The Muppets are has-beens with a great show and a few good films but nothing else after, they can't work in the modern day

      >But then proceeds to bleed money later down the line
Damn. Look at all these failures that is in no way Disney's fault.

So Disney has somehow become the embodiment of Uwe Boll? No matter how much their movies suck, they ALWAYS get their money back?

Kind of. For a good long while they were able to survive off of pure nostalgia and good PR but the past several years has shown their chickens have come to roost. They've had a lot of bombs recently and the stuff that did profit hasn't profitted enough since current post captilast hellscape dictated by the stock market and investors it's not enough to make back money but do so through constant unfeasable growth.

For a while that was true. But recently they've been bleeding out.

The Star Wars brand has been trash for years and can't move any merch. Marvels isn't that far behind now.

When that Muppet office sitcom came out and got cancelled I read someone write that the Muppets are a thing everyone says they love except when it comes to actually supporting it, or they say the new thing isn't that good and hold out hope the next thing will be better. And that cycle's continued for years on, even before the Disney sale. The 2011 movie seemed successful and that's the last notable success they seem to have had.

The Muppets never recovered from Jim's death and never will.

You can also blame his kids for that as well. When Kermits VA, who worked with Jim for years, told them they were taking the company in the opposite direction Jim wanted, they fired him. They then tried to shift to "adult" genres and look what happened there. Seriously, has Melissa McCarthy been in an actual GOOD movie, ever?

I don't think adult muppets is inherently bad, and lets face it, the market for Muppets outside of sesame street is aging pop culture junkies. But the adult aspect should come more from the writing being up a notch and maybe playing topics for humor you couldn't otherwise, but the writing has to be smart and not just playing on the tonal dissonance of these characters saying "sex" or cursing.
Meet the Feebles is a muppet pastiche going for shock value, but I'd say there's still heart in it. The official adult muppet movies are just muppets THAT SAY FRICK.

This. In my opinion, the original movie trilogy (+ Christmas Carol) were adult enough. The brand didn't start to kidify itself until Treasure Island. Oh, would you look at that, that coincides with Henson's death.
          It's like

The Muppets never recovered from Jim's death and never will.

said, the Muppets' heart and soul died with Jim. He was one of the only players trying to prove that puppets can be for mature audiences when the entire world kept telling him they were kiddieshit. And now that he's gone, that's exactly what everyone has made them out to be. For kids. And nothing else. Every attempt to make them for mature audiences has been met with failure because they don't have a fricking clue on how to do it properly. It requires nuance, good writing, and sincerity, none of which modern Muppet writers have.

Anon what are you talking about Jim died well before Christmas Carol in fact that was their test to see if they could make a movie without Jim

Same here, I'm 18 and I love the Muppets. They're timeless characters that appeal to both adults and kids. What Disney is doing to the brand is a travesty, but the classic Muppets stuff is great.

Yeah. Honestly as long as they keep preserving the classic stuff I'd rather watch those in perpetuity than watch soulless imitations. I haven't even seen every episode of The Muppet Show so I'm sure there are countless gems I've missed out on.

When that Muppet office sitcom came out and got cancelled I read someone write that the Muppets are a thing everyone says they love except when it comes to actually supporting it, or they say the new thing isn't that good and hold out hope the next thing will be better. It's easier for normalgays to enjoy Kermit and co. when they're making a guest appearance at the Game Awards or on a local talk show

The original Muppet Show pilot was called The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence. Jim Henson always wanted to aim the Muppets at a primarily adult audience, he didn't want to get stuck making kid-friendly stuff after Sesame Street.
Recent efforts have failed not because they were aimed at adults but because they failed to capture the impish, creative energy that Jim Henson had. And they could - there's plenty of the original people involved in The Muppet Show still around, Disney just isn't interested.

They say that like there was actual progress being made on that series, when it just died at the pitch stage because Gad didn't know Disney doesn't own Muppets Take Manhattan.

Dumb. Better produce Secret Invasion season 2 for the cost of 10 seasons of Muppet Mayhem! That will get the fans!
