My gripes about Superman logo

Can it just be an S. Batman doesn't need a explanation about his bet logo. The fricking green lantern an alien police logo is a green lantern. I don't need this long explanation that Kal El family crest happens to be en English S.

Although I will say Wonder Woman kinda lucks out with her having a w somewhere in her costume.

I guess this is technically getting into the "boys" universe. If someone is a mask vigilante who doesn't want their identity known is there logo just up for grapes and you can make merchandise and not pay the super hero rights?

I see a W, albeit a rounder one. More like UU.

    >not Latin (the actual name of the alphabet English uses)
    Anon, I...
I'm surprised you don't say "an American S", my likely homeschooled Anon. I bet you'd also have a heated argument about quantities with an Arabian and would try to smugly tell him, "Are we using Arabic or English numbers?"

From what I understand it was just an S until Marlon Brando wanted a Superman S on his costume for the movie too and that’s what started it being a House of El crest. If I was able to reboot Superman and do anything I wanted I’d have him start out with the Fleischer S then as he learns of his kryptonian heritage he designs an S that’s a mix of the letter S and Kryptonian glyphs, which would essentially be the modern S. But I’m lazy and will never break into comics so I just share these ideas on Cinemaphile hoping for approval.

You’re a Saint, anon. I’ve been obsessed with Superman since I was about three years old, I refused to wear anything but my Superman pajamas for about a year and a half. Here’s some other ideas for my unrealized dreams
        >the Kents take Clark to a circus when he’s like an early teen. Clark is enamored with the freak show since they’re different like him. He befriends them all and learns from them that just because you’re different doesn’t mean you’re bad.
        >Clark reveals himself to the world in a similar fashion as he did in Byrne’s Man of Steel, deciding to run with the name Lois comes up with, Superman, he makes a costume modeled after the circus strongman’s costume and uses the blanket he was wrapped up in the space ship as a cape
        >is mostly unaware of his kryptonian heritage beyond the ship Ma and Pa found him in until Brainiac invades, he finds the (empty) city of Kandor, after he fights off Brainiac he builds the Fortress of Solitude in the arctic and makes a new costume out of kryptonian materials and alters his S so it’s a combo of the letter S and a Kryptonian glyph

To be honest I wasn't big on Superman as a kid. All the old OG, even the Avengers. I felt like if I met them as a kid they'd tell me to drink milk, go to bed early, and listen to my parents and fly off.

Actually getting into Superman later, I think I appreciate how genuine he is. That unlike The Boys, or Invincible, there isn't an irony to himhe kind of is that true blue boyscout.

Which turning back to what you said, I love the idea of young Clark Kent seeing Circus freaks and being "they're different like me" speaks to the humbleness of Clark.

I like your idea, but ultimately leaves me in the same frustrated place. I'm sick of long complicated reasons for super hero costumes.

If you see a guy in a cape and underwear on the outside, you probably think he's a dork or want to kick his ass. If you see him pick up a car and throw it like it was nothing, every time you see him your going to think "shit that's Superman" or "thank God it's Superman I'm saved"

            >I'm sick of long complicated reasons for super hero costumes
Oh yeah I’m right there with you, but at the same time I’m also an autistic logic freak and Superman’s symbol being a Kryptonian glyph that just happens to resemble an S or why super heroes wear costumes has always made my autistic almonds activate. But I agree 100% that what really matters with Superman is that relief of “oh thank god it’s Superman everything’ll be okay”, like that’s the most important thing

I think it's important for everything a character does in universe to have a character based explanation.
It doesn't need to be complicated but I don't like any story where a character does something just because it's how those stories go. (Unless purposely copying stories is in character for them, like Don Quixote or Señor Senor Senior)

Here’s some of my ideas for my hypothetical “run”
          >golden age period piece
          >starts with a regular S
          >Kara lands and at this point in the story Lois and Clark have married but have resigned themselves that they can’t have kids (biological incompatibility)
          >they, like the Kents before them have their prayers answered
          >they adopt and raise Kara as their own
          >Clark shows his daughter the human world
          >she shares what she can of home
          >they eventually become a superhero duo, contrasting Batman and Robin
          >Kara, as a birthday present makes a new suit for Clark (with Lois’s help)
          >It bears the Kryptonian equivalent of the letter “S”
          >it’s the KC “S”

There’s some other ideas like Kara growing up and becoming Power Girl, having a son down the line who gets powers more in line with Silver Age Supes, Brainiac being the Roswell alien and Superman achieving nuclear disarmament, ushering in the future that leads to Earth becoming Krypton.

The House of El thing was only introduced in the 70s with Donovan's Superman films but since than it has basically become canon. However as far as Golden age Superman and the older incarnations of the character are concerned Superman's "S" is just an S.

"Smallvile" went with a similar approach where in the symbol of the house of El doesn't look like an S at all but Clark ends up modifying it for his costume later on.

You’re a Saint, anon. I’ve been obsessed with Superman since I was about three years old, I refused to wear anything but my Superman pajamas for about a year and a half. Here’s some other ideas for my unrealized dreams

      >I refused to wear anything but my Superman pajamas for about a year and a half
      Immeasurably based.

      This chart makes no sense.
The “1968” logo (that is, the “official” logo) was designed in the early 80s.
Toth was using the “1942” much later than that.
      I’m sure there’s more.

The 1955 logo is from Reeve movie promotional stuff.
The 1944 one is from the 80s cartoon show.
      lol

I really hate the shields that treat the edges like its part of the S. The worst offender is Batman Beyond Superman. By far the worst official superman shield ever.

I'm guilty of liking that one, but that might be more of Beyond nostalgia.

I 100% agree with you. Going off previously said in this thread. It's kore important superman costume is Red and Blue. Two colors to catch your eye on purpose. That if shits going down, alien invasion, monster of the week, or whatever that you can see Superman and be relieved he's there. Everything going to be okay, even if it isn't.

I do like versions of the logo that play with positive and negative space. I remember one Website based in Kryptonian in fiction showed a lot of glyphs and I think some played in that space.

Making it Kryptonian is a cool story beast that connects Clark to a culture he can never fully experience.
Also it's an excuse to put the logo all over Kryptonian stuff, which I argue looks cool as hell .
