The writer. He can't imagine how to make something like Modok serious.

      Anonymous

The movie is afraid that people will laugh at MODOK and think Marvel isn't in on the joke (that MODOK was meant to be taken seriously, but the movie failed it do it). So instead, the film goes out of its way to make it clear to the audience that itknowsMODOK is silly.

        Anonymous

The movie also wanted to portray Kang as the actual serious threat, that's why he constantly bullies MODOK and every scene with him is 100% serious business. The result is a huge tonal whiplash.

You can say various negative things about the DCEU, but one absolutely positive thing they did was portraying Black Manta as a serious threat, and doing his costume nearly 100% comic accurate at that.

Well yeah, but even if it was a previously existing entity, you could have introduced MODOK as having taking over AIM remnants, and have them operating in the shadows. From there, you can have him be a scientist that got mutated into a horrible monster through experimentation, and takes advantage of the absence of Tony to make his move on the world.

Being fair, the OG Darren Cross wasn't someone extremely interesting or entertaining, he was just a weird red hulk that died from a heart attack. Before the rewrites of the first film Darren was going to become a complete OC called the Nano Warrior, a bad guy that shrinks. At some point the decided to reference the comics and just turned him into Yellowjacket.

          Anonymous

Why not name him after someone less obscure or less different?

            Anonymous

As in why use Darren Cross in the first place? Because he is the bad guy of Scott Lang's origin story and that's what Edgar Wright was using as inspiration for the Ant-Man film, I figure he thought that having Ant-Man fight a red man wouldn't be as visually interesting as having him fight someone with similar powers, hence the decision to make him into a shrinking baddie.

And then, he was turned into MODOK because they rewatched his death in the first movie and thought that would be a way to explain how someone could end up disfigured with a big head, they wanted to make a callback to the first Ant-Man and liked the idea of having their own take on MODOK.

              Anonymous

Huh, with that factiod it makes perfect sense. Why didn't they stick with the Nano Warrior name, not thematic enough?

                Anonymous

I guess that's why yeah. In the movie Darren was Hank's protégé so I guess they thought that having him use the name of one of Hank's past personas from the comics would be a cool nod. Besides, having someone else use the Yellowjacket name to be a villain is something that happened in the comics so I guess they also drew inspiration from that.

    >Nerd culture
First problem was right here. Nerd "culture", like that is worth anything. When you were a kid and saw Spider-Man swinging across the city or when Wolverine rips some robots to pieces with his claws that's not because you were a nerd, it's because it's fricking cool to anyone with eyes.
But at some point someone decided "Oh this is all nerd shit for c**ts with no backbone" or something and lumped a lot of shit together for insane morons who have less standards than literal children creating stupid manchildren addicted to fictional franchises because they're making a flowchart of which character is stronger than who or if jerkoff-man canonically got cucked or creaming over some underage chick.
Go read an old-ass comic, those are bright, colorful, cheesy as frick, sometimes idiotic, but they're FUN. Alan Moore may be an absolute moron but he was right about adult "nerds", they'll watch Star Wars nowdays and start questioning how their laser swords work.. Any not-uneducated kid will watch and just say "Oh, rad sword" because he knows it's a goddamn movie.
So then you got these adult c**ts trying to convince themselves their dumb fun movie isn't dumb, that it's actually an "epic" and that it's meaningful and philosophic, because they are afraid that they can't just enjoy something "silly" or "kiddy" or "bad" because those things are such a big part of their identity, it would make THEM look silly or stupid. Because they're nerds. They have no backbone and hate those meanie bullies.
Those pretentious c**ts grow up physically but their mind remains on that cringy adolescent "Uhm, I am an ADULT now OK?" mindset which, as writer and crazy guy CS Lewis said, is the one and only truly immature thing
Moore was right, but for the wrong reasons. "Nerds" are inherently pathetic c**ts, they grew up and they ruined media, not anyone else. They made Spider-Man a pathetic guy that can't grow up, or accomplish anything ever. No one else.

This, also, this whole "nerd shit" came into being because society is built around putting others down, so you can get higher in the social hierarchy. Anything that is a niche is bound to be ridiculed by others. Everyone who gets it knows why they want to climb the social ladder, I don't need to say it.

The sad thing is that both happen. It's just that the former is harder while the latter is easier.

Given how life as a WHOLE likes to take the the fastest and most efficient route to get results (ie. Lazy and easy) , and that evil is almost always the easiest route, what did you expect?

Humans are evil by default becaise LIFE IS EVIL.

Nature doesn't have conscious thought. Humans are capable of kindness and decency. It's not always the norm, but we're also able to comprehend game theory and that it's in our best interests not to go around backstabbing all the time.

While MODOK has been presented as a joke in the comics, he has also has his moments of respect from writers, and the occasional win over the past +50 years of his existence.
In contrast, his inclusion into the MCU was to be treated as a breathing joke, and killed off. Even with multiverse shenanigans, I really, REALLY doubt they're going to bother bringing back such a literal-who character
In the end, 100% of MODOK's appearances in the MCU will be a trash, written by someone who has nothing but burning contempt for the character. Rad, can't wait to see how they do Galactus.
