The only widely successful adult oriented animation has been family sitcoms. The sole exception, not including anime, is Rick and Morty and that occasionally hits on the tropes of the sitcom. Executives are going to fund what they think will sell. And regardless of quality, your average jack off isn't willing to give the time of day to things like Scavenger's Reign or Pantheon.
Super heroes may be a way for adult animation to diversify, I have heard people outside of Cinemaphile talk about Invincible and Harley Quinn for what it's worth, but you're out of luck for anything beyond those two subjects.
Aqua Teen is a big reason why AS could even make it to R&M. Just because other genre have failed doesn't mean only this instance is where it works, heck anime's got a lot of adult popular content that isn't centered around kin
