I think I have an idea. Consider that we know that the goblins are reproducing weirdly fast, they got driven out of wherever they were last, and the older goblins were especially worried about outsiders being allowed near their secret.
Now, its obvious that the goblins are reproducing with other races. Thats just a given. But that doesn't answer two key questions: why is that enough to get them pogromed, and if they are breeding so much *where are all of the pregnant goblins*? They should be all over the place, right? Like, every other goblin we meet should have some degree of baby bump.
I think the secret is that whatever they have hidden away that they bring out for gatherings accelerates pregnancies. Thats how the goblins breed so fast nobody can keep track, because their pregnancies are over and done in a day. And if whatever this is works on *not just goblins*? Its easy to see why that would get them viciously attacked.
This would mean that Lydia for sure would be in danger of exposure to this, taking a plot point that otherwise wouldn't matter for months and making it an immediate concern, and depending on how strong this goblin whatever is both Vera and Alfie might be at risk as well. They might not be able to get pregnant from their recent partners under normal circumstances, but that may not apply here. For Alfie, her irresponsible behavior and general poor choices resulting in her getting saddled with a baby and having to see things from her mother's POV marks a climax to her arc. The same is not true of Vera, unless you see it as more of a blessing for her: allowing her to have a kid she otherwise couldn't with her new mountain man husbando and giving her a reason not to return to the havlin village she hated anyway.
