After Beast Wars, Mainframe made the absolutely excellent Shadow Raiders then went on to make that one Barbie movie with the Ice Spice dancing dogs before fricking over ReBoot with The Guardian Code.
Well, considering Shadow Raiders lasted for less than a year, that’s to be expected.
Now, as for ReBoot, I don’t get why Enzo and AndrAIa grew up while game-hopping. Because you’re taking the game out and moving it around and stuff, wouldn’t it have made more sense for Enzo and AndrAIa to have remained young while the others in Mainframe grew older, since the two are essentially stuck in video limbo?
The short answer is "it's a kids cartoon show don't think about it that hard" but the only actual answer that makes sense is that time outside the game is greatly decelerated to align with the temporal frame of the user, which means anyone inside the game experiences accelerated time relative to the system. It's the only way to combine "system time is accelerated compared to real time ex. a second is a day," "people in the system can act in real time while the game is in progress," and "a game doesn't take the equivalent of years to finish from the perspective of the system."
>Shadow Raiders and MTV Spiderman are their last actual shows >from that point on they became the barbie and hot wheel DTV studio >ReBoot fans demand a continuation from them for years, inevitably every attempt is delayed or dies on the vine >ffw a few years and the studio gets bought out by warner >their last major release is a dog shit terrible power rangers esc live action cgi hybrid """sequel""" to ReBoot >they then frick off into the abyss forever having been absorbed into the dying cancer that warner has become

I will defend beast machines to my dying breath. It was a satisfying conclusion to beast wars. I've never seen any other series embrace such goofy subject matter on such a serious spiritual level and it still blows my socks off even now. that said I agree with your point on beast wars. its depressing how we'll never get another happy accident like it. there's just far too many checks and balances in place to prevent any kind of creative spontinaity from occuring these days. thats why modern shit feels so fricking lifeless and terrible. its all operating off a list of preapproved subject matters and tropes.
ABC or wtv fricking hated it but YTV went sure people love the show. YTV in the 90's was fricking awesome. They wanted kids tweens teens young adults all watching the channels its why after 10 anime started airing like good anime this was before [AS] too. YTV in the 90 and very early 00's was peak 90's culture.
Im sure it's been asked but why does a game damage the computer? Is that a consequence of bad programming on the games part, and do future games fix that?
I don't think there's a real rational answer to this since it's just a story contrivance to create a very real sense of danger in what is otherwise a purely virtual scenario, but if I had to no-prize it I'd say that this represents the game occupying blocks of active memory while it's being played. When the game ends, those blocks are cleared (don't ask me why they're not cleared if the game ends by the user losing, this show doesn't work on real-world logic). They can of course be repopulated with new data after being cleared, but due to the timeframe inside the computer being so out of sync with the real world it stays as a "destroyed" block for a while.
KINOMATION I FRICKING LOVE THIS SCENE KINOKINOKINO god damn amazing end to the series just fricking simply kino and megabytes VA makes it even better. I remember watching this as 10/11 and being blown the frick away. Only anime had such bad ass scenes. To think if America kept on ruining reboot we wouldn't have gotten this. What happened to mainframe was a fricking crime. Such a great arc.
If you take the concepts of the best paintings in the world but forced the artists to use dollar store wax crayons instead of paint, and toilet paper instead of canvas... you would still have a great concept and inspiring work, even if the quality of the materials are garbage.
Meanwhile if you hand an actual child the best, most expensive paints and canvas in the world, you will get a stick figure drawing that only makes you regret how much money you spent on the materials.
My favourite is how the earring shakes with every step haha
That said one of my favourite Matrix scenes will always be this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PSEJTtWADM
if more shows did what Reboot did and were able to go from silly to serious, I'd complain less about modern cartoons getting serialized.
In the modern age, many writers are too afraid to commit to anything serious. What if they'll get made fun of on twitter??? Better make sure it's pure laconic self-referential subverting expectations, rather than dare ever play anything straight. This video gets it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOj2hVjwrUo
what saddens me more so is how low everyone's standards have fallen. Take the boys and invincible into consideration. They're both hyperviolent and gorey deconstructions of capeshit with evil supermen. And thats enough for modern audiences. All the quiet build up, all the bombast of classic villainy, a good intro tune, etc pissed away in favor of faux-anime hyper violence and some guy in a leotard saying the frick word. both extremes of the spectrum have suffered immense losses, and as time goes on it seems like we'll never return to those happy hills of yesteryear. we've taken the greatest loss and there's no coming back from it.
I don't think so anon. Every show trying to be like this will wear down most fans eventually. There's a reason some filmbuffs were insanely hype for RRR, because it is so different from Hollywood drivel. We're likely to see similar storise emerge in animation, although maybe that'll come more from an indie direction.
I had a recent revelation that Enzo's arc in Reboot left such an impression on me as a child, that elements of it find their way into every story I write.
I aspire to one day create something that has that impact on someone else, you know?
>I had a recent revelation that Enzo's arc in Reboot left such an impression on me as a child, that elements of it find their way into every story I write
this would be a good topic for a seperate thread. im still discovering the bits of media that had the same impacts on me as a youth. its been a wild ride figuring it all out upto this point.
I loved the transition. He didn't just watch Bob "die" and then became a vigilante. He went through the loss of Bob, then he found himself at the role of Guardian like he wanted in better times, realized it isn't as fun as he thought, accepted it anyway, grew as a character, and then he failed.
Matrix came to be through reality checks and growth as well as traumas.
I miss that 90s cg. It had a charm all its own. ReBoot looked like something that could be going on inside my computer. My only gripe is the timescale.
>make a few season 3 episodes plot references to other pop culture media >Seven Samurai, superhero comics, Star Trek, westerns, pretty standard >oh and also a cult psychological Cold War mindfrick thriller that nobody outside of the UK ever heard of
It was ballsy because they actually kept Bob out of the majority of the third season after this. Most shows would've had the main character missing for the first half of the season at most. Enzo finally had a few nut drop moments at the end of the season 2 but making him the main character when he was mostly "the annoying side kick" is a huge gamble that paid off.
>Any good physical format to watch the series?
The shout dvds are shit, the adv dvds for season 3 are better but are old and have lots of compression. the dvd for season 4 from anchor bay has a low pitch issue but looks better than the shout dvd
>show gets so fricking good >fricking impossible to recommend even to cartoon enthusiast friends because the cgi is so dated (I think it fits the show's setting perfectly) and the first season is so episodic (even though all these frickers creamed over steven universe doing the same shit) >just want to watch it with someone the whole way through until the mortal kombat episode to see their face when shit gets ultra real
Right? but I swear if its not pixar so many "animation fans" will just not acknowledge any cool cgi stuff.
Personally wish they would've gone for an artstyle closer to the earlier pilots, where it was even more primitive shape meshes, faces were flat shapes on spheres (or even earlier when BoB didn't have a mouth) and the premise was just a bit easier to digest in presentation. I think it would've gone a long way towards making the show a bit more futureproof, but I understand why they felt the need to be ambitious. The stuff in the artbook is really fantastic
Skipping ReBoot is the animated equivalent of a so-called film buff skipping Citizen Kane. It pioneered so much that even if it is dated, it deserves to be respected and viewed at least once if nothing else than to appreciate how far we've come.
i relate with your plight on every level brother. i remember arguing with friends in high school about the quality of beast wars despite its visuals and was repeatedly shot down. people these days have no tolerance for cgi that doesnt look like triple A vidya or pixar shit. its really fricking sad considering how much actual kino is out there. >normies will never know the greatness of ratboy genius, reboot, shadow raiders, etc
>Ratboy Genius
It requires a triple-digit IQ to look past the CGI and appreciate the musical mastery that emanates from those videos. Ratchad Geniuses rise up!
picrel: Low-IQ normie who doesn’t understand Ratboy Genius
I fricking love Reboot.
I still have the action figure of Dot I had as a kid.
Its my favourite piece of media period and the reason I was inspired to go into animation.
I love my job, and in a weird off chance ended up doing some work on one of the Skipper movies that Mainframe produced.
Life is a strange circle.
I didn't follow this regularly since I just caught it in syndication, but I saw the season ender where he gets blinded (playing as CPU Scorpion) and new season opener back to back, so the blinding, age up and time skip blew my mind
Someone on youtube upscaled all of ReBoot, Beast Wars, and Shadow Raiders to 4K. That's the best you're going to get, since the shows themselves were rendered at their original broadcast resolutions.
>Someone on youtube upscaled all of ReBoot, Beast Wars, and Shadow Raiders to 4K.
Yeah no. Kudos to them for doing it, but they did an amateur job at it and it doesn't look as great as all the comments say. also for reboot used the shout dvds which still look as shitty as they do in the sd format.
>That's the best you're going to get, since the shows themselves were rendered at their original broadcast resolutions.
disagree. the dvds for reboot were garbage and all the other shows have old dvd releases. bluray looks better for even standard def content
Which, btw, means that the explanation of gametime being faster than their "regular" time is actually backwards to how it should actually be. Gametime should be SLOWER than their normal time, so the User would be able to react to their movements.
Yeah the games should've caused some serious time dilation. Depending on how long the game lasts, they could be in there for hours. Generations would've gone by back in mainframe.
The only logical way to explain it could be that the system "freezes" while the game is taking place but we've seen many times this isn't true.
She doesn't predate the anime halo crown cliche, does she? I'm trying to think of an anime prior to 2001 that had it, but I am drawing a blank. Maybe NGE?
>old rainmaker
you mean mainframe. rainmaker bought them out in like 2006. they had nothing to do with what came before that, and only the crap that came afterwards
>i need more of that kino
unless the people who worked there before came back and had a decent amount of control, it'll never happen. as they are now, they make really childish stuff with a very bland and unimaginative style
Im all too aware of that fact anon. thats why the last decade has felt so particularly dreadful. it really feels like Ive watched action cartoons as a genre die out. that last batch of solid CN action series, everything from secret saturdays up until ben 10 omniverse was effectively the death of the genre. TMNT 2012 was its death rattle. since then its just been buried and Ive been watching buzzards ruthlessly pick at its corpse
Yeah I agree. I was watching JL and I get sad at the end of each episode because there's nothing like it on these days. All good writing, solid plots, character development... it's all gone. All there is today are cartoons with 11 min of mindless garbage trying to keep kid's attentions focused on them for at least 5min before they get sucked back into tiktok.

Technically part of the bios would still be alive due to the battery. But that shit does die or worse pop corrosive acid everywhere.
They would be frozen knowing nothing other than the dude keeping the bios clock alive forever alone. Like that dude in chrono trigger.
That sounds horrible. Then if that battery runs dry, they're just blinked out of existence - worst, the battery explodes, and when it if someone attempts to fix them, they will be forever changed and mutated by the damage to the hardware.

Frick yeah! ReBoot time! Who was the best character in the show and why was it Enzo Matrix?
He's the Damien Wayne of Mainframe. He should have gotten a Jon Kent
It really does suck that there was no other child sprites until AndrAIa.
most development
I now want to get a watch just to name it Birth Defect.
It was AndrAIa
Bruh.
>1560x1170
Huge but looks like shit
The Matrix vs. Megabyte fight is the definition of KINO.
Matrix had the character arc everyone thought Gohan had in Dragon Ball Z.
Future Gohan
KINOMATION I FRICKING LOVE THIS SCENE KINOKINOKINO god damn amazing end to the series just fricking simply kino and megabytes VA makes it even better. I remember watching this as 10/11 and being blown the frick away. Only anime had such bad ass scenes. To think if America kept on ruining reboot we wouldn't have gotten this. What happened to mainframe was a fricking crime. Such a great arc.
God, how can something be so shitty and so awesome at the same time?
I don't think so anon. Every show trying to be like this will wear down most fans eventually. There's a reason some filmbuffs were insanely hype for RRR, because it is so different from Hollywood drivel. We're likely to see similar storise emerge in animation, although maybe that'll come more from an indie direction.
we know he spent most of his time playing shoot them up games and watching porn.
I had a recent revelation that Enzo's arc in Reboot left such an impression on me as a child, that elements of it find their way into every story I write.
I aspire to one day create something that has that impact on someone else, you know?
Go for it, anon!
if more shows did what Reboot did and were able to go from silly to serious, I'd complain less about modern cartoons getting serialized.
>I had a recent revelation that Enzo's arc in Reboot left such an impression on me as a child, that elements of it find their way into every story I write
this would be a good topic for a seperate thread. im still discovering the bits of media that had the same impacts on me as a youth. its been a wild ride figuring it all out upto this point.
agreed
More shows need to end on a musical.
Punished Enzo is only time the kid character has paid off.
I think Reboot looks a lot more charming than most modern cg shows. See: all the absolutely horrible-looking cg anime from the last few years.
>his cute little fish gf turns into a bombshell after the timeskip
Based renegade
AndrAIa really makes me wish we saw more intelligent game sprites and permutations of them
>make a few season 3 episodes plot references to other pop culture media
>Seven Samurai, superhero comics, Star Trek, westerns, pretty standard
>oh and also a cult psychological Cold War mindfrick thriller that nobody outside of the UK ever heard of
The Prisoner should be mandatory viewing in schools all over the world
only episodes 1 and 2 the rest suck
>Missing an eye
You could say he's an INVALID
A damn shame we will probably never get a good release of ReBoot or any mainframe show and we'll be forever stuck with the shout dvds.
>all main characters had their own op introduction
absolute peak
I'm waiting for anon to upload the webm with the death scene.
This scene is kino too, when you knew things were getting serious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA6b2gU0Bb8
>Any good physical format to watch the series?
The shout dvds are shit, the adv dvds for season 3 are better but are old and have lots of compression. the dvd for season 4 from anchor bay has a low pitch issue but looks better than the shout dvd
>show gets so fricking good
>fricking impossible to recommend even to cartoon enthusiast friends because the cgi is so dated (I think it fits the show's setting perfectly) and the first season is so episodic (even though all these frickers creamed over steven universe doing the same shit)
>just want to watch it with someone the whole way through until the mortal kombat episode to see their face when shit gets ultra real
Real cartoon enthusiasts should love to watch the 1st CGI television series. It's a historic landmark in animated television.
Right? but I swear if its not pixar so many "animation fans" will just not acknowledge any cool cgi stuff.
Ratchad Geniuses rise up!
picrel: Low-IQ normie who doesn’t understand Ratboy Genius
>matrix fricking caves in megabtye's chest
that got me really hyped as a kid. like wait a minute, thats a real fricking hit.
>mfw an actual child dies in a children's show
>Mfw when a kid loses his eye in a children's show.
>OG AndrAIa never left the game. Only her copy is having the best life with Enzo
Bignomes=Modrons
debate me.
>REBOOT WILL RETURN AFTER THESE MESSAGES
>WE NOW RETURN TO REBOOT
Does anyone have anything else pertaining to the Trias Effect?
>we'll never actually get a conclusion to The Hunt
There is no such thing as ReBoot season 4 and there is no gosh darn reason to buy anything claiming to be from the internet. It’s a scam!
>THIS b***h STARTED MY FETISH FOR EVIL WOMEN.
GODDAMIT.
>EVIL
she was bipolar
We call that women.
My mom, who watched ReBoot when it was first being syndicated, likes to call her the evil spider lady.
>Cant show dot kissing her brother on the cheek
>The tall insane dominatrix in a corset is okay
i don't think the BSNP even realized that
Even as a kid I thought her changing masks gimmick was super cool.
That wasn't a change in seasons. The timeskip happens between episodes 4 and 5 of season 3.
Thanks, just janky memory
I'd love a bluray of shadow raiders. the pic mainframe posted looks really good for its time
Someone on youtube upscaled all of ReBoot, Beast Wars, and Shadow Raiders to 4K.
Yknow, the entirety of reboot could be taking place over the course of ten or twenty minutes in real life.
What was her problem?
She doesn't predate the anime halo crown cliche, does she? I'm trying to think of an anime prior to 2001 that had it, but I am drawing a blank. Maybe NGE?
Thottery. She wanted everyone to worship her.
She was French-Canadian
i am commit mass-murder suicide for she
>delusional virgin
does anyone else consider Reboot and Tron Uprising good companion pieces to each other? I feel like they both share alot in common.
i really miss the standard of writing alot of those old rainmaker cgi action shows had. the quality their shows writing had was fricking astounding
>old rainmaker
you mean mainframe. rainmaker bought them out in like 2006. they had nothing to do with what came before that, and only the crap that came afterwards
my bad, its been a while since ive discussed this to any extent. the point remains, i need more of that kino
>i need more of that kino
unless the people who worked there before came back and had a decent amount of control, it'll never happen. as they are now, they make really childish stuff with a very bland and unimaginative style
All there is today are cartoons with 11 min of mindless garbage trying to keep kid's attentions focused on them for at least 5min before they get sucked back into tiktok.
what saddens me more so is how low everyone's standards have fallen. Take the boys and invincible into consideration. They're both hyperviolent and gorey deconstructions of capeshit with evil supermen. And thats enough for modern audiences. All the quiet build up, all the bombast of classic villainy, a good intro tune, etc pissed away in favor of faux-anime hyper violence and some guy in a leotard saying the frick word. both extremes of the spectrum have suffered immense losses, and as time goes on it seems like we'll never return to those happy hills of yesteryear. we've taken the greatest loss and there's no coming back from it.
>modern audiences
That's the problem. Just about everything is geared towards idiots who don't care about plot or character development, only how much crazy over the top action shit can be packed into something.
Nostalgia
The original Dot Matrix was pretty hot. Well, as hot as a lady can be with an Imodium anti-diarrheal skin tone.
I still find funny that her first season model had a uniboob because ABC thought she looked to sexual
>be user(different user)

>Plugs it up, turns it on, connects it to the net
God, living in a computer must be absolute hell. Would they still be alive? Would they remember the period in which they were dormant? Would they think something happened and that's it? What if a power surge fried some components? God! The horror!
>Would they still be alive?
Technically part of the bios would still be alive due to the battery. But that shit does die or worse pop corrosive acid everywhere.
They would be frozen knowing nothing other than the dude keeping the bios clock alive forever alone. Like that dude in chrono trigger.
That sounds horrible. Then if that battery runs dry, they're just blinked out of existence - worst, the battery explodes, and when it if someone attempts to fix them, they will be forever changed and mutated by the damage to the hardware.
just recently rewatched it, seeing its visual evolution was insane. literally, the moment ABC left, its when it start getting good
Where can I download the complete series bros?
You can watch them here.
I own the box set and the quality on these upscales is honestly better than the DVDs.

Thanks, but Youtube compresses video already.
So like no one brought up post season 3. The movies or wtv "season" 4/5. Artistically they were amazing, the plot wasn't that bad. I mean its hard to live up to the kinomation that was season 3. The ending to reboot was just. It was just frick its funny how we got probably the best character arc of a child to adult. Does this make reboot a coming of age story? Enzo wanting to be some hero guardian like bob. Even tho every guardian we meet is a piece of shit. Being a hero isn't all its cracked up to be, a young teenager fighting in an unwinnable war. Against a monster an all powerful monster who is just toying with you all to make his dick hard. Enter yet another game thinking it'll be the same as always.
LOL WELCOME TO KOMBAT SON, FLAWLESS VICTORY FINISH HIM USER WINS FATALITY
Yay Enzo did it yet again our her

the reason the defenders mostly suck is because defenders are just cops
they don't care about context, they don't even really think about outcome, they're just here to do their job, clock in, clock out, that's it
