can you imagine the matrix with a real leading man? his aesthetic was on it more than will smith or alternatives i can think of, but imagine a real actor, sharing real chemistry with Trinity
This is one of those Terminator/Terminator 2, Alien/Aliens types of discussion that will never be resolved. It really just depends on what you prefer. I prefer Dark City's brooding atmosphere over The Matrix' frantic action.
Director's Cut has Connelly singing in a sultry voice where the theatrical version had a woman who sounds nothing like her dub over it and take away all the emotion/sensuality.
DC is inferior >pacing garbage, especially in the first 20 minutes >trying to make these spirals some big clue
The only advantage to DC is there is no dumb narration at the beginning.
Agreed. They're both good, but in very different ways. Why can't we just enjoy them both while shitting on all The Matrix sequels like civilized people?
It's Cinemaphile, there's like a 50% chance that the guy who wrote "Matrix is better than Dark City" doesn't even mean it, he just knows it will get (You)s
(me)
I should have clarified that I still like Dark City, but the third act with the telekinetic fight is just too goofy. Even goofier than Neo doing all the kung fu.
It isn't. It's good in its own way, but Dark City is the more balanced story. The action in The Matrix is a hundred times better than in Dark City, I'll give you that. On that level, they're not even close. That's just about all that The Matrix has on Dark City though outside of a bigger budget and more polished look.
Very different movies with similar premises. I saw both when they came out and loved them but The Matrix really fricking blew me away. There was so much hype around the sequels and I was hoping for an amazing trilogy but we just got troony shit. In hindsight while the Matrix is good it's a pure fluke and the sequels actually make the original worse knowing what the trannies vision for the trilogy actually was. I hate trannies.
You could call it "torch singing" or "crooning". If you like it you'd probably be into old-school stuff like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin (who did a famous version of this song), and various jazz singers though I'm not very familiar with any of these genres tbqhwyf.
You might also enjoy the "dark jazz" or "jazz noir" genre.
Cont.
Actually just remembered that it's based on a Spanish-language song called ¿Quién será?, Dean Martin sang the first English-language version that became famous

Interesting. I will have to look into it. I never would have thought I'd like that sort of music, but I do really like both of Connelly's songs in this.
Jennifer Connelly rocked a sweet ladystache in this movie. You can see it particularly well on the bluray when she's singing here and then later at the police station. Wish more women weren't afraid of natural facial hair.
there are more band members than customers. that cant be good business unless all those Black folk are literal slaves. we never really got dark cities policy on slavery
It's not unusual even for a popular venue to have off nights. Plus it's fake anyway cause the Strangers set everything up every night to run experiments.
The best jazz bar I've ever been in was about the same size, maybe even smaller. A place called the Blue Bar in San Francisco, about 20 years ago. The place was tiny but the jazz was incredible.
Just watched this for the first time recently. The psychic fight at the end does not really hold up and the payoff overall feels rushed. Other than that I liked it.
>the payoff overall feels rushed.
I think the whole movie feels a little rushed. It's like they were trying to squeeze 3 hours of content into an hour and a half. The brooding mystery vibe clashes with the pacing. Probably studio meddling, to be honest.
Once you're done fighting over Matrix/Dark City, watch picrel. Then read the book it's based on, Simulacron-3, since it's got very little to do with it, actually.
Then, when you're ready, watch an actual good adaptation of the book: World on a Wire. 3h20 of 16mm goodness. Zoomers need not apply.
>World on a Wire
thanks anon. I was one of the 10 people who saw that movie in theaters back in the 90's. I'll check out the book and german serial (if I can find subs).
yeah, it's fricked throughout the film. More experiments on the character. Keifer didn't want to be too unrecognizable so they probably went with the eyes and the ear.
It's hard for any movie discussion thread to compete against the waves of coomer threads, threads arguing about Twitter posts, and capeshit squabbles. Especially when it's not a thread about one of the small number of movies that basically everyone has seen like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, etc
It always seemed to me that Dark City would've been better as a comic book. Could have fleshed out some of the characters more, the effects wouldn't have been as silly looking, etc.
I love the atmosphere and world that this movie establishes that I wish it was like 10 hours long, I would enjoy exploring this world for much longer before the denouement. A good video game set in this world could be kino.
Hey anon, do you know the way to Shell Beach?
god I'm knackered, might have a doze
Matrix is better than Dark City
dark city has jcon in it
REKT
you should watch Inventing the Abbots for upskirt and jcon breasts.
Sewell is a much better actor and leading man than Reeves.
can you imagine the matrix with a real leading man? his aesthetic was on it more than will smith or alternatives i can think of, but imagine a real actor, sharing real chemistry with Trinity
>they hated Jesus because he told them the truth
only because of Yuen Woo Ping

Dark City vs Dark City Director's Cut
Which is best, and why is it the DC?
Director's Cut has Connelly singing in a sultry voice where the theatrical version had a woman who sounds nothing like her dub over it and take away all the emotion/sensuality.
DC is inferior

I like dark city for the noir feeling it has
Me too
hmmmmmmmm
>one way to dilate trump
what did the aliums mean by this?
Should have been Dialatte.
Dark City is an actual garbage film what the frick are you talking about
get out
Bruh, I can understand not liking Dark City but if you think it's a garbage movie you should explain why
Call me bruh again and I’ll knock you the frick out
Wrong

Soul less versus soul. Seek Shell Beach not Blacks and bald kids with spoons.
Dark City also better than Inception

Dark City is my personal favorite but they're both good for different reasons even if they are similar on the surface.
Very different movies with similar premises. I saw both when they came out and loved them but The Matrix really fricking blew me away. What kind of music is this? It's actually quite good.
You could call it "torch singing" or "crooning". If you like it you'd probably be into old-school stuff like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin (who did a famous version of this song), and various jazz singers though I'm not very familiar with any of these genres tbqhwyf.

I think this scene gave me a thing for mysterious film noir type women a while before I had actually seen any classic film noirs
Jennifer Connelly rocked a sweet ladystache in this movie. You can see it particularly well on the bluray when she's singing here and then later at the police station. Wish more women weren't afraid of natural facial hair.
It's a turnoff but, eh, still would. Probably wouldn't even notice it if prime Jennifer Connelly wanted to frick me.
there are more band members than customers. that cant be good business unless all those Black folk are literal slaves. we never really got dark cities policy on slavery
It's not unusual even for a popular venue to have off nights. Plus it's fake anyway cause the Strangers set everything up every night to run experiments.
its a pretty small bar though. only looks like they have 4 tables, 6 max.
The best jazz bar I've ever been in was about the same size, maybe even smaller. A place called the Blue Bar in San Francisco, about 20 years ago. The place was tiny but the jazz was incredible.
jazz is gay a shit
So were like humans imprisioned in a floating city for the rest of their lives??
Just watched this for the first time recently. The psychic fight at the end does not really hold up and the payoff overall feels rushed. Other than that I liked it.
You are objectively correct, but the setup ("to give you a lifetime of knowledge in a a single syringe") still gives me chills.
>the payoff overall feels rushed.
I think the whole movie feels a little rushed. It's like they were trying to squeeze 3 hours of content into an hour and a half. The brooding mystery vibe clashes with the pacing. Probably studio meddling, to be honest.
way better than the matrix in every way
it was a good movie but whenever i watch it i have this feeling it could have been done much better like it didn't live to its full potential

Remember when Craig Bierko was a thing? Nope, me neither.
Yeah he wasn't really leading man material. Great performance by D'Onofrio, however.
>Gretchen Mol
Now SHE was a thing. We need Harvey back.
>World on a Wire
thanks anon. I was one of the 10 people who saw that movie in theaters back in the 90's. I'll check out the book and german serial (if I can find subs).
Dark city is my third favorite movie of all time
kino hair
What's up with that ear? Looks like he went for that Easter Island look and then gave up.
his eyes are fricked up like that through the movie - they did experiments on him even though he was a turncoat against the humans....
The fate of all collaborators. I asked about the ear though...
yeah, it's fricked throughout the film. More experiments on the character. Keifer didn't want to be too unrecognizable so they probably went with the eyes and the ear.
Used to be a matrix fan here that'd get bent out of shape when anyone'd post these and point out dark city came out the year prior
They used the same roof-set, big deal.
This is more compelling.
those aren't tvs behind john murdoch, they're little food-o-mat doors.
I don't remember honestly. I should re-watch this kino.
I love when these turn up, when was the last time? The Machinist, maybe
there was a resurgence in interest during covid, but it's kinda died down.
Matrix had a better gesamtkunstwerk
As a fellow logophile thank you for a new term.
>page 10
Dark City bros...

As soon as AI is capable of it, I will remake the Matrix with Rufus Sewell as Neo and Jennifer Connelly as Trinity. It shall be glorious.
>prime jcon in skin-tight leather and pvc
Anon I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
I watched this just the other day, stop spying on me.
It always seemed to me that Dark City would've been better as a comic book. Could have fleshed out some of the characters more, the effects wouldn't have been as silly looking, etc.
I can see that. This comic had that feel. Also there's some concept art for Dark City that's very surreal and stylized.

Let's do the Time Warp tonight!
I can't take this movie seriously whenever this brat is on screen.
Who is the Kiefer Sutherland character supposed to represent? Mentor? Father?
Collaborator. Saboteur.
Morpheus.
Stainless Steel Rat
>there is a slim possiblity your life is just a fake Alien simulation and you will be reset soon
Watching this right now because of this thread and I just wanted to point out that the prostitute has incredible breasts.
Melissa George was just about perfect in the early 00'
I love the atmosphere and world that this movie establishes that I wish it was like 10 hours long, I would enjoy exploring this world for much longer before the denouement. A good video game set in this world could be kino.
