Honestly, I avoided this album for 20 fricking years based solely on its reputation and then when I finally listened to it, I actually thought it was pretty good. To me, an album that has 2 or 3 memorable songs is a good album, and it meets that criteria.
It's only hated because they cut their hair and purist metalheads are fricking homosexuals. It's a great album. Metallica is an amazing band.

It should only have been used sparingly as an effect, like in the intro to St.Anger, but then go back to a regular snare drum when the verse kicks in.
The trash can snare sounds right for the chaos in the intro, but yeah. Should only have been used as an effect here and there.
Even the clown guy in Slipknot knows he should only hit that metal barrel once in a while
