I'm not saying it's not bullshit, but it might not be; it's one creative exercising his freedom and running up against a subordinate, who also has the right to push back as well, but he can't be too disruptive to the project.
An exec doing it has a lot more power, has no concept of the artistic side of things, and his decisions will be shit and can even override the top creatives like the producers.
So honestly, I want to side with the producer, if his motives were good. If his motives were not, if they were like this

It was brilliant. If DC said no, he'd become Parasite II Alexander Allston. But DC gave the go ahead so he goes from Alex to Lex Luthor. No matter what, this character was coming back and it would be established he is cunning and gifted with technology.
Yeah it's clever, he is based on Lex Luthor but is not 100% identical so you can develop him into a different character or classic Lex with just a bit of character growth

There's at least one reson for any side to not like it. Fujos don't like the straight romance, e-girlkons don't like the black washed Jimmy, hets don't like how soi bara Clark looks, old heads don't like how Lois is a Korean that looks latina.
It just becomes very easy to ignore as a fandom goer. If you wanna draw Lois you could just draw Luz Noceda and get more engagement
