I assumed he was going to sell ads. His show is on cable, right? I don't think he ever said he was paying the crew himself, it was about putting them to work making something you can monetize with ads.

I meant to imply the argument people have been making is that Maher should pay his team from his personal fortune if he really cared. Which is basically letting the WGA have their cake and eat it too. And why would you want that? The gesture is as much to help the workers as it is to put pressure on the guild to come to the table (it worked if OP is any proof)

Having more writers in the room at once lets you have communication about and cohesion between the plots and characterizations in different episodes of a show. What studios have been doing lately is hiring a few people to work on a script or two essentially on freelance, turn it in, then it gets passed on to a separate couple writers after to get polished up, rinse, repeat. When you get later on in the series nobody has any idea what the frick they should be writing because all they have is a basic outline for how the producers want the season to go with none of the specifics from previous episodes. This might be fine if we were talking about episodes of Cheers 40 years ago, but it creates a huge bottleneck in both quality and ease of output from the studios with today's serialized formatting for everything.

I think you're misunderstanding my post. We have the same number of writers on a season overall, but they're all being hired on at separate times to save money so nobody has any idea what the others are working on at any given time, leading to moronic continuity errors and character growth backtracking. What they're asking for isn't too many cooks, it's for the cooks that are already there to not be blindfolded and gagged while they're working on a dish together.

That shit would make more sense in the era of 25 episode seasons, but you’re doing 10 episode seasons now and if you can’t keep your shit together to write ten hours of content across 5 people then what the frick are you doing being writers? Everyone here understands that Hollywood writers are fine with being propagandists who aren’t interested in making art why can’t they?

                Anonymous

The difference between the ten episode series of today and the twenty five episode series of decades past is the hyperserialization of modern television. This would work fine on a sitcom where the in-show universe resets every episode (a la my Cheers example), but with modern shows being like 10 hour movies the inability to communicate about what happens in the episode previous to yours is a big problem. You can write a script that would be super solid in a vacuum, but how are you supposed to know if your episode 5 contradicts the other guy's episode 3 if you aren't able to communicate while they're being written because you aren't working there at the same time? It literally does not matter how talented you are as a writer at that point, you can't count on continuity and consistency when nobody knows what the hell it is they're continuing. In the past it would have been 5 to 10 people there on a consistent basis, with one doing the heavy lifting on a particular episode while the others would offer input or write specific characters to keep it consistent with the episodes they were the leads on. This is what the writers are trying to get back to, and it's had demonstrably superior results for both the writers and the viewers in the past.

What you’re describing is a show runners job anon, why would you WANT ten people each writing one hour of a movie? How is that quality? In the grand scheme of things Hollywood is tiny as FRICK, like the projected revenue of “gender affirming care” alone DWARFS the entirety of the film industry. So as of this point, media outlets in both the realm of news and entertainment are just bought off from every side. As of this point I see NOTHING of value coming from the film industry from a writing perspective and even less from television, so honestly the best solution for this is to have Hollywood collapse and let other states try to fill that void. It’s not gonna happen sure, but seeing what Stephen Colbert became just makes me want all of modern televisions to just burn and never be remembered again

Tell that to the people running Star Trek right now. Also, they do a lot more than that, primarily sucking the wieners of corporate and the producers for funding.
                >Why would you want ten people each writing one hour
I think you misread that, the idea is you have input from all (or most) of the writers on each script, even if the main idea/assignment came from one person. This gives your series cohesion and lets people correct continuity errors, question whether xyz character would act this way, edit out filler, etc. It's how just about every single show was done before our current streaming era of television where every cost got cut to make up for the money pit that is the modern streaming service.

Writers compensation is still based around how television worked thirty years ago:
            >seasons are produced every year, so being on a show is a guaranteed year of employment, and continuous if it gets renewed
            >seasons are 26 episodes so there needs to be more writers, meaning more opportunities
            >if a show lasts until syndication the residuals from your episodes will make you wealthy

None of this is true anymore. Shows are getting one season of ten episodes and then, if renewed, their second seasons aren't coming out until 2+ years after. And streaming doesn't pay residuals.

          Anonymous

Writers and actors are b***hing about streaming residuals since nobody watches cable anymore. They want a larger share but streaming doesn't make that much money and its the studios only line of defence in our modern world.

Also the studios in the last negotiations promised to "consider" not using AI which caused the WGA to get butthurt. These problems can't simply be negotiated on since the whole outlet is changing

            Anonymous

The studios fricked up bigly here. They told everyone how great streaming was doing. It wasn't doing well at all. Well, now the writers and actors want a piece of that streaming money, but if they open the books to the writers and actors, the investors (who are already suing over it) get to see how they have been lied to about how streaming has really been doing.

I think a big part of this is Disney can't negotiate on this.
Disney is 11 billion in the red on their streaming figures, been lying to investors about outlook and so despite they are starting to piecemeal out their television channel IP to stay afloat to pay for the HULU acquisition who is coming due. Scrutiny and residuals on streaming would cause Disney to go belly up and at the very least force the board to fire all of their leadership if not suffer a hostile take over.

They only have a few hundred million in liquidity RN. If the writers win its possible Disney goes into a deathspiral due to being overleveraged.

They don't have to be full time to have a WGA card, all you need is a stand-up comedian scheduled that worked on SNL for a single season in the 2000s for that interview to be tanked if they're hardline enough about it.

Honestly the ENTIRE problem with Hollywood is how the current generations of writers were trained anon. Maybe getting people who aren’t trained like the whipped dogs they are we’d get some quality entertainment again..

                >The problem with this generation is how they were trained
Yes, because they were trained on the current pod system for writer's rooms. We both want the same end goal here, the only thing you're missing is why they're trained the way they are. This is a direct result of a pants on head moronic workplace structure. Most of the best regarded showrunners and writers of the modern era came up under old school, collaborative writers rooms where they were surrounded with other writers to bounce ideas off of/receive criticism from when they did stupid shit. When it's just you and maybe one other person churning product out and passing it on for a one time check regardless of quality you're never going to learn from your mistakes.

it's basically responding to the same points.

                TL;DR: Quantity over quality
No wonder everyone is tired of your bullshit.

Yes, completely disregard the fact that this is how it worked during what's widely considered the golden age of television. Surely it's mere coincidence that quality took a nosedive once they changed how writers rooms operated. You seem very rational.

So he had one perfect season in him and two not as great ones. I'd rather have one perfect season for a show than the endless slop-by-committee we get now.

                >You need someone with a clear vision
Literally nobody said you didn't, but the history of television and film is littered with examples of shows and movies that were saved by other writers reigning in the lead creative's sillier impulses. Look at the list of writers that worked on shows like The X-Files or The Sopranos, then compare to the dogshit that's being pumped out today. The results speak for themselves.

The writers room weren't inflated just to fill diversity quotas.
