The cartoon wasnt 100% faithful to the comic either with the black Smurfs being recolored at the cartoon adaption.
Indeed, it was surprisingly faithful. The biggest change the cartoon made to the comic was give the Smurfette more agency and make her less vain and annoying, Peyo was quite sexist and made Smurfette the incarnation of all the negative qualities he associated with women.
I actually read the Belgian comics, and if anything the TV show actually made Brainy Smurf slightly smarter. In the original French he was actually called Schtroumpf à Lunettes or "Smurf with Glasses", he wasn't supposed to be smart, he was just a stereotype of the nagging teacher's pet you'd see in school that Peyo clearly loathed.
I've noticed that modern versions like the movies and the recent CGI show actually make him smart, but still annoying.
