Yens story and character in the TV show is an absolute mess. I have no idea what they are even attempting to do with her.
It literally sands down the best parts of the books to becoming morally black and white or changes the better short stories entirely. Like I don’t care about casting, if you’re willing to neuter the conflicts or change shit just so that it’s more digestible to modern audiences so their almonds don’t get activated it’s just a disservice to them. The witcher books aren’t even all that great but there are very few changes that actually make sense or add to the narrative in a way that’s excusable for streamlining.

Then we get season 2 and just about everything is wrong, vesemir is played wrong, ciri was cast too old in season 1 and really starts being an issue at this point, you cant have a coming of age story with a 20 year old. Yennefer looks more like a BFF for ciri than a mother figure, needed an older actress, Eva Green probably. Dandelion lacks charm. The whole witch story is shit spun out of nothing. The wild hunt storyline is gamer appeasement, that also shouldnt really be there. Vilgefortz was miscast during season 1 and that also became an issue at this point, during season 1 i assumed they would give his book role to Lars Mikkelsen, but seems not. The elf story about children renders the entire sub plot of Blood of Elves obsolete... point is they cant have children after human fertility age, despite living longer, and all the young elves died in a rebellion so they are now a dying race with no hope. We arent meant to know Ciri is the White Flames daughter at this point either, I guess they wanted a cliff hanger to end the season on but its trash and means nothing in the manner it was done. The entire thing about giant obelisks is dumb as frick, the universe has a bunch of monsters u can fight and yet they want to make new ones? its like jurassic park claiming normal dinosaurs arent cool enough so we need to modify them, why even make a story about dinosaurs then. Black b***h has way too much power, im guessing purely because she's black, really stands out as being pandering, plus the gauntler o dimm spoon scene is such hamfisted fanservice.
Episode 1 felt pretty good though, I thought season 1 lacked that story. Rest is neigh unwatchable unless consider it on par with a CW show.

The sewer Black person in ep 4 I think was the point where I lost any interest in it at all. No reason AT ALL for the character to be black. That was when I gave up on The Witcher, but I gave up on Netflix completely after picrel, after all their promises of "we heard you" blah blah blah, they include a cannon white character literally just long enough to racebend her. I'm with you there, I watch this show for geralt and ciri and I guess kind of yen, but the fringilla and elf stuff filled up way to much of the screentime and was slow at best, but straight up boring for most of it.
It's not even that it's boring, it's that it's obnoxious. It immediately takes you out of the world and back to reality where you get to sit there and unwind the racial allegories and the casting decisions.
I actually don't know what the story for season 2 was after sewer Black person. They went to a temple, yen betrayed them, then the last episode was the tenth plague from the book of Exodus. Season 1 needed the part of the book where he's at a monastery telling stories while healing to tie all the short stories together, other than that, it miscast just about everyone, but it felt like it had potential and with more budget maybe they could pull it off.
Then we get season 2 and just about everything is wrong, vesemir is played wrong, ciri was cast too old in season 1 and really starts being an issue at this point, you cant have a coming of age story with a 20 year old. Yennefer looks more like a BFF for ciri than a mother figure, needed an older actress, Eva Green probably. Dandelion lacks charm. The whole witch story is shit spun out of nothing. The wild hunt storyline is gamer appeasement, that also shouldnt really be there. Vilgefortz was miscast during season 1 and that also became an issue at this point, during season 1 i assumed they would give his book role to Lars Mikkelsen, but seems not. The elf story about children renders the entire sub plot of Blood of Elves obsolete... point is they cant have children after human fertility age, despite living longer, and all the young elves died in a rebellion so they are now a dying race with no hope. We arent meant to know Ciri is the White Flames daughter at this point either, I guess they wanted a cliff hanger to end the season on but its trash and means nothing in the manner it was done. The entire thing about giant obelisks is dumb as frick, the universe has a bunch of monsters u can fight and yet they want to make new ones? its like jurassic park claiming normal dinosaurs arent cool enough so we need to modify them, why even make a story about dinosaurs then. Black b***h has way too much power, im guessing purely because she's black, really stands out as being pandering, plus the gauntler o dimm spoon scene is such hamfisted fanservice.
Episode 1 felt pretty good though, I thought season 1 lacked that story. Rest is neigh unwatchable unless consider it on par with a CW show.
