Netflix is out of touch.

I have nothing against gay people but when every single show has to have one, that fricking makes no sense. Most people don't have gay friends because they're fricking rare. The problem is that NETFLIX creators surround themselves with gay people all day and they think that gay people are common like black people

Were teens openly gay back in 80s American small towns?

Now they’re making Will gay too? Ffs

        Anonymous

I don't watch the show but some guy at work said Will is gay and that "some teenager came out of the closet". I was okay with the show being a metaphor for being gay or for being molested or whatever, but making kids or teens openly gay sounds anachronistic to me.

Neither of them are secretly gay. Only Steve knows Robin is gay, and she only told him because he tried asking her out. Will is most likely gay, unless the Duffers pull off an amazing ruse cruise, and his brother and mother seem to know, but are generally supportive because some people love their family members unconditionally.

I don't think or at least I hope they don't make Will gay. He's just a normal kid who's afraid of growing up and losing his friends. That would be much more interesting than making him gay.

It's wonky too because the actor is 3-4 years older than the character.
Will is only 14 in season 4. It's not at all unusual for a boy that age to be awkward around girls, especially a quiet nerd with PTSD. I know I shied away from girls who showed interest in me at that age just because I didn't know what to do.

Yes, there were gay people in the 80s, even in smaller towns. By the end of high school you pretty much knew who was gay… the guys I mean. They were mainly in choir and theater. I didn’t really hang with those folks so I didn’t know them too well. They didn’t bother me so I didn’t bother them.

It was really more in college when people came out, to be honest. I’m not sure that sexuality is completely decided until you are really on your own.

So 1.4% of the population is homosexual and you think that's justification for them to always be in a group of friends in mainstream shows? FRICK OFF

          Anonymous

Why do you care so much? Being annoyed because a show has a gay character is low IQ.

She's not openly gay. Only Steve knows because he's her best friend.

Thanks. I get the feeling that my coworker was just exaggerating it then because he's a bigot that likes to complain about gays.

I told you, I don't care that they're gay. My problem is over representation. Look at Umbrella Academy. 6 main characters, 1 is trans and 1 is gay. That's unrealistic.

              Anonymous

It's improbable but not unrealistic, but 99% of shows feature situations and events that are extremely improbable.

              Anonymous

It depends on the group. It makes sense that a group accepting of gay people is more likely to accept someone who is trans. Black people are only 13% of the population but obviously a show about a group of black friends is going to have them disproportionately be main members of the cast.

Shows casts don't need to be multisectional representations.

              Anonymous

It’s realistic for Umbrella Academy because all the kids were deeply traumatized freaks of nature.

I gotta be honest, I didn’t watch season 3 because season 2 sucked. The father is portrayed as evil for not wanting his wife to leave with their kid. And they kill him.

He is exaggerating. Neither of them are openly gay. Robin's subplot in the latest season is about her having a crush on a girl, but being too scared to ask her out because of the potential fallout; and Will's subplot is seemingly about his struggle coming out to his best friend.

You have your 500 kid school, with 1.4% gays, 12% nigs, 10% hispanics yeah, but it's not like chess club, the football team, the theater kids, the burnouts all have an exact split reflecting the school's demography.
The gaygiest, weirdest kids are going to find one another and hang out.

          Anonymous

I’m saying when I was in school (and I am very close to the age these kids were at the time of the show), I knew who the gay kids were. It wasn’t talked about openly. But then again, we minded our own business a lot more than kids now.

Duffers have said the show is about outcasts and these kids are outcasts. Because they felt different, I’m certain gay people would gravitate toward outcast groups of friends.

Do you think that justifies the over representation of Netflix. Umbrella Academy for instance has 6 main actors and 1 is gay and 1 is trans. I don't like when they force that shit.

This is legitimate critique. Ive been to several VERY small towns in the US with my black friend and no joke, especially the kids you can tell have never seen a black person before. Outside of urban USA, queer and non white people are rare indeed.

People move to places where people look like them and share culture norms. This isn’t racist or homophobic, it’s just a human truth. Self-segregation has always happened and it always will. But getting out to meet new people with different ideas is important to some folks, so they are more likely to go against that rule.

forced inclusivity is probably the main reason I've turned against LGBTQ.
get married do your gay shit and have fun, leave me out of it.
now it's forced into everything and it's disgusting. I don't care about a show like Euphoria existing, but when every show has to be gay it's way too much.

What about exclusively watching shows made before the mid 2010s? I don't watch any new shows but in my case it's because I hate the cinematography. For example I hate how everything is so dark and grey or orange nowadays, and I know it's because they just want to save money that way. Pic related, I'm sick of this.

        Anonymous

why should I have to? it isn't like the gay population is the majority, even LGBTQ allies are dwarfed by the people like me who don't care but just don't want it constantly in my face. then you have the fundies who can't tolerate the idea of it.

more moderate people are being pushed that way because it's gone completely overboard and watching reruns isn't a great solution.
blame network execs for the shit, it's not like the average gay person has much to say about it

I insult everyone. They’re aren’t genuine insults it’s just banter but you have to be careful with gays because they might take it too heart. The only people I openly insult with a deep hatred are trannies and super flamboyant child molester gays because I hate their personalities.

      >every now and then
      >literally every single show/movie is "every now and then"
They should be represented fairly, as in, ~2% of every show. So in a show with 10 cast members, that means no gay people, because ~2% would not equal a full person. But no, they're shoehorned into everything.

It's not about actual percentages it's about representation, which means every show is going to try to appeal to as many people as people. Usually this means a straight male or female lead, a gay sidekick, and one or two racial minorities. Sometimes they mix it up a bit.
Either way, bingo. Everyone and anyone watching that show/movie can find someone to represent them which rakes in the $$$. In truth it only turns away a very small minority of people so long as they're entertained.

So now they have a gay, a black and an autist. Place your bets for trans char next season, I was half banking on them leaving the ranga alive just so they could have a blind disabled one included just to cover all bases. I don't care about inclusiveness or "representation" in media if it fits the story but when it's so obviously pandering or put in for the sake of being there, it's off putting and feels like it's only there to appease people and tick boxes.
