Korra and Adventure Time destroyed western cartoons forever. Nothing has been the same ever since. But these things wouldn't be possible with their predecessors ATLA and Flapjack. So I blame them too.
Can't wait for the show to drop so that everyone can remember how bad ATLA actually is. Nostalgia blinds a lot of you but the show doesn't hold up on rewatch. It's a show that's painfully made for kids with 70% of its episodes being filler. The best episode was Bitter Work and that was mainly because it tried to develop the magic system.
I rewatched it a year ago. It was still great.

It's not great at all. The music and aesthetics carry the entire show which makes me feel, but when I actually watch the events I kept finding holes and other dumb shit. They fired Filoni and the other dumb writers of season 1, but 2 and 3 still had the same problems: characters going on long journeys that actually don't advance the plot or really develop said character. They literally waited until the season 3 finale to finally start developing Azula beyond villain of the week. Something as basic as telling us what she actually thinks of her friends and her mother was an afterthought.

Korra was kind of great lore wise because it shows that Aang was actually a terrible avatar since he let the fire nation keep its colonies even though it went against the concept of balance, all because he was super butthurt about muh air bender genocide.

I'm aware republic city was loosely based off Hong Kong but they have New York accents and clearly leaned into that vibe heavily, they built all four arcs around opponents to their newfound industrial capitalist way of life turning out to be frauds, including the anti colonist strawman in season 2 which is the worst offender because they used it to christianize the lore by adding a dark avatar. It's no longer an eastern myth about balance it's a western one about God vs Satan. They took a fantasy eastern setting, industrialized it, and used it as a soiboys thesis for why neoliberalism always wins (it's because everyone else is a selfish fraud who just wants power)
