Yeah, but Frozen was in part a hit because of their very friendly dynamic, so it may have reinvigorated the idea at Disney that hey having the main princess have a close and warm relationship with a same-age female friend might not be a terrible idea after all.

There's nothing wrong with self-inserts. EVERYONE makes self inserts in whatever they make. The only difference is that talented/smart creatives know to either break up the self insert into different (say you're white, a dude, have long hair, a short nose, and have glasses and like anime) characters, or be completely upfront with whatever character is obviously the self insert, and take pride in it while also understanding that the self insert is NOT literally them.

Neoliberal sheltered wealthy California kids (particularly women), however, can't do the former, and when it comes to the latter they view the self insert as a direct vessel for themselves and not an actual character or something distinct: they ARE the character and vice versa.

            Anonymous

Turning Red and Wish (more than likely) both have the same problem in that the self insert characters are TOO much like the creator that it bogs down the experience: it exposes how the whole creation is so obviously a form of therapy for the artist (which is not inherently a bad thing) but shows how egocentric it ends up being. Rather than be a story that anyone can identify with or understand (and still inspired by the author and their life), it just becomes pure wish-fulfillment and a peek into the diary of the creator as well as them venting their frustrations they feel about their parents, the opposite sex, puberty, as well as how they fail to actually achieve self-actualization through conflating meaningless social justice with finding meaning in life.

And really, this has less to do with the politics of the creators at Disney and more to do with the wealth, social circles, and upbringing they have: the young adults making movies are being raised or moved into sheltered California city life devoid of real struggles. These are the kids who never had to work summer jobs, hardly had to work chores growing up, went to college full-time straight out of high school, then went on to do art for a living while never REALLY having to worry about crippling debt or not having financial security. They have no real problems, only first world ones, problems with solutions that simply aren't feasible, so in an attempt to lessen their own guilt (that exists from being the only people with the freedom to change things) while refusing to actually surrender their privilege, they talk like this.

              This is her husband.

These people are the new American Psychos, only instead of materialism, they buy and brag about expensive and lofty ideas while they sit around and do nothing meaningful all day.

Hm. Apparently this Veerasunthorn is actually from Thailand, where she dropped out of a Thai medical school to pursue animation in the USA.

So maybe her Thai upbringing helps her avoid the worst Cali tropes, even though she went to an art uni there?

              Anonymous

It doesn't matter she dropped out of Thai medical school: by nature of being a woman, she adopts the beliefs and behaviors of the social group she falls into. This isn't even a sexist remark, it's just something women do. You could spend your whole young adulthood as a woman raised in Thailand but the minute you move to America, that all goes out the window in order to assimilate to survive and pass as normal in the new social order. Whatever the California kids believe in and say, so will she.

Yeah, there's a chance the best friend isn't some Mary Sue but just a relatively small side role that's played in a funny self-ironic way. I liked Lottie in PATF, who knows. I thought I'd hate Encanto based on the preview materials but ended up liking it.

Nevertheless I've rarely seen such blatant self-inserting, it's funny

HERE GOES CLARIFICATION ABOUT SELF INSERTION

According to research done by Lego, women in general have a hard time self inserting if the character is not "literally them".

LEGO once commissioned a study on gender differences in play when they were developing the girl-focused Lego Freinds line and one of its main conclusions boiled down to this: Boys want to be Batman. Girls want Batman to be them.

That’s why when you develop a girl’s property you need to have either one kinda bland, boilerplate protagonist that can be imprinted upon or a wildly diverse ensemble of protags that covers the entire gamut of personalities so they can pick one and be like “that’s so me!”

    Stydy: https://www.isegoria.net/2012/01/lego-is-for-girls/

      Anonymous

I remember reading somewhere that they really can't help but to self insert. Some research found that men prefer their fictional characters to be cool, but women want their fictional characters to be relatable. And since women are being put in charge of projects more and more, everything else falls in line.

Oh, yeah, this was it. I got it from somewhere else though. I didn't learn this from someone schizoposting.

Yeah, the costumes are bumming me out. A Disney princess movie should have their character wear the kind of dress that little girls will want to put on their dolls. Not the kind of dress that their mom can pull out from the very back of her closet and maybe use as a cheap spare practical outfit to be an extra at the ren faire.

The ending for Wish is probably going to be the Wishing Star goes kamikaze to defeat King Magnifico and returns to the sky. Asha learns that King Magnifico kicked her family out of power so she's technically a princess. Asha becomes the princess and everybody celebrates as pretty much nothing changes.

More then half of the Andalusian muslims were white european converts, usually celtiberians or visigoth. So this movie chose the one place in the medieval Islamic world that had the most white people after the crusader states and the Caucasus
