On another note - The Novice but it's more about obsession and coming of age than rowing as a sport..

They should make more sport movies that take place during the Great Depression. Cinderella Man is kino because it's a man getting a second chance to keep his family from starving. The Legend of Bagger Vance would be just another boring as frick golf movie if it didn't take place during the Great Depression where a golfer becomes the symbol of the nation's lost and renewed hope. Seabiscuit is only magical because of The Great Depression part. Football movies are usually shit but the 12 Mighty Orphans had heart because of, you guessed it, The Great Depression backdrop with its corruption and poverty.
The Great Depression as a setting is an instant 30% modifier (at least) to any sports movie score. Hollywood needs to realise this and produce the GDSCU.
Half of Men without Women is about old sports guys or at least these are the stories I remember. I wonder if there are adaptations of some, never thought of looking.
a league of their own was kind of depression-esque since the economy was boring and all the men were gone in ww2
Yeah while not strictly GD it does have that general feel of adversity and having to get people in the seats. A baseball movie that actually takes place during the great depression, where the families of the whole team rely on the team being successful enough to play in the big league cities where people can afford to go to ball games or something like that would be great. Everyone wearing old as shit gear because they're sending every penny back home and with real animosity against another team filled with kids from rich families that have dodged the depression and treat it like nothing more than a game.
I would make that movie with such vehemence and venom against the current betting culture. Where's our Kennesaw Mountain Landis
3 stooges early football and boxing episodes with Curly are peak. I think in the football one they're begging and stealing on the street at first.
Blades of Glory
Patrician.
Borg v McEnroe
Teen Wolf
WIIIIIIN IN THE END
Zoolander is a better sports movie than Dodgeball. DB has so many anti-jokes and tension breaking moments that remind you it's about having fun, and laughing AT gym trannies not with them. It saps the power of the big cliche ending every step of the way. Zoolander has the loss of his friends, the brutal rivalry with Hansel surpassing anything in DB, and much more dedication to the sport (fantasy male modeling) where zoolander is an elite athlete.
The Day after Tomorrow.
Perfect reflection of what sportsgays think will happen if their team loses.
Brian's Song and Bang the Drum Slowly
Chariots of Fire obviously
