In the Ep "Glass Brother" when Salad Fingers is "Puddle Meddling" he's not actually going thru the reflection he's just sinking deep into the sand as it shows with him "sacrificing" his puppet to the "Harvest Spirit."
This also explains why Salad Fingers acts the way that he does. Why he talks to himself endlessly. Why he actively avoids other people that arent just a biproduct of his own broken subconscious. There was that Ep where Salad Fingers gets his own Toy Horse and he eats a version of himself. This also explains all the more Feral looking Salad Fingers randomly roaming the desert. They either ate themselves, their clones or were partially eaten. Its an endless recycle of the same Salad Fingers eating itself over and over again
