Netflixs Avatar: The Last Airbender Will Feature A Fan-Favorite Character Pairing

The following info is from a person who read recently submitted (before the WGA strike) Book 2 and Book 3 scripts;
>The new live-action remake will fulfill fans’ wishes by introducing a romantic subplot between Katara and Zuko; a prominent pairing in the ATLA fandom.
>This is done to endue the story with more complex and compelling relationships in comparison to its cartoon source material.
>Book 3 will have Katara struggle with her feelings for Zuko which will introduce a new dimension to Aang’s conflict in the third act of the story.
>Katara will have sex with Zuko only to realize afterwards that she loves Aang.
Feel free to screencap. If the show won’t get cancelled because of the strike, this is exactly what’s going to happen.

It's one of those shows that tries to sneak things in. Like in one of the last episodes of the cartoon, before a major battle, one teen sneaks into another teen's tent and then the male teen is wearing a hawaiiain lei the next morning - because he got laid, get it?

There's a big difference between something like It's child gangbang and just mentioning that sometimes teenagers have sex.

The first scene with Suki sneaking into Sokka's tent. If seeing him laying on his bed in his tent waiting for Suki with a rose in his mouth isn't blatant enough for you, then I don't know what to tell you. Pic related is Sokka the next morning. The lei is never explained or even mentioned, and he has never worn or made anything like that in the series leading up to it.

Huh. I stand corrected. Sorry about that.

Suki was too strong and independent for Sokka. Sokka needed someone like Ty Lee. Cute and manipulable.

Nah having Sokka encounter Suki as a strong and independent warrior with himself being an overconfident chauvinist, being humbled and redeemed by her, surpassing her as a warrior by embracing healthy masculinity, and having Suki then willingly submit to him as an embrace of her femininity, as a choice in spite of her strength, independence, and warrior prowess, is unironically one of the best depictions of healthy masculinity and feminism, male-female relationships, and strong women/sensitive men in the modern canon.

Yeah. Demanding Avatar conform to the most strict bounds for children's cartoons as moronic and taking issue with the depiction of Sokka and Suki's sexuality is insane. They're arguably depicted as being eligible for consideration as married under common law. They're monogamous, committed, emancipated, and combatants in a war torn society.

Anon made a claim that humans of a certain age will do something

This is projection. How can anon be one hundred percent sure that a human will do something unless he is projecting himself onto that imaginary human in his illogical argument.

So now that you have moved goal posts, let us consider it.

Anon said that it was okay to depict fourteen year olds in a cartoon having sex because (you added generally) humans of that age will (you added generally) commit X behaviour.

Even if this was true, it does not follow that it should be depicted or referenced in a cartoon for children. Just because something is generally done in a specific context does not make it ethical. Childhood sexual abuse is also common. Much more common in fact than what people would like to believe. By anon’s logic, since (generally) humans are sexually abused as children (and sexual abuse can take many different forms such as an adult showing a kid porn) that it ought to be shown in a children’s cartoon. That is because, by anon’s and the rest of this thread’s logic, if it is common then it is right.

Okay, but the thing you're complaining about is two emancipated 16 year olds that have formal military positions in a war torn, ante-industrial society being shown to put together an elaborate ceremony to consummate a committed, long-term, monogamous relationship. I genuinely think it doesn't even mildly subvert Western mores, other than a very fleeting Puritan interpretation of them. They're entitled and eligible to get married, and they're in a condition where an official ceremony wouldn't even be possible.

It's a netflix adaptation so you're right that it's going to be garbage. But handled competently, I don't hate those changes. It always felt like Aang and Katara only got together because he was the MC and she was the FemC. His crush was entirely unrequited up until the very end, plus the difference between a 12 and 14 year old feels a bit off compared to a 14 and 16 year old. And Aang getting all angsty over accidentally burning Katara's hands (Which she immediately healed. Seriously, they were better before Aang even saw her again.) was always kind of moronic. Add in some energy bending foreshadowing or training, make sure Sokka either gets to hit stuff with his sword or gets a different weapon upgrade (One of those japanese metal bats could work) and that's all the major flaws taken care of.

You're saying you want an entire production in order to get something that's 10% better (in the best case scenario) than and otherwise identical to something you already have?

              Anonymous

No, I said that this is a netflix adaptation and going to be terrible. But since nothing I can say will change the fact that they're making it, I can at least think about what story changes would improve it, and to that end I believe that Zuko/Katara would iron out a couple wrinkles.

I dislike Zuku/Katara. I'd rather May be more present and redemptive. I'd agree there's too much overt romance between Katara/Aang given their ages and roles, but I think my preference would be to keep the subtext and a little of the tension, but move the overt pursuit into the epilogue. I also dislike Katara's presence in the finale and feel it needlessly undermined Zuku's arc to the detriment of his redemption. Honestly I think it was actually an instance of girlbossing and anti-male sentiment. Zuku, finishing his redemption and mantling the masculine ideal, should defeat Azula alone and on merit; Azula should be at or near her prime and not severely weakened.

A lot of the comics take place in... I forget what they called it at first, (Fish-Dog City or something?) but it's implied to turn into the Republic City from Korra, so the comics had tons of rapid technological advancement like that. Writers just cannot into the passage of time in stories. I agree that it's moronic, but it's at least a plot point that the forklift is there, it's not just some random thing in a random warehouse.

              > Writers just cannot into the passage of time in stories.
That's pretty challenging, to be fair. Either you pivot your story around some intellectual turning point in history to justify featuring huge technological advances, or you greatly accelerate civil (and thus scientific) development. Either way, you want to avoid the stagnation of your story's environment. It's the original power creep.

Honestly this is a huge issue with live action remakes. You're never gonna get an ethnically accurate actor without being accused of whitewashing because anime, and derivative works, whitewash the characters. Japanese don't give a frick about any of this shit and just do what fits the desired aesthetic. They're not real people, they're not real ethnicities. They're just idealizations of an arbitrarily chosen aesthetic. You can't translate that into reality, arguably at all since it's one of the freedoms afforded by animation, but certainly not in a politically correct way. The most representative choice for Katara would unironically be an ethnic/American hybrid that's in the 99.99+ percentile of conventional beauty.

stop trying to adapt animation to live action. Especially when its animated anyway because studios use cgi like a foundation to build on instead of a crutch to lean.

OP forgot this part of the article which I find to be very noteworthy
    >...Shortly after meeting with Aang, Toph surprises the group by revealing her own tattoos which are less reminiscient of the tribal markings Aang wears but more casual, a way for Toph to express her feelings through her skin despite her inability to see in the same way as others
    >this comes into play later in the episode when Katara and Toph, who have since settled their initial differences and friction through gosipping and enjoying a night out on the town "meeting some cute boys," conclude the episode with Katara overcomes her initial fear and gets a tattoo on her right ankle and thigh, per Toph's recommendation

All in all I feel like this adaptation is going in a direction that I wasn't ready for but I'm here for it all the same. I'm hyped, to say the least.

I mean, I do understand that the main character and female main character have to get together in the end in a show like this so I'm fine with that. The annoying things were Aang getting all angsty over it for no reason and katara basically just changing her mind one day with no real impetus or reason to suddenly like Aang. Especially since doing otherwise would mean that Korra would have to be entirely rewritten, and wait I think I just changed my mind.

the only thing I liked about Korra was that it gave more insight into the relationship of bending and the spirit world like the original didnt.

was actually pretty interesting seeing people living in some wierd imagination land-garden of eden before learning bending and getting sentenced to earth.

        Anonymous

I loathed everything that Korra did with the spirit world. Dumbed down the Avatar from a force of balance and turned it into a force of pure good and basically ruined the entire message of Last Airbender.

          Anonymous

to be fair how would you explain this to kids? wouldnt balance mean Aang just starts slaughtering all fire nation residents to make up for the amount of killing they had did in their war games? Aang only ever uses his avatar powers to help people and settle disputes between spirits/man.

Isnt the ending of Korra that Spirits and Man are going to have to learn to get along with each other again? because one city is a bridge into the spirit world? or was it that Korra and Asami closed off the spirit world from the physical world forever?
Its one of those two things.

            Anonymous

Avatar was based in Eastern concepts of ying-yang/balance. What they did in Korra just moved it closer to the Abrahamic model of good v evil.

            Anonymous

            >to be fair how would you explain this to kids?
That's the point! Half of the appeal of Avatar was that it was this new, nuanced, eastern spiritualism that Americans never get exposed to. Aang's struggle of whether or not to kill the fire lord showed that perfectly. If you can't explain it, pick something else to write and don't just fricking retcon it.

            >wouldnt balance mean Aang just starts slaughtering all fire nation residents
No, that's revenge. The people he would be killing had nothing to do with the invasion and are just doing what they can to survive. Balance would be ending the war in a way that made it so neither side wanted revenge, which is exactly what happened. And then the comics were trying to create the balance in this new world where earth and fire aren't fighting since balance is ever-shifting depending on the state of the world. That's the struggle with balance and what makes it more interesting than just good versus evil.

              >Balance would be ending the war in a way that made it so neither side wanted revenge, which is exactly what happened

lmfao. Water Nation and Earth Nation would be HELLA fricking pissed after what the Fire nation pulled. I get that its a kid show so they cant show death but you know for a FACT that the Fire Nation killed a frickton of people, burned down a FRICKTON of villages and I mean its not like those poeple just turned around and said " i forgive u".

No, they're civilians working to support their military in their conquests. They tacitly approve of everything their soldiers do. Aang should make like Saint Harris and find the answer to the Fire Nation question.

Seriously though, the Fire Nation make out like bandits in ATLA. They remove the fire lord, replace him with his fricking son and suddenly the slate is wiped clean. They even basically get to keep their colonies even if they are "independent".

                Anonymous

Yes, that's why it's balance and not revenge or even justice. That's what makes it so interesting and why he struggles with his choices so much. Aang's goal is not to make things even or right. His goal is to bring peace with the smallest cost.

If I have two tanks of water on a seesaw and I take a cup of water out of one side, it will be out of balance. The only way to put it back in balance would be to take a cup from the other side as well. The Fire Nation profited immensely from their attacks on the other nations. The air nomads are fricking gone, 50% of the Water nations basically doesn't exist anymore and the Earth kingdom is a ruin. But the Fire nation is basically untouched. Balance is fricked, you can't fix 100 years of total world war. The "Hundred years war" were a series of WAY smaller conflicts between England and France that basically defined relations between the two parties for the next 400 years.

                >The only way to put it back in balance would be to take a cup from the other side as well.
No, you could also add the water back to the other side or find a stick to prop it up or tighten the bolt so it needed more weight to move or something. I didn't read the rest of your post.

                Anonymous

The water is gone and propping the seesaw up doesn't balance it, you're basically making it not a seesaw, just a plank.

                Anonymous

Then move the heavier water close to the center so its center of gravity evens out then. The very obvious meaning to the metaphor is that the entire fricking point of the show teaching balance instead of just good versus evil is to make you think about things like this instead of just going, "I can just punch that guy and solve all the problems in the world."

                Anonymous

The new balance was that the fire nation had as much power as the other 3 combined. The solstice messed things up because then the fire nation became too powerful and had to be neutered.

                Anonymous

To be fair, the Fire Nation draws heavy inspiration from Japan, and Japan got away without war crime prosecutions and got to keep their emperor. The Emperor of WWII Imperial Japan made a fricking state visit to US soil in the 80s. So it kind of fits.

Introducing kids to new concepts, even if they don't fully understand them, are actually good for them. Hell them not understanding would hopefully trigger their curiosity.
I heard that during the development of FF7 the use of Zodiac naming devices was used because they were cool and the writers wanted the names to trigger people into doing research about the names.
No idea if it's true but writers trying to educate their audience is a good thing, when we are talking about and to sane humans.

How can you know the original series is superior when you haven't seen the live action?

Because ATLA is an abysmal candidate for a live action remake. They should have done a girthier, more mature, less censored animated remake.

        Live actions are rarely good.

I'm watching the original animated series now because it's one of my girlfriend's favourite shows. It's beautifully animated but incredibly held back by being child friendly in the sense that it feels like there aren't any stakes because nobody is really at threat to die.

It would be great if it was a bit more violent with people getting crushed by rocks or burned alive and shit like that too.

Yep. The funny thing too is that the show tried to be as violent as possible and tried every method of depicting the death that was occurring and omnipresent in a way that would satisfy censors, and people familiar with the media environment acclaim what it was able to get by censors, but it's still so painfully lacking. An animated remake without censors could have been unreal. People fricking love ATLA in America, and still don't have much exposure to mature animation, other than crass adult swim type stuff like Rick and Morty. An animated ATLA remake with the maturity you get in anime routinely could have been groundbreaking.

The first season is a bit of a harder sell to an older viwer becuase its the most childlike in its approach. I know this is the red flag phrase thats used about shows you shouldn't waste your time with, but it unironically gets better with the second season.

Not everything needs to be violent. You have a dearth of violent shows and you want to ruin my precious childhood with your desire for blood? Is having a girlfriend not enough, you have to take my cartoon away from me too?

I don't have a problem with shows being non-violent, but it conflicts with ATLA whole premise.

        >talk about a big war going on, lots of people dying and omg the Fire Nation is sooo scary
        >fights in the show just have people getting knocked over or being comically stuck against something, this happens even during the invasion of the Fire Nation during the eclipse

It's not even representative of his precious cartoon. Jet's death scene was wildly shocking to successfully get on Nickelodeon. I feel like I remember the creators even saying that one of the reasons they had the spirit bending bullshit is that they were considering ending his arc with him killing the Fire Lord, but if they did that they wanted the death scene to be so clear and impactful it would need to be orders of magnitude more violent than what they could ever possibly get aired.

A kid does get crushed and killed in S2 IIRC. There's pretty constant mention via innuendo that people die, but not always explicit.

    >Katara will have sex with Zuko only to realize afterwards that she loves Aang.

This is so bullshit I can almost see Netflix doing it because they need to introduce cuckshit into our wholesome hero's journey fantasy IP.

If the actors are age accurate to their characters in the animated series, it makes perfect sense to go with Zutara in the live action. Hell, Katara being attracted to Aang that way was weird even in the cartoon.

    >zutaragays still mad because their ship doesn't happen
    >kataanggays now mad because Katara lost her virginity to Zuko

man this is a shitposting feast, like they're fanning the flames for the biggest outrage possible.

Should've just thrown gasoline on the fire and added a Zuko-Azula sex scene too.

How badly will they rape iroh?
    >be famous and celebrated warlord with many victories
    >untill it's his own son that dies
    >turns a new leaf and tries to spend the rest of his life as a good person who helps and teaches others.
Simple enough but they will frick it up.

Drink tea, and watch this show drift by, anon. I have no hope this will do the story any justice whatsoever, but maybe that’s ok too; there’s more to life than bad television. Iroh (and Mako behind him) would likely feel the same.

      Some tunes for you.

      Peace
