Different anon. Let me posit my opinion: When someone creates art, in this case cartoons, there's a very modern idea that art has an obligation to be "socially responsible." I think that some people feel that art has to positively represent minority groups and women. Therefore, they feel it necessary to focus on or create characters and stories that are positive representations of these groups. I personally do not agree, but it's definitely a belief some people have about these sorts of things.
I further posit that these people feel a desire to self aggrandize their importance and I think some believe that they're going to change society with their art. It's a belief that they're saving the world or changing it and fighting what they view as an injustice.
Once again, I disagree. I don't think art has any such obligation nor do they. But I do believe that's their motivation.
