Nerds have always seethed about adaptations being unfaithful, but at some point they became loud and vocal enough that we couldn't avoid overhearing their sweaty, b***hy, whining. When did this happen? Was it Lord of the Rings? Because in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, all our favorite adaptations were mega unfaithful. Disney became an animation giant making globally popular unfaithful adaptations of books and stuff. We all loved Conan the Barbarian. We all loved Shrek. But at some point the tide shifted so that every adaptation ends up having to factor seething nerds into its marketing plans.

It basically only uses the first half of the book, and changes a lot of things. The author of the book sued them, trying to halt production, and called the film revolting and stuff.
hmm not a great adaptation I guess. Knowing that, it's at least something kids can enjoy, so I see your point.
The author hated that they turned a story warning against escapism, into escapism.

Maybe he was baited by the cash at first and had a change of heart afterwards. I don't know. I'm sure there are some interviews of Michael Ende talking about this.
The second half would have been really hard to adapt considering the budgets they had to work with back then. But it is funny how they turn the ending into a revenge fantasy. I could see how he'd be pissed off, it would be like LOTR ending with Frodo putting on the ring and killing everyone.

Nerds complaining about unfaithful adaptations is a story as old as civilisation. It's just that the internet runs on engagement, and the most powerful engagement is anger. So you see much, much, much more people being unhappy with unfaithful adaptations on the internet than you would anywhere else.
Also, due to the anonymity of the internet, multiple people complaining about different things will, in your mind, slowly turn into one singular group of people that does nothing but complaining. Every person complaining on the internet will be registered by your brain as "one of the complaining people". Your brain can't handle the information highway that you live on, and as a result it warps your worldview.

When LotR came out people were surprised by how faithful it was. That was in comparison to previous adaptations, obviously. After that movies tried a bit harder to be faithful. So I guess it would be LotR's fault for making people in general aware that it's possible to try and consequentially raising the bar. Today LotR does not meet expectations.
One of my earliest memories of LotR was people complaining how it wasn't like the book.

I remember loving that film as a kid. It did not hold up even with nostalgia. I think that movie would be really good if it were done as a animated film instead of a corny live action one. The horse dying was the only convincing part of the movie for me, after watching it again. Neat concept but Pagemaster did it better
