This is true even of people who aren't public figures. If your friend is an addict and you think they might try and manipulate people then you reach out to those people and let them know. What you wouldn't do is write a facebook post explaining all the fricked up things your friend has done so that everyone you've known since high school can read it.

I’m a good Christian, I go to church twice a week, I read The Holy Bible every day, I’m not abusive, I have a job and I pay my bills AND her bills. I’m a provider, but I’m also an alcoholic. It sucks, but it happens. I tackled the party magician at my son’s birthday as a prank. Again, I’m a Christian and was pretending the magic he was doing was Satanic so I tackled him and we just happened to both fall into my son’s birthday cake. He thought it was hilarious. All the kids was laughing, but of course my ex wife and her pussy dentist boyfriend had a problem with it. She acted like I punched the guy out.
