This. Perhaps the best episode. OP this show is really hit or miss. For every good episode, there's 1-2 bad/shitty episodes. Here's a list of the good episodes in my opinion. The ones not listed are ones that suck

      Season 1
      >Beyond the Aquila Rift
      >Zima Blue
      >Suits
      >Blind Spot
      >Good Hunting

Everyone picks Jibaro. It's overrated. The camera is choppy (I get that it's the style of the short) and while it has a nice allegory of colonialism, it's a little too on the nose.

I really liked Zima Blue because it was purely a sci fi philosophical episode without random gore and nudity forced in. That's fine when it's called for but a few episodes felt like they had it just to say the show is NSFW.

The soundtrack and audio from this episode was kino by itself. Also, did his brother pretend to be gimped as a test of his character or did he just have super healing abilities. The ending where he gives him that sly face made me not sure.

        >did his brother pretend to be gimped as a test of his character or did he just have super healing abilities
First, it's made more clear in the short story though. Guy gets pissed about it too.

A whole lot of these make more sense in the original short, Sonnies Edge completely changed the ending and actually became the thing the original short story was taking the piss out of. Some of them got improved though, like Bad Traveling, which originally had a ton of backstory about the alien planet it's on(That's why there's a giant psychic crab) that didn't amount to much and originally they were pirates, so it was kind of a plothole why they suddenly had giant barrels full of oil down there. The show changed them to shark hunters who were specifically after Shark Oil to plug that hole. Weirdly, Netflix "Diversified" the crew, but didn't change the part where they're all buttholes and he takes them out, which was weirdly respectful on their part. Sure, there's more black people and a native american woman and other women on the crew, but the crux of the narrative that they're all absolute shitstains doesn't get changed and as a result I haven't heard complaint one about the burger king kids shark hunters.

This shit was kino as frick. Made me wish I had a brother. Everything about it, feeling ostracized because others are actually better than you, being dragged along on for something dangerous knowing full well that you probably won't be able to handle it, and still trying your best and actually saving your brother and earning the respect of your peers for being able to hang. I watched it thinking it'd be more generic shit but it was great.

I mean a shockingly high number have a random ass downer ending in them even when it's downright nonsensical to put it there. Jibaro literally granted random superpowers to water just to force in a downer ending. Then we've got Kill Team Kill or the like. The problem is there's some absolutely fantastic stories in there, you just have to dig through a lot of slop. All Through The House is one of the most unique stories I've seen in a while. Bad Traveling is dark but ultimately triumphant and it makes all the suffering to get there worth it. Zima Blue completely eschews identity politics in favor of contemplative philosophy and it's better for it.

That said downer endings aren't always bad. Your pic had one and so did Aquila Rift, and those are some top notch shit.

Ok, in Beyond the Aquila Rift, what's to stop any advanced civilization from negotiating with the creature? Also, why is rape ok if the victims are men?

      Anonymous

      >what's to stop any advanced civilization from negotiating with the creature
There's no way back, otherwise she would've just sent them home. The only time anyone ends up there is if they're so damaged and off course there's no hope of repair or salvation, and more often than not dead. You can see it in the hundreds of other ships there, she can't do anything to preserve them for very long and just tries to keep them comfortable for as long as she can because she knows the horror of the hopelessness of their situation and the loss of everyone they know would drive them mad at best and leave them in agony before they expired at worst.

      >Also, why is rape ok if the victims are men?
Because it's all in his head? Imaginary rape is a whole other ballgame, and she's not forcing him. She's in his head trying to give him a good last couple of days before he runs out of food, water or oxygen and expires, because there's nothing else there and there's no way to get him somewhere where it exists.

She's not abducting them and raping them, the ships ending up there is a result of a malfunction in their warp drive that puts them way off course and this is sort of a "Null" area they keep ending up in, and it fricks up their ships so much they could never get home. She's not evil, she just doesn't want to see them suffer in their final hopeless moments.

        Anonymous

        >>what's to stop any advanced civilization from negotiating with the creature
        >There's no way back, otherwise she would've just sent them home.
She's a spider feeding off intergalactic flies. How she got there is how you get out. But she won't allow anyone to figure that out. Her true face is at crotch level, and she keeps him sedated with fake illicit sex so he's worrying more about how to satisfy his dick instead of how to get home. You ever watch the youtube channel adventures with purpose? They were on the news for cracking a decades old cold case in twenty minutes just by being fresh eyes. Hundreds of ships is thousands of minds, the best minds in the galaxy. Somebody can figure something out. Instead of using that neural network of hers to facilitate species communicating with one another to become something greater, she's keeping each of them locked in a self-contained looped happy-pill bath.

        >she knows the horror of the hopelessness of their situation and the loss of everyone they know would drive them mad at best and leave them in agony before they expired at worst.
She's eating them, and even the truth is a lie. She doesn't give them time to process the situation before resetting their minds. She never gives him a real choice. She fricks him to death.
        >She's not evil, she just doesn't want to see them suffer in their final hopeless moments
She's eating him, and probably ate (or is continuing to eat!) his crewmates. If keeping him alive meant a perpetual Backrooms Level ! Loop, she'd do it. She's not evil, no, just like spiders are not evil for cocooning flies. But she's not altruistic, either.

          Anonymous

what would be the point of the spider keeping the people alive so it could eat of them? it's a waste of energy. also there would be no point in the delusions when it clearly has to capacity to telepathically dominate them. She's just a lonely spider and these weird tards keep jump driving into her web so she just does what she can for them until they die.

Also the bit where the warp drive software just has a rounding error or something that sends you to frickswhereville is a hilariously good element

          Anonymous

          >How she got there is how you get out
So just, being there? She doesn't have any form of travel, it's just a big web thing.
          > instead of how to get home
He literally got let out of the mind prison and immediately realized he was beyond fricked by just the fact that his ship was torn beyond repair. What was he going to do, weld the front half back on and find a giant ring they conveniently placed in the middle of nowhere to use to warp out of there? It's not like the ships themselves have warp drives, they go in big timespace folding things.
          >Hundreds of ships is thousands of minds, the best minds in the galaxy.
          And most of them died.
          >Somebody can figure something out
Again, it's not a matter of if they somehow manage to duct tape the ships back together after being torn to shreds, it's that they're literally so far out in space they would never be able to make it home because they don't have the big thing they need to actually get home and by the time the next person comes along the first batch has run out of life support.
          >Instead of using that neural network of hers to facilitate species communicating with one another to become something greater,
There's ONE guy who survived, everyone else died horribly.
          >She's eating him
This makes absolutely no sense in the context of what we saw. Why, the frick, does she need to keep him alive for a little bit if she's eating him? What does she get out of this? Hell, why not just, I dunno, let him out or something and see what happens. What's his decrepit ass gonna do, overpower her? Run off into the void of space? Jump on that ship that's missing half of it and make a go of it? We even see several of his crew and they're not eaten, they're just decayed from having been dead for a while.

There is nothing to indicate she's actually eating them or even wants them there at all, she clearly doesn't need them to survive.

            Anonymous

of using that neural network of hers to facilitate species communicating with one another to become something greater,
            >There's ONE guy who survived, everyone else died horribly.
Also there's not any indication that other aliens are getting caught up in it, it might just be humans who fricked up on this and everyone else got the software patch.

Bigger issue is how no HUMANS figured out where they kept going, you'd think they'd just send a ship with some kind of tracker or something with the same error and figure out where it lands. Then who knows, maybe you could send the parts for a warp jumper so you can actually get someone home if they get stuck there. Spider-Lady would probably appreciate it, she seems to feel bad about this whole thing.

That sounds great but like, where are they getting the stuff for the big ring?

I don't mean the metal, lets assume she has tools or something, but where are they getting the dark matter or whatever that lets the big ring actually do the warp? It clearly isn't on a ship, otherwise they would use it for their warping instead of using the ring, so even if they make a Cargo Colt facimilie they just left the next guys with a big hunk of useless metal because, again even if they had a perfectly functioning space ship with life support and food/water renewal or something they're so far out that it would take literal centuries to make it home and they know it.

Attributing any sort of malevolence or hidden agenda to the spider doesn't really match up with what we've seen, it just looks like some unlucky sobs keep ending up where she lives and she doesn't want to be an butthole and let them suffer.

Everyone who's ever tried to sell me on this show were pseuds, and it appeals to anyone who thinks a half-way dramatic premise about endless suffering or some bullshit trauma is instant kino and then gives it bonus points because of its experimental 3D arthouse shit.

Its ten poles below any half-way decent Twilight Zone or Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt type isolated vignette storytelling show, and yet its celebrated because its edgy adult storytelling for homies who never touched a titty or read a decent graphic novel in their lives.

      >Wasn't it an Alastair Reynolds story? Reynolds is a formidable storyteller.
Yep. But the show changed a bunch of things, like the fact the main character is cheating on his wife with the spider-image and they have a pretty frank discussion about that where she calls him out on being hypocritical about it. Admittedly the short works better without that subplot, it kind of takes away from the core idea of her distracting him from the hopeless reality if she's suddenly reminding him about said reality she wants him to avoid, but everything else including technobabble is on the nose.

yeah our Mr Reynolds has a habit of thinking up too many ideas and splatting them onto the page, even when the narrative doesn't really call for them. The "revelation space" trilogy could have been two books, easily

It's an overall ok series, but it has the weirdest fluctuating quality. Season one is overall mediocre with a couple great ones. Season 2 doesn't have the same lows, nor the same highs as far as I remember. Season 3 seemed to me the one with the best overall consistency, plus the cgi for some episodes is really really impressive.
The problem with shirt stories is that it's easy to set up an original or interesting idea, but with the short time given most directors seems to fail at developing them. An example is the giant episode in 2, great idea completely wasted, what the frick was even the point of that story? No story, no conflict, no interest in even hinting at its origin, nothing to be learnt. Just some guy being gay about a big corpse for ten minutes.
