>supposed to be a huge deal in-universe
>all their comics are trash, bar maybe the Kirby ones for the art
>seriously, you can find 90s X-Schlock that's better written than the non-Kirby NG books
>nobody cares about any of the characters bar Darkseid, and fetishists who like Barda/Miracle
>Orion is a literal nobody and Metron's only contribution is being ripped off to create Thanos
>none of the others are in any way, shape or form actually fleshed out, liked by anyone, or even just cool enough
>their whole existence creates a problem concerning all the other various Pantheons running around, since they're literally aliens LARPing as Gods but you can just take a ship and go visit their planets where random schmucks literally live in random houses
Is there a bigger frickup than the New Gods? Eternals suck as well, but at least they're a typical Ancient Astronauts/Aliens type of story. You can work with that and the base characters aren't that awful. Meanwhile the NG stumble and fall in every single instance. At this point you could off them all bar Darkseid and use the angst to make Orion more prominent as DC's angry Silver Surfer type of guy, and nothing would be lost.
I was going to say the Eternals but you brought em up already
The movie sucked.
Robb Stark carried it.
Good art also I'm a fricking moron. I've had it up in a tab but forgot to read it.

Lets read it together oni chan
>Lets read it together oni chan
Okay.
I like Metron. Black Racer is the worst Kirby character ever and maybe the worst DC character with any notability. They just basically gave him free reign to do whatever he wanted and the results had some big hits and big misses
I like the basic concept of the Black Racer basically being an avatar of Death and him animating the corpse of the comatose Vietnam vet whenever he needs to do something, but his costume and his name make it hard to take him seriously.
I honestly got chills in that issue when the veteran's eyes snap open in the last panel and he's looking right at the reader.
It was cool in final crisis when darkseid nearly conquered the planet and brainwashed everyone but that was it. they forced this mother box shit way too hard. I like kirby though.
darkseid is at his best when he's corrupting people or when he's doing petty shit like blowing up earth because he can't conquer it like in that one superman episode. In the movies he gets used as a beatstick too much.
The irony is that if the New Gods were their own unrelated story like Kirby intended, they'd be forgotten, but because they're part of the DC universe, everyone knows of them but they're a crippled franchise.
They were intended to succeed the Asgardians after Ragnarok killed them all.
bump
What's to bump? No one cares about the new gods.
I care and its actually discussion about comics instead of whatever veil anti gay, anti woman, rage bait the other threads are foisting out
Everyone seems to like Big Barda.
Barda wouldn't even make a top 15 most popular DC women.
Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn and a bunch of other characters are way more popular and well-known, but anytime she shows up in something, it's always nice to see her.
Everyone who knows who Big Barda is likes her
She has to be in it because I can't name that many DC women.
>supposed to be a huge deal in-universe
You’re starting from an incorrect premise
True enough, people forget about the quintessence and how essentially it shows there are many cosmic powers in the DC universe who are on equal footing.
Harley Quinn and Big Barda team up when
It already happened.
Based. Link?
It's the Kelly Thompson Birds of Prey run.
Is it good?
That looks like shit.
Mister Miracle and Barda is actually fun though when used in the right way that isn't edgy King "so deep" shit
>Eternalsgays trying to big up their flop by shitting on the New GODS
lmfao
>all their comics are trash
There is your answer OP . Base characters cant be awful only their writers are. If I was good at writing or a writer at all I could make a comic about a duo of 2 best friends of wich one got the power to make people sweat and the other to turn water of any kind near him slightly acidic and it would be somehow exciting as shit.
The Walt Simonson Orion series was OK.
The John Byrne one was... well, John Byrne, so it was nice looking at least.
Oh, the Mike Allred Forager book was good.
Does anyone know if there's an ashcan or something of what Hunger Dogs was supposed to be before DC made Jack cut up the original art and rearrange it so they could have their FRICKING TOY LINE with Darkseid not killed off?
They may have scans of it somewhere on https://kirbymuseum.org/
It exists but it's not Hunger Dogs.
Kirby was supposed to turn in a finale for the New Gods to be published in the Baxter New Gods reprint series, to be included with issue #6 that would wrap up the series. But Kirby was banned from killing Darkseid and Orion.
So Jack decided to be c**ty and sent in "On the Road to Armaghetto", which was all about how the kid who traveled with Metron in the original series was disfigured and working for Darkseid to build bombs and Orion having to kill him to stop Darkseid from mass producing said bombs.
DC whole rejected it and forced Kirby to write a new story for the reprint line while also giving him a graphic novel to finish shit up. But Kirby was dragging his feet because, AGAIN, Kirby was banned from burning down the franchise so no one could do anything with it afterwards plus was being ordered to resurrect all of the characters he killed off in the original New Gods series.
When Kirby kept missing his deadlines, editorial called his bluff and Kirby was ordered (and by ordered, told to do it or DC would cancel the graphic novel and blackball him) to incorporate OTRTA into the graphic novel so that it could be released on time.
Kirby cut up OTRTA and rearranged the pages and incorporated them into what few Hunger Dogs pages he already did and finished the frankensteined story.
The original OTRTA story was published in ashcan form in a Jack Kirby fanzine and in the fourth Fourth World omnibus volume. But isn't in the Absolute HC, stand alone New Gods trade, or the stand alone omnibus either
It's too bad that Kirby wasn't able to stay with DC longer. It would be interesting to see what would have happened with Captain Victory.
>stares at the guy next to Orion
Monkey head.
That's one criticism I have of Kirby, he has a habit of making his main characters look like civilized gorillas when they look straight forward.
Honestly the hairstyle isn't helping either.
Don't forget that the general public thinks of Darkseid as a Superman villain before anything else now.
It started when they had him be a reoccurring Superfriends villain.
Darkseid was in Superfriends?
Yes. He was smitten with Wonder Woman and almost married her in one episode (the plot involved a mind control weapon). Kalibak showed up a couple of times too. I don't remember seeing Orion though but it's been a long time since I watched the show.
blame john byrne.
