You response is literally what the police what say to Dutch when he would try to explain his perspective to them.

                That's not "freedom"

Subverting expectations is almost always a good thing. Who wants to watch a movie where everything goes perfectly according to plan and there are no surprises whatsoever? Just because a Star Wars movie did it wrong once doesn't invalidate it as a storytelling technique.

          Anonymous

Subverting expectations in a video game is an entire different kettle of fish, RDR2 subverted the Rockstar Games trope of building up your character and getting richer as you progress by turning that on its head. It's certainly interesting and different, but it gimped the gameplay having your character get sicker as you neared the end of the game. And then the shift to the first games character felt like a completely different experience, not bad, just kind of jarring.

No, just more random things to do. It feels like the world is pretty much empty. There are those occasional random encounters and the cards games, but outside of that and the main story, there really isn't much to do

I've started this game not too long ago (about 25% done with the story), and I've got a question for anons who have already played it. When does the game get fun? Yes it's a very beautiful looking game with lots of cool details, and an interesting story, but when does the gameplay actually become fun? All the game consists of is riding across empty, beautiful landscapes, shooting a couple people and repeating. That doesn't make a fun game imo

      Anonymous

That's the most common criticism, and if you don't enjoy it yet, the game probably isn't for you. It's definitely a very "on the rails" kind of game.

Yes. I don't have as much time to play games as I used to, so I want more out of my gameplay than just "ride 10 minutes across the map, shoot ten people, ride 10 minutes back"

It's not the kind of game you play through in a weekend. I play it sporadically and after a few months of playing I'm like 200 hours in and 60-something% through the story. I mostly do side missions, explore, do hunting and gathering stuff for camp upgrades, etc. There's a lot of random encounters in the game and hidden secrets to stumble on. Mini-games like poker and dominoes.

            Anonymous

The random encounters you get on the trail are always fun, especially factions like the Night Folk, the issue is the way the in-game economy works. You get all the money you could need from doing missions and looting bodies, and the returns from hunting/minigames don't yield high enough returns to make them worth the effort.

              > the returns from hunting/minigames don't yield high enough returns to make them worth the effort.
They aren't strictly for profit, they're supposed to be fun in their own right. It's fun to get a perfect cougar pelt and turn it in to a trapper to get a new herb pouch or donate it to the camp to get a new amenity

I'll get the Legendary creatures, get a few perfect pelts for the upgrades/outfits I want, but then grow bored with hunting pretty soon after that, especially since most of the animals will let you walk right up on them.

RDR2 is less of a game and more of an interactive movie, the shitty Rockstar mechanics are there to guide you to have the most kino experience possible. If you can be fully engrossed in movies like Once Upon a Time in the West or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly the entire time then if you take it slow in RDR2 you will have a great time. My issue with RDR2 as a story is that for 100 hours you're Arthur and playing his story, and the ending to his story it just a set up for John's story. I hate it. They should've let Arthur finish his own story and made the John epilogue separate.

It's not boomers. It's women that enjoy it. I literally watched the show for 8 episodes and was so fed up with the obnoxious "Women can do anything" message that I didn't care to finish the last two episodes

Bros should I play this with a controller or kbm? I know it's a shooter but kbm controls seem kinda clunky

kbm has the option to just press shift to gallop full speed and put that on a toggle, also the horses with kbm tend to "dodge" trees automatically, freeaiming with a mouse is way easier than with a controller.

No Rockstar is just a company that occasionally pushes updates to GTA Online now.

Surprised none of you Black folk thrown out The assassination of Jesse James by the cowered Robert Ford.
RDR2 literally copied the movie, hell, the train mission is an exact shot to shot of the iconic train robbery.

Purely for actually watchable Westerns that weren't made in gritty 35mm I recommend True Grit and Hostiles (although the ending to the latter one kinda falls flat the rest is definitely watchable)

    >Unforgiven
Plato in RDR2 is pretty clearly based on the author from Unforgiven. It shares themes of legends just being legends, the end of an era, etc.

Munny is so much more badass than Arthur, though.
    >I'll see you in hell, William Munny

I think Lenny mentions about people calling him a "Black person" during one mission with Arthur, and being mistreated in general... Shame we never get to see it. Instead we're just being told about it despite the fact that Lenny and Charles are treated no different than the rest of the crew when they go out to town or anywhere.

No he says something like "to them I'm just a Black person" referring to the dixie types you were living around at that part of the game.

Cringe. Also most women in outlaw gangs were prostitutes but there’s only two prostitutes in the gang. The only thing it got right is that most of these criminals would have been spics, Black folk, and mulatto mutts led by a white man.

Abigail is canonically a prostitute only because it was written in the first game. The soi writers of the 2nd wouldn't have the balls to write a female character being a fricktoy to the male gang members

From a technical standpoint, it's a marvel. But my god what a SJW shitfest. Why is it that being a murderous, thieving, stealing, cheating bastard is looked as something noble to be portrayed in today's society, but OH NO NOT THE ROICISMO, ANYTHING BUT THAT.

Even fricking Micah can barely be considered anything more than a MIGApede in a fricking Western settings. It drags the whole game down when you have to constantly be barraged with white apologism and self-lashing for some imaginary crimes.
