I though the show poked fun at scientology before. Remember when Rick claimed that he would even join a scientology seminar with Birdperson in tone that conveyed that it would be one of the things he wouldn't like to do but would only for the sake of his friend.

I don't have a problem with the side characters, but after the first episode and now this, things are starting to feel a lot like the new Futurama. It's a little infatuated with itself, if not afraid to add anything new. It's as if the writers were given a toy during show and tell, and they're afraid to mess with it because they need to give it to someone else soon. They just want their turn to end.

Next episode. Rick’s gonna be fighting at least bigfoot, but based on the President’s rundown in the cold open it might be a bunch of cryptids. If I were to hazard a big dick guess, I’d say that this episode will put Dr. Wong’s therapy all the way to the test. Either Dr. Wong will have to budge that sometimes there’s no healthy way out of a situation, or she’ll have a fling with the president in an unhealthy way, or the lesson will be that she was right once again and Rick just needed to trust the advisors around him or possibly learn to understand where bigfoot is coming from as a being.

Nobody who pretends to care about this shit has said shit. Unless you count Jessica Gao, who specifically wrote the character so an asian would be cast, only for Harmon to cast Sarandon instead.

Did she publicly bemoan this decision and disown the episode and Harmon, shaming him as a another rich white middle aged man who got his way above a minority? Of course fricking not. Instead they did a podcast together called "Whiting Wongs" where apparently they discussed each other's point of view. But it only lasted four episodes. And the link to it is not broken. And the character has never been recast. And Gao went on to create, write, produce, etc. that god awful and near universally panned She-Hulk series.

I’m down with this, actually. I don’t like Wong or the President very much but this angle could lead to some fun from Rick. I’m also one of the few that appreciates how Rick is developing with therapy. It’s not my ideal way to evolve his character but for what it is at least he’s trending in the right direction. Episode 1 was trash and Episode 2 was above average. I’m placing my expectations for this one at dead average, but the later episodes this season look a lot more compelling.

The reason they picked scientology is because it’s goofy and you could make a Tom Cruise joke. The point is to show how far Rick has developed (from episode one of PEE PEE POO POO GOD DOESN’T REAL MORTY). It’s actually a significant moment for his character.

I hope it's not unironically what you suggest, because Scientology is fairly obviously much worse than a typical religion. It'd basically be like Rick suddenly facing towards the camera and pledging allegiance to ISIS unironically.

If the joke was about Christianity it would be too loaded and serious. Scientology actually works better precisely because it’s objectively ridiculous. Despite that, Rick acknowledges that he shouldn’t tell people what to believe just because it’s silly.

There is no way that either the president or Wong has the ability to prevent Rick from spying on them if he wants to know.

            Anonymous

but he would be too busy with the sasquatch mission, he'd be off the grid trying to hunt it down or incapacitated by it.
months would go by, and when he gets back he'd find no trace of it anywhere on his usual monitoring equipment, except for a gap of time where they were both someplace he didn't put cameras. it could be a coincidence that they both suddenly vanished, and even the times themselves only overlap and aren't simultaneous. maybe they're even at opposite sides of the country when the gap happens. doesn't matter, he gets obsessed with figuring it out.

I don’t think they’re going there, but it could be interesting. It would make a lot of sense. Unfortunately she’s currently too boring for her and Rick to start something, so if anyone wins it’ll be the president.

Wong is pretty much the only character that hasn’t compromised her principles. I wonder if she’ll stay that way by the time the episode ends. If so then this is going to be mostly a President/Rick conflict.

Rick's voice does almost sound like Roiland. But it is off. Same with Morty. I know people have complained and want Roiland back. Was dumb to fricking kick him off. Solar Opposites also changed his VA but while the VA is completely different he gets the mannerisms right and how Korvo acts right. It's just... you know, British.

I think Solar Opposites had the right idea using a completely different voice.

Calling it now: this episode hits on a concept called erotic transference. Some therapy patients romanticize/eroticize the supportive, intimate though one-sided relationship with their therapist, for example if they've been seriously deprived of deep, healthy relationships in their everyday life. Makes sense that widower!Rick would subconsciously view Dr. Wong as a quasi-spouse. It's serious misconduct for therapists to flirt or sleep with their patients though and they can lose their license for it. Anyway it sounds like something Dan Harmon would know about from personal experience. Or someone in the writers room is a fan of The Sopranos.

Yeah, Rick crushing on Wong has Dan written all over it.

Is it also serious misconduct for therapists to flirt of sleep with their patients' close associates (like, here, the president)?

          >Is it also serious misconduct for therapists to flirt of sleep with their patients' close associates (like, here, the president)?
Yes, it's explicitly prohibited by the American Counseling Association to sleep with a client's spouse/romantic partner or family member. Sleeping with a friend of the client (in Rick's case, a frenemy) is less clear cut. Bottom line is that therapists are supposed to avoid actions that would harm their patients; it's called non-maleficence. In my opinion, knowingly sleeping with a client's very close friend would qualify as maleficence. So would it be maleficence for Wong to hook up with Keith David President? I don't think so because if Rick is hurt by it, it's because he has erotic transference and feels overly involved in his therapist's love life through no fault of her own.

They're from space. Space alternate dimensions aren't the same. It sounds stupid, so much so that they never actually say it on the show, but it seems to be the implicit rule.

turn your brain off, the dimension-hopping stops making sense the more you try to nitpick. You should only focus on how it affects the main family and their infinite counterparts.

Pretty fricked up if there's a version of Bird Person abandoned because Rick fricked up Earth, and then another version who Rick allowed to get frundled when Frundle Earth inevitably consumes his universe.

Birdperson we know for sure should be the original seeing as how in his season 5 episode, Rick explicitly stated grabbing another BP from a different universe wasn't an option because he loved "his" BP just that much. However, that opens up a whole new ugly can of worms because it implies that BP is his sole favorite friend and that he couldn't give less of a shit about Squanchy and the rest of them.

Hell, if the show really wanted to get dark, they could do an episode about his former friends wanting revenge. Remember that the president, who by the time of season 5 is close to Rick's equal in technology, could have very well survived the earth getting Frundled seeing as how he has his own space station.

He still gets some funny moments here and there. They just use him way too often that he starts becoming draining. I get that Harmon loves Keith David, but the president character just is not needed every season.

Technically he was in season five three times but one of them was just a cameo.

What if every episode of this season is just Rick teaming up with someone else completely forgetting about Morty?
So far we had "Rick and PB", "Rick and Jerry" and now "Rick and President".
The only "exception" would be the mindblowers episode, which is instead "Summer and Morty" and it's an anthology episode anyway, so Morty's still barely in it. They'll just be watching bits of various "Rick and Summer" adventures!

Old Rick and Morty would come up with random new characters in every episode. Now you have Mr Poopubutthole, the President of America, Birdman, Gearshead, Betty, so much fricking on, in nearly every episode.

This is how the Simpsons lost their edge as well. They were trying to make us laugh at the circus of characters they have, which comes off as annoying because those characters weren't made to be constantly on screen.
