I work for a big Hollywood director/producer as an VFX artist, and he came in making a reference to Chinatown that I didn't get. He told me I should have already seen it, what am I even doing if I want to make movies one day and I haven't even seen the movie that made Jack Nicholson famous? What can I do to recover from this? What movies do I even start with? Just watch all of the big classics from big directors? Isn't that way too much?

Forget it OP. It's Cinemaphile
I know deep down you're right but at the same time I do kind of like to know everything. It hurt my autist pride.
That was the one
Being a film guy and not knowing Chinatown is pretty crazy. Watch 5 easy pieces too
ok, I will
That attitude will take you far
Actual first post best post spotted in the wild.
Dont be weak and start molding yourself cause some Black person spewed boomer takes at you. If you dont care to see them dont bother and dont let a b***h decide how you feel. He probably forget that interaction even happened
Forget it Jake
>what am I even doing if I want to make movies one day
why does he think this? lmfao, just tell him you dont, that you're a vfx artist and that he should frick off with his 'im a director everyone should be a director' bullshit
I think he views me as an apprentice of sorts. He's been teaching me everything, and my coworker.
he's your boss, don't let him be condescending to you or it will never stop
tell him he's defending a rapist and threaten to revive the metoo movement on his ass
Who do you work for?
Obviously I can't tell you. He's famous enough that you have probably heard of him, though.
He's pretty easy going and was probably just ribbing mostly, but it sucks because I do have cinematic knowledge just not that
what was the reference to Chinatown that you missed?
literally these
it's been parodied a million times at this point. you should've absorbed it through osmosis
Chinatown is completely irrelevant to todays movies that get greenlight
unless you go indie
Just pay for a sub to The Criterion Collection streaming service and start working your way through it
He's right. You're in an industry where you need to be cultured and he's pointing out you're uncultured swine. Yes, you should watch the classics and fully understand them, read books on the history of cinema, etc.
I mean, Chinatown is kino, you should see it.
>the movie that made Jack Nicholson famous
That was Easy Rider. He’s a moron
tell him you don't watch movies made by pedophiles.
Chinatown is on my recommended list. Still haven't seen it though. It's not the top tier of my recc list though. I do wanna watch all the Nicholson kinos at some point though
Polanski and Jack Nicholson's best film
